Aeron wasn’t entirely sure how she wound up mixed into all this mess, as per usual. For once, Thana hadn’t been involved. All that really meant was that she couldn’t blame the infuriating woman. She had been approached by a representative of a dark guild about taking on a special job. Honestly, it sounded like more trouble than it was worth but Aeron was in desperate need of some jewel so she could eat. Stealing all the time got tiresome, and brought a lot more attention on her than she really wanted. It was simpler to just pay for a meal like everyone else. So despite her better judgment she’d accepted the work.

The mission was to kidnap a noble out of their home in the middle of the night. Apparently there was some Baron in town that this dark guild had been extorting money out of for months, and the man had finally dropped a pair of balls and cut the guild off from his finances. The dark wizards weren’t exactly pleased about losing their funding and decided they wanted to teach the guy a lesson by having his youngest daughter kidnapped. Normally they would have no problems doing the deed themselves, of course, but they wanted to make sure no ties were left to them.

Thus, Aeron had been contracted alongside some other mage. She didn’t know anything about the guy, not even a name. They just told her that they would have him meet her at this bar a few blocks away from the baron’s neighborhood. The woman had spent a precious few bits of her last jewel to buy herself a beer and sat down in a corner with her back to the wall where she could watch everyone with hard, cerulean colored eyes. Her hair was brown and cut extremely short. She wore a fraying, sleeveless shirt and a ripped up pair of dark pants. A black tribal tattoo in the form of a great bird with outstretched wings lay down the length of her left arm to the elbow.

She drank her beer in silence, eyeing the room with suspicion and wariness. Aeron didn’t like unknowns, and she didn’t like not having any kind of hint as to who she was supposed to be meeting. It made her feel vulnerable and exposed, but she needed the money. Hopefully the guy would show up soon. The longer she sat here like a chump, the more uncomfortable and paranoid she would become.

Please forgive me if I don’t talk much at times. It’s loud enough in my head.

Ehoron sat in the dingy bar, nursing a drink, and staring out at the many within the halls. Although he did not mind the drink, it did little to hold his attention or satiate his desire to be on the move. Ever since he had been handed this assignment, he had been in a mood most foul. Normally, when these... assignments came up, he was usually in the proper mindscape for it, and relished the chance for death and destruction. However, he was hardly in the mood this time for such revelry. However, it fell to him to complete the job given to him nevertheless, lest he curry ill-fortune with the dark guild.

It was a simple enough task; kidnap the target and deliver them to the coordinates. Why it was felt that he needed another to accompany him was another point of contention: at best this addition was a liability, another chance for failure. At worst, this represented a means of oversight. Perhaps those running the dark guild were not as blind as he considered, given his many comings and goings. If they were attempting to tighten a collar around his neck with a lackey, they would be sorely disappointed.

His dour mood shifted however when a particular scent caught his attention. It was one that had been missing for some time, yet still managed to brighten his spirits for a moment. That he might find Trinity again... The brief respite in his mental anguish soon lapsed. How pitiful he felt, so easily roused to excitement at the thought of meeting someone barely less than a stranger. What was more, the idea that she might see him in the midst of such dark deeds gave him more pause. She would not approve.

However, those feelings soon became muddled with confusion as he realized that the scent came from a woman at the bar. However much she smelled the same as Trinity, she was most definitely not. The build was all wrong; too tall, thinner, with closely cropped hair. Why then did she smell just like Trinity. It was enough that he found himself staring at her for several minutes. When her own attention swept past him, for the briefest of moments he caught sight of a particular sign that indicated her secret allegiance. Confusion only deepened and he frowned for a moment while holding her gaze.

Standing up, he marched towards her with a deliberate pace so as to at least appear vaguely non-threatening and uninterested. When he got to her, he simply grunted. "Took you long enough. Come on, we've got a job to do." And with that, he turned and stepped out of the bar, leaving with it the question of why this woman smelled so familiar. Such curiosities had no place on a kidnapping job. "I take it you know the job. Got any details you want to fill me in on before we get started?" He asked quietly, with a surprising amount of edge in his voice. 'That's right... Have to keep up the act. No weakness. No hesitation.'

As her eyes panned the room, she found a man staring at her. At first she narrowed them in annoyance, mostly out of instinct, but it soon became apparent that he was the one she was supposed to meet here. At least, Aeron hoped he was. Otherwise she was about to have to deal with some guy walking over to bother her for something else, and she really wasn’t in the mood for that. This really would have been so much easier if they’d just given her something to go off of so she’d know who she was looking for.

He seemed a bit more confident than she was, at least, when he simply walked over and said it was time to go do the job. Aeron just stared at him in absolute shock as he turned without any further ado and headed out of the building like he expected her to follow. Excuse me? she asked, not at all pleased by his tone as she shoved herself out of her chair and stormed after him. She didn’t move with any intention of starting a fight, and her body language didn’t read as though she meant to do anything but catch up to walk with him, but she certainly wasn’t going to just let him talk to her like that.

“Yeah sure, I’ve got a few details for you. First of all, I got here early, same as you, so don’t you bitch at me like I did something wrong. Second of all, I suggest you drop that attitude with me before I give you a reason to have one.” Despite the harshness of her words, Aeron was actually keeping her voice pretty low so no one would overhear them as they made their way to the house in question. She glared at him hard with her bright blue eyes before finally looking away with annoyance and shoving her fists in her pockets with an irritated huff. It was just her luck to get stuck with some prick.

Getting up to the house wasn’t very difficult. There were plenty of lights on the main entrances, but almost nothing on the sides of the house. A couple of windows were opened a crack just to let a breeze through, but a bar on the inside prevented them from being opened further. The space wasn’t big enough for a hand to fit through either, so Aeron improved. “Give me a sec,” she whispered. Calling to the power that simmered in her core, Aeron’s body began to shrink until she was the size of a pixie, with a pair of colorful, butterfly like wings sprouted from her back.

She flew up to the sill and carefully squeezed her way inside. It was a tight fit, but she managed to get through. Once inside, she took a moment to look and listen, making sure no one was in the immediate area before returning to her normal form. Human in size once more, she easily pulled the bar out of place and quietly slid the window open so he could get in. “Any idea where the brat’s room is?” Aeron asked him, her voice barely loud enough to reach his ears let alone anyone else that might be in the house. This would go a lot more quickly if they knew exactly where they needed to go, but nothing in her life had ever been smooth so she suspected this would have to be done the hard way.

Please forgive me if I don’t talk much at times. It’s loud enough in my head.

'So she has a spine. Good,' Ehoron mused to himself while appraising the woman. Her little fit was more than ample material for him to get a sense for what sort of woman she was. 'Quick to anger, suggests high aggression or low opinion of self demanding an overcompensation to mask. Attempts to assert dominance after perceived power play, unlikely to willingly place self in vulnerable positions of power. Shocked at being told what to do, suggests a usual solitary pattern of behavior and living. Restraint in delivering reprimand despite agitation, suggests a degree of self-control when given time to collect self.'

He simply stared down at her, icy blue gaze met with sly emerald scrutiny. For all her agitation and warning, Ehoron merely grinned at her. The gesture caught the moonlight of the night revealing the elongated canines of his teeth, sharped to a pointed fang. "Trust me; were I looking to give you a 'bitching attitude'," he said with an audible quotation, "You would be much angrier. with me" His grin only widened at that, but he did not press the matter further as they turned to walk to their targetted mansion.

Finding the house was not terribly difficult; people with a great deal of money were not exactly known for their austerity. Family crests and emblazoned plaques made it all too clear as to whom occupied what house. Made their job that much easier. A quick assessment led them both to silently approach from the less illuminated side. A window was just barely ajar but secured with a bar that made entry impossible.  Before he could say anything on it to address the problem, the woman simply asked for a moment. Not one to tip his hand without reason, Ehoron was content to sit back and see what she had in mind.

He was grateful then when she began to shrink that he was behind her, otherwise, she would have seen the furrowing of his brows. It was not enough that she smelled eerily similar to Trinity, but she also appeared to have similar magic to the diminutive woman as she shrank down and sprouted wings. 'No... Not necessarily the same magic. Perhaps Faerie Take Over magic...' He mulled over the possibilities and coincidences, weighing over the implications of each. It did not do to dwell on the missing Trinity, especially given the present on-going job to handle.

As the window slipped open, Ehoron glanced up at the missing bar and chuckled to himself. 'No bad...' Putting one foot on the window sill of the first floor, he braced himself for a moment before launching himself up and over the edge of the second story window to land next to his partner with surprising silence. Instantly his body language was completely different. Before, he was loose and relaxed. Now his muscles coiled under the coat like vipers ready to strike, and there was a subtle predatory glint to his eyes now as he looked around for potential complications.

"This way," he responded almost curtly before setting off like a hunter stalking his prey. He did not bother to clarify how he knew where the girl's room was, no was he intending to if asked. It was good fortune for them that she was old enough, otherwise, it might have been difficult to track her down. He paused at an intersection and gave a very subtle sniff of the air, then again. Instantly he threw one hand out and launched a sudden burst of icy magic. The seemingly random and unprovoked display proved rather prophetic as an older gentleman in a butler's coat came around the corner holding a pot of tea over a tray. Before he could even shout an alarm, the magic erupted and froze him and the pot on the spot. "We don't have long. If you want to get out of here without more of a fuss, third door on the left down that hallway." He gestured and clearly intended for her to grab the girl while he seemed to ready himself for something else; exactly what, he did not say.

She scoffed when he looked down at her with what was probably the last expression she was expecting to see after going off on the man. “What the hell are you smiling at?” Aeron muttered irritably, somehow angrier by the notion that he wasn’t going to try to give her further lip. It felt more like he was brushing off her ire. So as he grinned down at her, her glare only deepened as he explained that she’d be much more upset if he was actually trying to set her off.

    “Whatever.”

Aeron didn’t bother asking for his name, nor was she inclined to offer her own. Besides the fact that this was the type of mission she did not want to be caught doing or have traced back to her, she already didn’t like or trust this person she’d been partnered with. Granted that was par for the course with her; Aeron didn’t like or trust anyone, even Thana. Especially Thana. Instead she just walked in simmering silence alongside him until they got to their destination and managed to work their way inside.

She eyed him warily when he vaulted easily into the open window and landed without making nary a sound, but made no remarks on it. Magic was a weird thing, and she had more important things to worry about than wondering what made him so light on his feet. His demeanor shifted visibly, altering from almost a bit lackadaisical to a predator on high alert. Somehow Aeron managed to suppress her surprise when he suddenly loosed an ice spell that encased a butler that had been walking through the home. Aeron made a mental note of the ice magic before he spoke up and indicated which room the girl was in, seeming to be of the mind to let her nab the daughter while he kept on the lookout for more people that could get in their way.

A part of her wanted to argue for the sake of arguing, but even she wasn’t that stupid. Her own preservation of self tended to overrule most everything else, and he was right; if they wanted to get out of here cleanly, they needed to work fast. Following his direction, she moved as quickly as she dared without making any noise to the aforementioned room. The daughter was still pretty young, only about seven years or so. Still young enough that she slept easily through the minute sounds of someone opening her door to come inside. The question now was how to get the kid out without raising an alarm. Kids had lungs like elephants and could scream bloody murder loud enough to wake the dead.

She looked around for a moment until she saw a jar with a lid on the girl’s desk. It was filled with little origami stars. That’ll work, Aeron thought to herself. Focusing her magic on the girl, she shrank the child’s body like she had her own only a minute or so ago. The process was gentle, and did not wake the girl. The woman snatched the jar and twisted the lid off, dumping out the paper shapes. Pulling out a knife, she stabbed a hole into the lid. Then, she picked the girl up by her nightgown.

This time, the child woke up. Her eyes darted open in a panic as she realized everything around her was huge, and that she was being held by a giant. She screamed, but her body was so tiny now that the sound hardly carried further than where Aeron stood. “Shut up, brat. No one cares,” she whispered, dumping the kid unceremoniously into the jar and then screwing the lid on tightly. Once that was done, Aeron carefully made her way back to her partner, lifting up the jar for him to see and giving it a little shake to show him the little girl crying and screaming with fear inside.

Please forgive me if I don’t talk much at times. It’s loud enough in my head.

Post by Emory Aldwyn 13th March 2019, 5:20 pm

By the time the woman had returned, Ehoron stood with a large sword seemingly made of ice held in one hand. He had extended the blade outward, leaving the tip of the blade to hover just shy of the old butler's throat. Both men turned to her and appraised the jar. The butler spoke first, clear distress in his ancient voice. "The young miss- Ah!" He quieted quickly when Ehoron gave a threatening gesture with the blade and held a finger to his lips.

"Ah ah ah," he whispered dangerously while slowly circling around, careful to leave the tip of his sword within easy stabbing distance of the man's throat. "Now now, we wouldn't want any harm to come to the 'young miss', would we? As it stands, she's just being taken on a little.... field trip. Keep quiet, and we won't have to spill any blood tonight. She'll come back soon enough, safe and sound, and her daddy dearest will have learned a lesson or two about refusing services and protection from the wrong people." He bared his teeth as he spoke, sharpened canines glistening dangerously in the night light and only further driving home his point.

The butler seemed to deflate at that, and that little collapse of resistance was all Ehoron needed. The sword vanished in a flash and a quick heel kick to the side of the man's temple caused him to collapse in an unconscious heap. It wasn't silent, but they did not need utter silence, now that they had the girl in tow. "Out the window, quickly." Ehoron waited for the woman to jump out before letting loose a couple of quick jets of ice. It left a nice, ominous little symbol to make clear who had done this nefarious deed; a request from their employer. Now the Baron would fully grasp the consequences of his little stunt, and would quickly capitulate to the demands of his superiors.

Jumping out a moment later, Ehoron landed and ignored the sick feeling in his gut. "Come on, let's get the girl to the drop-off and get paid." Although he had relaxed again into his prior demeanor, Ehoron could not quite hide his distaste at what they had done. It was one thing to attack an adult, someone who had the means and will to fight back, but a child? 'No. No. Don't mess this up now. Just focus and get paid.'

By the time they got to the drop off point, the once warm night air had quickly begun to chill. Clouds began to form overhead; an ominous sign of the weather's shift. Ehoron stepped inside and simply stood by without a word while the woman produced the jar and grew the girl back to her proper size. The satchel of jewels he was handed did little to calm his nerves as the girl began to wail in terror. He did not bother waiting outside for the woman, nor did he care enough to strike up one last conversation. He simply stuffed the satchel into his coat and stalked off into the night, taking the cold air and growing clouds with him.
