"Character counts most when duty calls."

The Yule holiday was quickly approaching. Serilda had completed near about all of her Christmas shopping for her family and friends. The presents for her friends in Minstrel had been mailed several days before, the things she got for her few closer allies in Sabertooth had already been delivered, and she had everything packed up and ready to go for her trip to Clover tomorrow. The only thing she had left was Mythal's gift, which she already planned but hadn't exactly worked up the courage to talk to him about yet.

The catch was that it required him to go with her to her parents’ home in Clover. Mythal wasn't always comfortable around rich folk, and he only recently learned that Serilda came from more than just a wealthy family. He'd been so shocked when he learned about her noble status that he'd spit out an entire mouthful of liquor in front of hundreds of people at a ball. She wasn't entirely certain how he'd feel about actually going to her parents’ house, and meeting her family.

More than that, there was a part of her that was a bit trepidatious about the idea of introducing him. She didn't know why; it's not like they were dating or anything. But he was still the closest friend she'd ever had, and she did care about what her family would think of him. Serilda was sure they wouldn't have any issues with him, but she wanted them to do more than that. She wanted them to like him.

But, she couldn't wait much longer to extend the invite. For all she knew, he already had plans for the holidays. With a sigh, she picked up her iLac and pulled up her texting conversation with Mythal. She looked at it nervously for a couple minutes, collecting her thoughts and trying to figure out the best way to phrase what she wanted to say. Finally, she started typing.

Hey! I'm sorry, I know this is last minute but… I was curious if you had any plans for the holiday? I'm going home to Clover tomorrow and will be staying the night. You're welcome to come too, if you want. Don't feel pressured. I'll understand if you already have plans or don't want to. I would just enjoy spending time with you on the holiday.

She reread the message probably twenty times before finally pressing send.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

While Serilda had been doing her best to prepare for the holiday by the means of purchasing gifts for her friends and family, Mythal had… not. The Yule holiday hadn’t been something he had celebrated in a long time, if ever. Gren had given presents to him as a child and explained what the meaning of the holiday was but it had never really clicked. It was another day as far as he was concerned and he had no intention of doing anything special during it. He wasn’t even planning on going on any jobs; he would simply stay at home and… find something else to do. He wasn’t sure what at the moment but that didn’t really matter either.

He just gotten back from a job and was walking in through the front door of his home when his iLac buzzed. It wasn’t unusual for his iLac to go off a fair amount nowadays; since Serilda had acquired one, they had sent messages back and forth pretty consistently. It was a way of keeping in contact so they could coordinate with job postings and getting together for food or otherwise. Granted they did seem to message each other a lot during the evening hours, catching up about their days and everything before going to bed. He simply figured she was either alerting him to a job or something. But as he brought the device up and flipped over to the message, he was… a bit surprised by what he saw.

Apparently she did have plans for the holiday and was looking to see if he wanted to come with her to her home? A slight knot formed in his stomach as he read the message a few times, his brow slightly furrowed. He had only recently found out that she was an heiress and while that didn’t really bother him, there was the matter of her family. Mythal was… not rich or rich looking in the least. The idea of some sloppy nobody spending time with their heiress daughter probably wouldn’t excite many parents, even if they were only friends. She had said he didn’t need to feel pressured to come with her and she’d understand if he didn’t want to…

The problem is, while he didn’t celebrate the holiday personally, he did want to spend some time with Serilda. And getting to know her family wouldn’t be the… worst thing on the planet, right? So long as he wasn’t about to walk into an inquisition into his past. Plus would it be the worst thing to celebrate the holiday for once? He honestly didn’t know; but it seemed like he was going to find out. He pulled up the keyboard and started typing back.

Hey. I didn’t have plans, nah. But I would enjoy spending time with you. I’d be down to go to Clover. You sure it’s gonna be okay? I don’t want to intrude.

While she waited for him to reply, Serilda busied herself with cleaning up around her home. Since she was going to be away for a couple days she wanted to make sure the house was straightened up for when she came home. It didn’t take him too long to reply, and his answer brought a smile to her face.

It’s no intrusion, she typed back. My parents don’t host any big parties or anything, but they usually encourage us to bring a guest. It wasn’t a complete lie. Typically her sisters had a significant other with them, and her brother occasionally had a friend over for dinner. Serilda just didn’t mention that she had already asked her parents about bringing him and they’d made the arrangements. She was just glad he said yes. I’ll be heading out tomorrow morning. Want to just meet at the station in Oshibana?

They worked out the specifics together and soon had a plan. She’d made it clear to him that he wasn’t obligated to bring anything, though if he was anything like her he might try to anyway. She didn’t give any indication of the biggest reason why she was inviting him, which was to give him a gift that could only be picked up in Clover. Serilda wanted to surprise him. She had a feeling he had only celebrated Christmas as a child, if he’d ever really celebrated it at all. He was going to be a little overwhelmed, she knew, but he wouldn’t regret coming.

She would make sure of it.

The next morning at about ten o’clock, the train pulled into Oshibana station. Serilda had rented one of the private cabins at the front of the train, and the attendants were aware that she was picking someone up here. Xiuh was sitting happily on the bench across from her, head sticking out the window so she could smell the fresh air. When Mythal made his way to the cabin, he almost wouldn’t be able to get through the door because the hound would eagerly jump down and try to assault him with kisses and affection.

Serilda chuckled. “Xiuh, let the poor man in…” Smiling at him a little, she stood and helped him find a place for any luggage he may have brought. Then, she gave him a small hug. “Good to see you. I’m glad you decided to come. I was afraid the idea of a couple days around noble folk might scare you off.” Her smile shifted into a slight smirk that betrayed she was teasing him. At this point, Serilda more than understood that Mythal’s thoughts about most rich people were going to stop him from spending time with her when he really wanted to -- the ball in Minstrel had been proof enough of that.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal had moved over to the couch as he waited for her to type back. He stared at the screen, not exactly sure what answer he was waiting for. When it lit up to show her reply, he couldn’t help the small smile as she assured him it wouldn’t be a bother at all. And like that, it seemed he had plans for the holiday. He typed back a response, giving her the final answer of yes before working out the rest of the plans with her. They were going to meet in Oshibana in the morning and they would take the train to Clover – a fairly easy trip considering. Well, if he was staying the night at her parent’s place, then he should probably bring something a bit more… dapper to wear.

When the morning came, he was more than prepared. Luckily the old warrior had left some baggage for his use and he had opened up and packet a few necessities. Given her title and the family behind it, he felt it was better that he show up looking, at the very least, properly attired. First impressions mattered the most or so he was told. He generally didn’t care what people thought of him but… Serilda’s family was different. He didn’t want her to regret inviting him with him looking like some kind of punk off the street. Why he cared, he couldn’t put into words. He just… did.

The train arrived and he loaded up his bag over his shoulder as he boarded the still steaming vessel. She had told him she had rented one of the private cabins at the front, so they could ride together without having to share space with other people. He glanced at his phone to check the room number once more and then knocked before proceeding to enter. He knew he was in the right place immediately as Xiuhco met him with all the love and affection the hound could muster. He chuckled as he rubbed her head, scratching her right behind the ears as usual. “Nice to see you too, Xiuhco,” he greeted the hound before he pushed his way into the cabin completely.

She’d find him wearing a familiar outfit. It was the same white suit jacket, pants and shoes he had worn to the ball, still as primped and clean as they had been that night. He’d traded out the gray button up shirt for a crimson one, though he had buttoned it up a few notches to keep from showing way too much chest at a family gathering. Even his hair was slightly shaped, though it looked more like he’d used water to imitate its form from the ball. As she hugged him, he returned it in earnest, holding her tight against him and relishing in the feeling. She teased him and he raised an eyebrow, smirking down at her. “It sure tried. But then I thought about you and me alone in a train for couple of hours and…” He seemed to hint towards something, his smirking spreading into a slightly cheeky smile. In fact, he almost seemed to be slightly dipping her, as if he was already getting ready to lay her down…

But then he laughed and righted her back, finally releasing her, though his fingers traced along the outside of her hand as he stepped back. “It’ll be… new. I forgot this day was a holiday until you brought it up last night. Oh speaking of… Happy Christmas… or… yeah, that’s right,” he said, sitting down on the bench that Xiuhco had once occupied.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

She was surprised to see him walk in wearing the suit from the ball, albeit with a different shirt. He even looked like he at least made an attempt to do something with his hair. Mythal clearly was wanting to make an effort to look presentable around her family, and it was a sentiment she appreciated -- which was why she didn’t tell him that he hadn’t needed to. Aside from giving her parents a simple message that he was more of a private man that didn’t particularly like to talk about his past, she hadn’t made any other explanations on his behalf as far as his social standing or wealth or anything else. Frankly, she didn’t feel like she needed to. He was her friend, someone she cared about greatly that also cared for her, and it would be disrespectful to him to feel the need to explain him to her family.

But he was trying of his own volition to appear presentable for the occasion, and she wasn’t going to undermine that. Instead, she smiled as he looked down on her. He bent her back just a bit, speaking a few flirtatious words that simultaneously sent a rush of excitement and panic through her veins before he straightened them both back up, having only been teasing her. As he told her he had mostly forgot there was even at holiday at all, Serilda reached up and used the fingers of her free hand to smooth out a few strands of his hair that had fallen out of place. If he was making the effort, she may as well do her part to make sure it stuck, after all.

“Merry Christmas,” Serilda told him happily, her tone not correcting the phrase he’d used so much as simply returning the sentiment in kind. They both sat back down, Xiuh jumping up on the bench next to Serilda and curling up against the woman comfortably. “I guess I should say, on the note about being alone together…” She blushed a little, as she often did when the subject of intimacy came up. “I imagine you’ve already assumed as much, but my parents will put you in a guest room rather than letting you stay with me in mine. Propriety and all that…”

Serilda was sure he would understand, though she did feel the need to let him know ahead of time just in case. She also went on to tell him, “I also haven’t really told them much about the… nature of our friendship. Or really much about you at all besides your name and how I know you.” It wasn’t that she was ashamed of him -- obviously she wasn’t, if she was bringing him home for the holidays where he would meet her family. It was more that she understood that he didn’t like his name being passed around often, knowing that somewhere out there Faera was probably still looking for him. In fact, she hadn’t told the ladies from Minstrel about him for that same reason. She respected and understood his need for privacy, to the point where she even kept their own friendship simply between the two of them.

But it also meant that he didn’t really have to worry about coming here wondering if her parents knew that the two of them had slept together several times or not. However the two of them chose to act or behave toward one another in front of her family was really up to them. “Though I will say they do know a bit about you already, due to your status with Fairy Tail and the Magic Council.” Serilda was, of course, referring to his status as a rising star. “Since a lot of guild wizards meet in Clover, they get news pretty fast from Era. And given that a lot of those jobs were ones we both worked on… well, they’re aware of some of what you and I have accomplished together, at least.”

He stood there for an extra moment, letting her fix his hair. Though he had certainly been teasing her about spending some quality time in the private car in other means, he did seem to meet her gaze with a bit of… some kind of emotion. She returned his sentiment to him and he smiled, a truly genuine sign of his happiness that she had invited him along. Rather than dip her this time, he did lean forward and plant a gentle kiss on her lips, holding it there for a moment before he pulled back. “Merry Christmas. Right,” he said, smiling down at her.

After that, they separated and sat across from one another. The hound took its place against her, lying down and getting comfortable for the long trip. Mythal leaned back, putting his arms behind his head so he could rest on them. He listened with a raised brow as she brought up the fact that while they were at her parent’s house, he would be staying in the guest room. “Yeah, I figured as much. Not like we’re datin’ or… married, you know,” he said, scratching the back of his head. “Just spendin’ time with you is enough for me. I don’t always need you sleepin’ next to me.” He let that hang in the air before he shot her a wry grin. “Just means you’ll have to make it up to me, Ice Queen,” he teased her, referencing back to the nickname he had given her back at the Inn. While it hadn’t been an overly joyous job to take part in at first, the title had always sort of struck him as humorous. She wasn’t even that cold.

Hearing that she had told her family the bare minimum was nice, honestly. He was still very private, considering everything that had happened and what knowing his past could bring to people. It was also the fact that he believed it wasn’t anyone’s business but his own. But he hadn’t been worried about her telling her family – she was the only person he had entrusted almost all his secrets to and that hadn’t been easy. Trusting her that much meant he knew she could honestly and thoroughly be trusted. As she continued and explained that she knew his position within Fairy Tail and within the Magic Council’s eyes, he sighed and shook his head but more out of humored exasperation than anything else. “Yeah, doubt many don’t know ‘bout that now. But hey, if they know we’ve worked together, they know that we work well together. Good enough for me.”

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Serilda accepted the kiss with a soft smile, lingering until he pulled away. There was something in his eyes as he looked at her, but she didn’t read too much into it. Frankly, she was just happy he’d decided to come, and not just because she enjoyed spending time with him. The Voidwalker was thoroughly looking forward to giving him his gift -- or rather, giving him the chance at it, as it were.

    But more on that later.

He spoke up that he figured they wouldn’t be staying together, given that they weren’t exactly a couple. Although, he did follow up the sentiment with one saying that she could simply make it up to him later. Serilda smirked at him mischievously. “Careful what you wish for, boozer,” she teased, one hand idly rubbing Xiuh along her flank as the hound dozed. It was entertaining how many times their last argument got brought up between them in a humorous light, given how close that fight had come to ending their friendship before it really had a chance to begin.

Though Mythal wasn’t exactly thrilled about how much acclaim he’d been receiving from the Council recently, he did seem satisfied that her family was at least aware of his connection to Serilda through their work together. At the very least, it would hopefully mean there would be less awkward questions.

The ride into Clover was a relaxing one, as they just chatted and spent time together. After a couple hours, they finally found themselves in the city in question. There was a nice car waiting for them at the station, and the driver for it was dressed just as smartly as the vehicle looked. He greeted “Lady Serilda” with a genuine smile, welcoming her home and greeting Mythal. Soon, their bags were in the trunk and the two of them were being driven to her childhood home.

The house itself was removed from the main city of Clover, closer to the mountains and the forests on the outskirts of the city. After about an hour drive they pulled up to the house. Or, well, mansion. There was enough of a clearing around the massive three story home to ensure that none of the tall trees would ever fall on it, but just past that perimeter the woods from the mountains stretched as far as the eye could see. There were traditional things one would expect at a wealthy estate: fountains, gardens, sculptures, etc. Though all things considered, it really wasn’t as gaudy looking as one might expect. It was tasteful and aesthetic, with nothing odd sticking out like it was just there to show off money.

The driver let them out of the car, and a couple other servants were already opening the trunk to take the luggage inside. They greeted Serilda just as authentically as the other, clearly happy that she was home. It wouldn’t take much to see that these were people who enjoyed their jobs and were well taken care of in their positions. One of them took the initiative to inform her that her father was in his office, so that’s where she would take them first.

The entryway of the home was crafted primarily of white marble, circular in shape with a few pillars and a crystal chandelier, with purple drapes and carpets to accentuate the brightness and bring it down a notch. A few doors and hallways awaited on either side of this area, but Serilda lead Mythal through the center toward a curved staircase in the back that would take them upstairs. Serilda pointed out one or two places along the way, promises to give him a full tour later if he would like one. Xiuh followed them obediently the whole time, though Serilda could sense that she longed to go exploring the grounds outside.

They came to a door at the far end of the hallway on the second floor, where the marble flooring turned to wood. The room was a study of sorts, with bookshelves lining every wall and a few large painting between them. There were a few comfortable looking chairs and a large desk. Behind that desk sat Serilda’s father. He appeared to be in his mix sixties, with hair just as white as Serilda’s on both his head and his chin, all of which was neatly trimmed and combed. He wore a thin pair of spectacles over his eyes, and was dressed in a tailored, dark brown suit.

    “Merry Christmas, father.”

The man looked up from the ledgers on his desk at the pair standing in the doorway. His eyes set first on Serilda, and then on Mythal for a moment before, he said, “Merry Christmas, Seri.” To outsiders he might appear cold or disinterested in the fact that his eldest daughter was home, but the truth was that he was very happy to see her. However, Mythal had spent enough time around her that he might be able to read through some of the intricacies of their interactions. Like Serilda, the rest of her family -- for the most part -- was just as professional in their demeanors as she was. But he did immediately close his books and set them in a locked drawer before standing and coming around the desk to greet them.

Though he did not embrace her fully, he did take her arm momentarily and placed an affectionate kiss on her cheek. Turning, Serilda introduced them. “This is my friend and associate Mythal Ragnos. Mythal, this is my father Duke Byron.”

Byron offered Mythal a hand to shake, looking him coolly in the eyes though not with any suspicion or arrogance. “Wonderful to meet you, Mythal. I’ve heard many good things about your work. Welcome to my home. I trust the trip was uneventful?”

'Tis the Season Empty Re: 'Tis the Season

Post by Mythal Ragnos on 30th December 2018, 4:43 pm

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Ice Queen hadn't been a nickname he intended to keep utilizing for her but for some reason, it just fit. The pure white hair, her pale but cool skin and her professional attitude that could be ice cold to people that didn't really know her. It made her teasing her all the more fun. She gave it right back, calling him a booze, which only made him grin back at her. He did enjoy that she was comfortable enough to joke about the event that had nearly torn them apart.

Their trip was fairly relaxing for the most part, the each of them talking and taking it easy. In no time at all, the train was pulling into the Clover station. As they departed from the train, there was an expensive looking car and a professional driver waiting for them. He greeted the Voidwalker with a proper title, looking quite happy to see her again. Mythal greeted the man in earnest before helping pack the bags into the back and climbing into the car itself.

To call her home a house would be doing it a disservice. It was a grand home, practically a castle but more likely considered a mansion. The God Slayer stared at it, unblinking as it towered above them. As he looked around, he was surprised at how… homely everything seemed. The house was large, sure but it wasn't overly lavish or pompous. It seemed, just like Serilda, her family didn't believe in showing off their wealth. At least in material things.

They stopped and got out, greeted by a handful of servants. They were cordial, even familiar, with Serilda, acting more like family members than family workers. There wasn't any bitterness in their forms, no bite in their tone at their occupations. It was like they had gotten into the serving business because they enjoyed it. That hadn't been his history with servants but as with humans, there were always differing situations. It seemed they would be greeting Serilda’s father first, being led to his office.

They entered the wondrous entryway, the God Slayer taking in the view. He took a moment to look around, turning in place to take on each part. It was all… very bright. He bit back the displeasure at the brightness, noting that it wasn't his place to comment on. Serilda brought him up the staircase, the steps taking up the entire back wall. She made mention of a few noted places, promising that she'd give him a more in depth tour later. It was going to be as long a tour as walking about the caste in Minstrel at this point but worth it.

At the end of the hall, there was the aforementioned study. There was a shift in aesthetic, definitely looking more like a place to read and work than to rest. Mythal had never been much of a reader so such a place of knowledge was lost on him. But as they entered, they were greeted by the sight of Serilda's father, posted behind the desk. He was a man in the ending twilight of his middle age, though truthfully he probably had that white hair all his life. Serilda greeted him with the same business formality that she did with anyone else -- well most anyone. And he returned it in kind, showing just how mannered the whole family must have been. It almost felt like they were greeting one another as strangers but it was something her family practiced. He had assumed that's what he was going to be coming into though, having been around Serilda enough.

He was introduced in kind after the two shared a more familiar greeting. He took the man's hand and shook it firmly. “Lord Byron, thank you for your hospitality,” he said. “Yeah it was a fairly easy trip from Oshibana. Also I wanted to thank you for takin’ me in for the holiday.” He reached into the small pack he always carried and pulled out a bottle of wine. It was a fairly pricey bottle, something he normally wouldn't go out of his way to buy. He offered it to the man. “Merry Christmas, sir. I hope you and your enjoy it.”

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Byron accepted the wine bottle and looked at the label. “An excellent year, and one of my wife’s favorites. Thank you.” It was a short response, but Serilda at least could hear the honest appreciation in her dad’s voice. Mythal had made an excellent choice in a host gift, and it wouldn’t go unnoticed. For now, her father placed the bottle on his desk.

    “Has anyone else arrived yet?”

“Jodie and Solomon are in the parlor with Jenna and Louis. Scarlet and Owen will probably be here within an hour or two.”

    “Mother?”

“At the kennels. Did you want to go there now, or..?”

Serilda gave it thought for a brief moment before shaking her head. “No, I think I’ll show Mythal around a bit here, first, and then we’ll head that way.”

“Very well. I’m just working on this month’s expenses. I’ve a bit more to do, but should be done before supper. Mythal, if you need anything at all while you’re here, don’t be afraid to ask. Serilda or one of the servants will see to it.”

And like that, the meeting with her father was over. Serilda lead Mythal back into the hallway before shooting him a small smile. “Good choice with the wine. I won’t be surprised it that’s gone before dinner starts.” As her friend would later find out, her family was perhaps a bit more refined in their drinking habits than the Slayer was, but they did greatly enjoy having a few drinks.

Starting the tour, Serilda took him up to the third floor first. That floor had her parents’ master suite and the bedrooms for her and her siblings, though the only one she showed him the inside of was her own. It had the same cream marbling that much of the rest of the house did, but with blue accents instead of purple like the downstairs had. There was a vanity next to a door that lead to a private bathroom, and a chaise next to a large windowed door with a balcony beyond. A good size fireplace was on the wall across from the bed, with a lacrimavision set onto the wall above the hearth. Also on the third floor was a spacious lounge with some couches and a mini bar.

The second floor had more bedrooms, these ones for guests. Serilda showed Mythal where he would be staying. This room was one of the firsts with carpet, and had a bit of a bent shape to it. A king sized bed faced the windows, and over another smaller fireplace was another lacrimavision. Like Serilda’s, there was also a balcony as well as a private bathroom. His belongings had already been brought in by the servants and placed by the foot of the bed.

Back down on the first floor was where things got a little more varied. There was a lavish lounge with a massive fireplace and half a dozen couches attached to a large set of double doors that lead into an extravagant formal dining hall. These were clearly the areas intended for large gatherings and parties. Over the mantle of the fireplace was a big painted portrait of Serilda’s family, clearly done some time ago as Serilda and her father would look a decade or so younger than now. A twelve foot Christmas tree stood tall in a corner beneath a light on the ceiling. It was decorated with shining ornaments and small white lights, lace bows, and a star at the top. There were several gifts beneath the lowest boughs of the tree, and a servant was just finishing unloading the ones that Serilda herself had brought.

Also on the first floor was a large library with bookshelves that reached all the way up to the ceiling. There were two kitchens, each with a different purpose. The first was a smaller one with the basic amenities, used by the immediate family during times that they prepared their own meals. Attached to it was a much larger one used by the kitchen staff, from which there was already a pouring aroma of exquisite smelling food. Serilda didn’t really walk Mythal through that room since it was packed with cooks getting ready for what looked to be a huge meal -- much larger than just her family.

After returning greetings from the workers in there, the two of them ducked back out and she explained, “Typically, my parents still have the servants working on Christmas and other holidays, but he makes arrangements for them. They still prepare the house for our meals and set things ready for us, but there is a separate building behind ours with more room. The servants set that place up as well, and once their duties are done they’re dismissed for the rest of the day. Their families meet here to spend the holiday with them at their leisure.” So while the two of them would only be spending the day with her immediate family, the cooks were preparing a feast for themselves and their own loved ones, presumably at the duke’s expense.

One of the last rooms Serilda showed him was the parlor, which was a fair bit more modernized than the rest of the home. It still had the luxurious architecture, but this space was meant for more youthful entertainment. There were billiard tables and a felt top poker table, as well as a full sized bar that was stocked full of just about any beer, wine, or liquor that a person could want. A lacrimavision that took up nearly an entire wall was set in front of a large wrap around couch, and the wall leading to the outside was lined with windows up to the ceiling. Beyond the glass patio doors was a pool and jacuzzi, which were protected from the snow and weather by a sturdy overhang. By the steam rising off the spa and the fact that the pool wasn’t frozen over, it was clear that these were kept warmed for winter use.

Inside this room were most of Serilda’s siblings. It was easy to tell which were related to her, because like her all of her siblings had white hair and shared similar features. They were talking around a pool table as a couple of them played, but greeted the pair and waved them over. Jenna was the closest to her in age, looking only a year or two younger. Of the other two siblings present, Jodie appeared to be in her late teens or early twenties, and Solomon -- the only son -- couldn’t have been more than seventeen or eighteen. With them was Jenna’s husband, a man with brown hair and an easy smile. Though her siblings did seem to share the same reserved personality traits as the rest of her family, it was clear that the siblings were a bit more lively with one another.

After chatting for a couple minutes, Serilda promised they’d come back and took Mythal outside. As they casually crossed the grounds toward what looked to be a large barn of some sorts, she looked at him with a small smile and asked, “I haven’t overwhelmed you yet, have I?”

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

What a goddamn lucky blind shot that was.

The wine had been a last minute gift, something he had felt compelled to get for the sake of propriety’s sake. If they were offering their home for him to stay in, it was good manners to get something for the host as a guest, right? He had honestly gone into the market street of Oshibana and stopped at the fanciest liquor store he could find and asked their opinion on the matter. This had been their selection and their suggestion, even bumping off the price to help the poor man with ‘meeting the parents’. He didn’t quite understand what their tone meant – it was just meeting his friend’s parents, after all.

“Glad to hear it, sir,” he replied with a gentle nod of his head, having a much better grasp of his mumbling anti-social anxiety than normal. Amazing what he could do when he actually focused up. The conversation shifted with back to Serilda and her father, talking about the other arrivals and where her mother was located. He asked if she wanted to go the kennels and the Voidwalker paused in thought. That was odd; he’d thought she would take the time to introduce him first before showing him around. In the end, she decided to finish the tour. The God Slayer was fine with whatever she thought was best, even if he did wonder at the odd choice. They bid her father a temporary goodbye before departing, heading back into the hallway.

He chuckled, scratching the back of his head. “Yeah, that was a shot in the dark. Sounds like luck was on my side this time,” he admitted. He was surprised she had said that the bottle would probably be gone before dinner – considering her drinking habits, he had imagined that her entire family was the kind to have a bottle of wine for dinner, split among everyone. More evidence that his assumptions were almost completely based on speculation.

They started at the top, where the family resided during their nights. The only room he got an in depth tour in was her room, which was as regal as he expected. Elegant marble coating with golden designs on the walls and pillars and a royal blue hue for the accentuated off-color. He walked around and whistled as he took the sights in. “Not bad for an heiress,” he said, nodding. Actually being in here, not just the room but the mansion, was making that fact stick with a bit more effect. It didn’t change his words he had said to her but he was beginning to understand her a bit better now.

The second floor was basically where he would be staying for the night, the entire level filled with guest bedrooms. The Voidwalker walked him to his room, where his stuff had already been placed cordially. It wasn’t as lavish as the upstairs room but it was still spacious and neat, easily the size of his entire upstairs at his house. The windows faced the bed, with no curtains to draw but he couldn’t expect guest rooms to simply accommodate his every small nuisances. He could live with a little sunlight in the morning. “It’ll probably be like sleeping on a cloud,” he remarked as he pushed down on the bed, testing its resistance to his body weight.

Finally they returned to the ground floor and fully explored it beyond the entryway. They started in the lounge, that was clearly meant for after dinner discussions and relaxation. Through a pair of doors was the dining hall that quite encapsulated the word ‘hall’ – a room like this could handle a full party of people easily. He stopped near the fireplace, taking in the sight of the family portrait above it. “Wow. Who knew you used to be adorable?” he asked with a cheeky grin as he nodded at the younger Serilda. It was quite the picturesque painting, if a bit professional looking. Still, it was far more than he could say he had of his lineage. A large Christmas tree had been set in the corner, nearly twice his size from foot to head. It was wondrously dressed, flowing with light and colorful ornaments and a bright star standing pert at the top. He’d never seen anything like it before, having never had a proper Christmas tree. There was always the mass of gifts that rested underneath the lowest branches.

They also had two kitchens, which was unique to hear. As they walked by it, Serilda explained how the holiday worked for both her family and the servants that tended them. Apparently they were asked to prepare the house and meals as normal but once everything was set and ready to go, they were excused for the rest of the day. Not only that but their own families were invited into another building to dine together with their working family members, enabling them the opportunity to have their own Christmas feast. It was… interesting to see that this family, Serilda’s family, actually treated their help like people rather than instruments. A lot of his assumptions about rich families were suddenly coming to light and proving false, at least with this particular family.

The last room they went into was the parlor, which was more suited for entertaining guests on the younger side. It was probably where all the children would go to hang out and blow off some steam from… whatever rich kids did. And as they entered, they were greeted by all of Serilda’s siblings that had settled in already. He was introduced to them one after the other, doing his best to set their names to memory so he wouldn’t forget who he was talking to. He did warn ahead of time that he was pretty terrible with names, referencing the time he had accidentally called Serilda Selma.

After they had talked to the younger Sinclairs for a bit, the Voidwalker brought Mythal outside into the cool air. They were crossing the grounds when she turned and checked on him, making sure his head wasn’t spinning off at the tip. “Please, you’ve seen what kind of punishment I can take,” he said with a wry smirk before settling into a more genuine smile. “No, it’s just… odd. It’s been so long since I’ve been in an actual home, with an actual family. I forgot what it was like. Granted this is a much bigger place than I’m used to. But you ain’t scared me away yet.”

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Serilda rolled her eyes when he teased her about the younger portrait of herself, barely suppressing her smirk. It was a fairly common theme with them. He enjoyed making off hand comments to get reactions out of her, but he never said anything that she didn’t find amusing on some level. Her siblings assured him they understood when he explained that he would do his best to remember their names. Few people were ever great with names. Serilda was one of those few, but that was due to her upbringing and status as an heiress. Plus, her journaling which greatly sharpened her memory for details.

As they walked across the grounds, Mythal teased her a bit with his answer to her question. She grinned back at him and almost a little too casually said, “Oh, well I guess I’ll have to try harder, then.”

Off through the distance there were a number of things he would notice. There was a large pond, or perhaps it was a small lake, on the property that was currently frozen over from the winter. There was also what appeared to be a family graveyard a bit further out past it. Close to the barn there was a corral where a few horses lazily nipped at what little grass was poking through the thin layer of snow on the ground. There was a well used private road that seemed to stretch out into the mountains themselves, and nestled against it at the base of the mountains was a very large warehouse looking building.

When they entered the barn, they were greeted with the scents of hay and manure. Mythal’s sensitive nose would likely pick up a large number of scents for different farm animals, from horses to chicken. Serilda could sense Xiuh’s excitement at returning to a familiar place. In fact, the pup could probably smell her mother and a few of the siblings from her litter that were still at the home.

“Mother?” Serilda called out, sensing the woman’s body in one of the stalls down the way.

    “Down here.”

The two of them moved down until they found Serilda’s mom where she was looking over a horse with one of the stable hands. Once they finished their discussion -- it seemed the horse had thrown a shoe -- the woman stepped out to greet them. She also had bright white hair, though her eyes were gray rather than blue. Where Byron was dressed as one might expect of a duke, the duchess had on surprisingly grungy working clothes. It was clear she was a bit more of a manual laborer, right at home in the filth and mess of the barn and its animals -- though her clothes were still remarkably clean, all things considered.

She also was a bit more free with her emotions. A small smile, but a smile nonetheless, crossed her face as she hugged her daughter. “Seri, it’s so good to see you, sweetheart.” Turning her attention to the man before Serilda could get the chance, the woman took the initiative to do her own introduction. “You must be Mythal. I’m Miriam, Serilda’s mother.” Rather than offer him a hand to shake, it seemed this woman was a little more warm than the rest of her family. She gave Mythal a small hug, nothing too overwhelming but certainly more openly affectionate with new people than anyone else he’d met so far, including Serilda herself.

Of course, she also had to give the hound attention. Xiuh was practically wiggling a hole into the dirt with excitement at seeing the woman that had helped rear her. “Xiuhcoatl, come here, beautiful!” the woman said with a tone of inviting eagerness as she knelt to the ground. The wolf wuffed softly and even whined a bit with happiness but stayed where she was -- which was good, because it appeared the woman’s actions had been a test. “Very good, Seri,” she said, giving her daughter a small smile. “Still as silly as ever, but that’s part of your charm, isn’t it girl?”

Serilda smirked a bit and signaled for the wolf to do as she pleased. Soon, the duchess was being smothered with dog kisses. After giving attention to the pup for a few minutes, she stood back up and the Voidwalker waved the pup off. Xiuh raced out of sight into another part of the barn to search and smell, likely looking for the other wolves to play with. Miriam gave Serilda a pointed look and asked, “So are you here for the thing..?”

The question had caught Serilda a bit off guard and it took her a second to formulate her answer. A bit shyly, she replied, “Well, I had just come to find you and say hi, and introduce you to Mythal but… I suppose since we’re here. I just… need a minute.”

Her subtle tone clearly conveyed some unspoken communication with the older woman, who raised a slight brow with interest but said no more. “Very well. I’ll go get them ready.”

Serilda nodded and then waited a bit awkwardly as her mom turned and walked away, disappearing down the same row in the barn that Xiuh had run down minutes ago. Blushing a little, the Voidwalker turned to him and said, “So… I may not have been… entirely forthcoming with my real reason for inviting you here. I mean, a large part of it was definitely wanting to spend more time with you and having you around for the holiday but… I also have a gift for you that I couldn’t give you in Oshibana.”

It was surprisingly hard for her to bring this up without feeling a bit overwhelmed with her own emotions about this. In fact, she was also having a harder time than usual holding eye contact with him, though not out of any sense of shame. If anything it was more a sudden shyness that she had displayed with him before, just not very often. “It’s hard because it’s not exactly something I have full control of. All I can really give you is the opportunity…” Her voice trailed off and she realized she was beating around the bush.

She reached up and brushed her bangs behind her ear. “Xiuh’s mother had a new litter about three months ago, and the puppies are now at an age where they can be tried for bonding. I… wanted to give you a chance to have one. If that sounds like something you’d want…” Serilda did look up at him a bit then, perhaps even nervously. There was, of course, the possibility that he wouldn’t even be interested in having a wolf of his own -- which would honestly be mortifying after all this effort. Though given the way he acted around Xiuhcoatl, she had a feeling he would more likely want one than not.

“I sure hope you do, cause I’m going to be honest I don’t have a back up gift planned,” she joked timidly, trying to throw a bit of humor out to cover the rest of her screaming emotions.

'Tis the Season Empty Re: 'Tis the Season

Post by Mythal Ragnos on 30th December 2018, 4:49 pm

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Would he learn her sibling’s names in time? It wasn't out of the question. They were important to Serilda and that meant a fair amount to him. They were understanding of his predicament though, telling him it was understandable. It was true that not many people could remember names easily but Mythal was atrocious for saying the wrong name in ill-fated attempts. Who knew if it would continue to bite him in the ass.

The walk across the grounds was nice; being able to see that the lack of lavish designed statues and monetary ornaments put him at better ease. But that wasn't to say that the property wasn't rich with flavor, quite the opposite in fact. There was a frozen lake in the distance, that was surely used for swimming and perhaps even fishing. They had a plot for the family after they passed, a well managed field of headstones and familial dedications. They even had a place for the family horses, the mighty beasts grazing in a fenced off area. They had their own private road that took whoever traveled it up into the mountains and finally a rather large warehouse cozied up to the mountain's base. It seemed that was their destination.

As they entered, his senses went wild with the new smells. There was the sharp pricking of hay, mixed along with the nose ruffling odor of manure from multiple animals. But there was also the distinct scent of different barnyard stock. He could hear the soft shuffling shoes from horse feet and the clucks of chickens. He could smell the mixed food slop that pigs so adored and the markings of other canines. He glanced at her as Serilda called out for her mother and his gaze turned to the source of the answer. They walked right to the woman, stepping into a small but considerate horse pen. The Voidwalker’s mother was talking to a stable helper about the horse and its apparent shoe problem. They waited until she was done and then she walked over to officially greet them.

While she certainly resembled the rest of the family -- was there a mass of white haired people he didn't know about? -- she presented herself more… well, human. The rest of the family was garbed nicely and yet here she was, hands deep metaphorically in the muck that came from working with farm animals… though it certainly didn't show at the moment.

There was also her mannerisms. It may have been reined in comparatively to other humans but she was a far warmer presence than the rest of the family. She smiled and greeted her daughter with open, brave emotions and empathy, giving her a warm embrace. She was quick to introduce herself and even have the man a gentle, friendly hug in greeting rather than shaking his hand. Mythal managed to accept it without seizing up, a true test of his will. She was certainly the oddity in the family in a way… but it was a good difference. He could actually see where Seri's softer side came from. “Its nice to meet you, ma'am,” he said, smiling back at her.

She even treated Xiuhco to some affection, after a small test of her training. The hound had come far it seemed, though for the God Slayer he had missed more of her… wild days? He wasn't sure if that was the right word but he did chuckle as the hound was given permission to relax and practically assaulted the matriarch of the family with love.

Then the mother and daughter shared a… moment. They spoke about a thing that remained unnamed, making Mythal’s brow furrow a bit in curiosity. Serilda asked for a minute, which seemed to be a signal to be alone with Mythal. He glanced at Miriam as she said something about getting them ready and walked away and Mythal turned his attention back to Serilda. He could see the change immediately; gone was the confident woman he knew and now he could see the timid shyness that came when she was crouching upon something personal to her.

She was quick to explain that her reasoning for bringing him here wasn't entirely to spend time with him. In fact, his being here was because his gift required him to be. He simply stared at her as she fumbled with the confidence to explain what she meant. His gift wasn't some object or item but more an opportunity. He still remained quiet as she finally worked up the gumption and explained that Xiuhco's mother had recently had another litter of hounds and they were just now at the perfect age to bond with a master. And his present, it seemed, was the opportunity to take one for his own.

His breath seized in his throat and his eyes widened just a tad more. She'd brought him here, to her home, not only to meet her family but to have the chance to have a hound much like Xiuhco. A strange sensation worked into his chest, like a sharp pain or a pressure or an odd presence. There was a word for it he thought but he couldn't form it in his head. He was having a hard time focusing at all. Probably because he wasn't breathing.

He finally took a breath and attempted to talk, his words as caught as his kind. He gave his head a little shake, to right the gears back into their working placements. “Of course,” he squeaked out hoarsely. He cleared his throat. “No, of course I would. I would love that.” He couldn't help his hand reaching out to take hers, it was moving whether he wanted it to or not. He held it firm, squeezing it gently. “Thank you,”

"Character counts most when duty calls."

He let her fumble her way through her words without interrupting her, and when she finally got to revealing what her plans was Serilda noticed his eyes widen a bit. He just stared at her for a minute in shock, and she gave him the time he needed to process what she was offering him. When he did talk, his voice practically caught in his throat and he needed to clear it to speak again. He took her hand and reassured her that he definitely wanted the opportunity.

Serilda smiled, her eyes looking a bit more bright than they usually did as she squeezed his hand back. “You’re welcome,” she told him, genuinely relieved and joyful that he had agreed. “Come on. My mother will tell you what you need to know.” Pulling him forward a bit, she lead him off in the direction her mom had gone, their hands parting before they got within sight of the other woman.

Miriam was just stepping out of a small room in the barn, through a wooden door when they approached. Serilda gestured for Mythal to go ahead of her, hanging back. This wasn’t something she could join him on, as he’d soon find out. For now, she gave enough space for him to approach her mother at a distance Serilda wouldn’t really be able to hear the conversation.

When he was ready, Miriam said, “I’m sure you’re at least familiar with some of the behaviors of Star Wolves due to your exposure to Xiuhcoatl. Serilda will go over the details with you in time, but for now I’ll tell you the basics. Star Wolves are creatures of heightened intelligence and associated with fire and starlight. If properly bonded through time and training, they can achieve an empathic connection with their masters.”

“However, acquiring one is not as simple as with other pets, and training one properly is a taxing process both for you and the hound. The wolf must choose you, as much as you choose it. There is no prescribed method of being able to tell if you’re matched with a wolf… but you will know. For you and the hound alone, it will be undeniable -- should one choose you in return.” Her gray eyes held his for a moment to let her last statement sink in, wherein he would fully understand why Serilda had said it was only an opportunity. There was always a possibility that none of the pups would choose him as a companion.

Raising a hand, Miriam offered him a brown leather leash. “We will wait out here for you. If enough time has passed that I can reasonably assume a match wasn’t crafted, then I’ll let you out.” Despite the potential for all of this to go terribly wrong, the older woman did offer him a soft, encouraging smile. Then she opened the door to let him in, closing it behind him softly.

Inside, Mythal would find a fully grown mother wolf dozing in the corner on a soft pile of hay. Similarly to Xiuh, her coat was thick and predominantly black, though she had some spatterings of red and browns in her coat. In the rest of the rather spacious stall, four puppies played with one another. They were still very uncoordinated by their mannerisms, with oversized paws and ears. Each of them had a distinct colored coat that varied in pattern and color from the others. They also all had a different colored collar around their necks, with a little ring made for attaching the clip on the end of the leash Mythal was given. Everything was set up and ready for him…

...all he needed to do was interact with the pups and see what happened.

'Tis the Season Empty Re: 'Tis the Season

Post by Mythal Ragnos on 30th December 2018, 4:51 pm

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal was still struggling with the understanding of what was happening. He’d managed to center himself partially, at least enough to speak and show his thanks for her gift. His answered seemed to warm her, settling the nervousness that had temporarily overwhelmed her. She led him down the way and honestly all he could hear was his heart pounding. Why was his heart pounding so hard? He took slow gulps of air, practically forcing himself to calm down as they approached the door that her mother was stepping out of. By the time they came to a stop, the God Slayer had found some kind of foundation to settle on – albeit temporarily as well. It was more important he paid attention as the Voidwalker told him that Miriam was going to instruct him on the next steps. It was vital he had his wits about him.

And so he focused up as he came to a stop in front of the older Sinclair, only glancing back at Serilda for a moment before putting his full gaze on the matriarch of the family. She explained about the Star Wolves, the race that Xiuhco and his possible pup were, how they were intelligent creatures that were not easily tamed as pets. In fact, she explained, it would require a lot of focus and fortitude from both himself and the hound to reach a true sense of connection and that was even if one chose to bond with him. There was a very real possibility that he was going to walk in there and come out empty handed. While the thought was a sad one, Mythal easily accepted it. It wasn’t like it would be the first time he would be rejected.

He took the leash as it was handed to him, holding it tight as his eyes flicked between it and the woman. She urged him to step in alone and said she would only open the door once he had made a connection or after enough time had passed that she was sure one wasn’t going to happen. His grip on the collar tightened a little, a sign of his determination and he nodded to her, understanding what she said. He looked back at Serilda once more before the door opened and he stepped inside, disappearing within.

He got his first real sight of one of the Star Wolves at full growth, as the mother was resting in the back of the room. The four pups were playing in the center of the room, completely wrapped up in whatever game they were currently playing. He smiled at the sight of the small hounds, so care free and loving just being around one another. It only took one to notice him, the small pup giving the tiniest squeak of a bark at him. The other three turned to look, their tails wagging softly in hopes of seeing someone familiar. But it was Mythal, who was now getting down on his knees before them.

“Well aren’t you guys big,” he said softly, smiling at each one in turn. “Here I thought Xiuhco pretty,” he spoke with a gentle voice. They reacted to his words, their tails swishing back and forth but they never approached him. In fact, as they stood there, he could hear their little noses sniffing at the air to get his scent. He sighed a little, already having a bad feeling in his gut. His emotions were in flux and as such, so were his magical abilities. That meant a portion of his magical power was lit inside of him, if only a small spark. They’d be able to sense it out and when they did…

They didn’t run away, of course. It wasn’t like he smelled bad or rotten. But smelling his magic, it would feel… wrong. Like it didn’t belong in the world and frankly, it didn’t. The four pups held their ground, unwilling to move and their tails falling limp on their rears. Seconds ticked by like hours as he sat there in a kneeling position, already a bit down over the situation. Even if he had prepared himself for it, it still wasn’t the easiest pill to swallow. He was sure that Miriam would be opening the door any moment and he would have to walk out empty handed.

But maybe not. The first pup that had noticed him, after standing there like his siblings for a bit, gave off a small huff and trotted forward, his tail timidly wagging. He was on the smaller side, with fur as black as night that had white trimmings on the very ends of his hair near his legs, his jowls and his tail end. Mythal stayed perfectly still for a moment as the pup approached him, looking up at his face in curious wonder. Carefully the God Slayer put his hand down, splaying his fingers and turning it up. The hound paused for a moment to look over his hand before continuing forward, shoving his nose right against the pads of his fingers and sniffing him excitedly. After taking a full inventory of his fingers, the pup nudged his hand, asking for a quick pet. Mythal followed the order, running his fingers over the hound’s back gently. And then carefully, he brought the leash down and attached the hook to the pup’s collar. When it didn’t give out a howl of anger or fear, he stood up and finally allowed himself to breathe again.

He knocked on the door carefully and when it opened he would walk out, with the pup walking beside him, though a bit timidly.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

    “So.”

Miriam’s voice cut through the thick fog of emotions running rampant in Serilda’s head. The Voidwalker was extremely happy that Mythal had been interested in her gift, but once he was shut inside the room she was greeted with old worries that hadn’t plagued her for a while. Her mother must have noticed this, or perhaps it was other things she’d noticed.

Shaking herself from her reverie, Serilda looked at her mother with a curious expression. The woman nodded toward the door where Mythal was currently testing himself against the pups. “He’s cute,” she murmured innocently, keeping her voice down.

Serilda blushed profusely. “Yeah…” There was no point in denying what her mother was trying to get at. There was certainly an attraction between the two of them, and Miriam knew her daughter well enough to know when she had a fancy toward someone.

The woman smiled. “So how long has that been going on, then?”

“O-oh, it’s… it’s not really like that,” Serilda said. Her mother raised a brow, causing the girl to falter. “I mean.. It sort of is but… We’re just friends. We’ve been together a couple times, but we’re not in any kind of committed relationship.” It was difficult, if not more than a little embarrassing, to admit such things to her mother but Serilda wouldn’t lie about it. That would indicate some level of shame for how they were together, and the Voidwalker wasn’t ashamed of it. Plus, lying was beneath her as a noblewoman.

Still, the fact that her mother’s face was unreadable in light of the information was more than a little nerve wracking. “Hardly fitting behavior from an up and coming duchess… but I’m sure you are taking steps to protect yourself and considered such things before getting involved. You’re an adult, and I’m not going to chastise you. If anything, I’m glad you’re finally starting to put yourself back out there…”

Miriam voice became noticeably softer at her last comment. She knew the last few years had been difficult for Serilda, who’d had a difficult time picking herself back up and moving forward with her life after Hugo’s death. Like any parent, Miriam was concerned about her daughter sharing a bed with someone she wasn’t emotionally involved with, but Serilda had never been one to act without considering all the possible consequences, even when she was a child.

The woman smirked. “We’ll just maybe not tell your father.”

It wasn’t long after that when Mythal knocked and emerged from the room. Trailing timidly beside him was one of the hounds, a beautiful pup with crystal colors swirled into his black fur. Like that, all of Serilda’s pent up anxiety over the moment disappeared and she absolutely beamed at him with joy -- by far the biggest expression of happiness she’d ever expressed in the time they’d known one another.

Miriam stepped forward and knelt down next to the pup with a small smile on her own face. “Excellent match. Congratulations.” She gave the pup a quick pat, her way of saying goodbye as his primary caretaker. “I’ll make sure to have someone put some puppy pads and other necessities in the room you’re staying in. Don’t worry about bringing him inside the house. If he makes a mess somewhere, just let someone know and they’ll get it taken care of -- they’re used to it by now.”

She stood back to her feet and gave him one more smile before telling them, “It’s probably time for me to get into more appropriate attire. I’ll see you two back at the house.”

And with that, she walked off and left them alone. Serilda wasted no time in stepping up to Mythal and wrapping her arms around his neck in a firm hug, burying her face against his chest. “I’m so glad one of them picked you..” she whispered, doing her best to keep her emotions reigned in. Serilda held him for a long moment before finally stepping back and looking down at the little guy. “He’s going to be a handsome one.” She resisted the urge to lean down to greet the pup, knowing the only reason Miriam herself had done it was just cause the creature was already familiar with her. This one would have to wait a while before Serilda could really form any kind of relationship with it, as his bonding process with Mythal needed to take precedence.

“We’ll make some time in the near future to go over what you need to learn about training and bonding. For now, just spend time with him and decide what you want to name him. His name is the first thing he should learn, anyway.”

Post by Mythal Ragnos on 30th December 2018, 4:53 pm

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

If Mythal had been in a better state of mind, he would have been able to overhear the conversation that went on between Serilda and her mother. If his beating heart hadn’t been in his ears the entire time he was kneeling inside the room, a small part of him finding a glimmer of hope in his dark world, he would have overheard Serilda’s feelings about their… complicated friendship. It may have clarified some things for him, it may have swept away some of the denials in his head and heart or maybe it would have piled more on. Whatever the case, it didn’t really matter – chances were, Serilda wasn’t going to go ahead and mention it to him out of the blue.

He felt light as a feather as he stepped out from the room with the little pup beside him. Miriam met him with a smile, taking a moment to pat the hound in a farewell before explaining what came next in terms of supplies. It seemed that she already had plans put in place, telling him that all the needs he would require in the short term would be brought to his room. He was more than welcome to bring the pup inside and if he happened to have any accidents, the servants would be more than ready to clean up. “Thank you, ma’am,” he spoke up, managing to keep his voice even. He let his breath slowly leave his mouth as the matriarch expressed a need to go and get ready.

He was just beginning to inhale and speak to Serilda when she rushed forward and hugged him, nearly knocking him off his feet. He managed to both stay up and keep a hold of the leash that held the pup, who had jumped a little at her sudden movement. But his anxiety seemed to dwindle with the feeling of her body wrapped around his. He used his free arm to hug her back, relishing in the warmth of her form. “Yeah, I was a bit nervous too,” he admitted softly. He held her as long as she did before finally letting her step back. She smiled down at the pup but kept her distance, knowing more about his training than he did. She explained that they would go over more details about his training and bonding as time went on and he nodded. “Looks like you’ll be spendin’ a lot more time with me,” he teased with a smirk. “As for a name, I knew that the minute this little guy came up. Anyone brave enough to stand up to a large idiot like me has to have a name to match,” he said, bending down once more. He held his hand out for the pup again, the hound smelling it once more and then wagging his side at it in an a puppy sense of affection.

He smiled as he looked up at her. “What other name is there but the same idiot that did the same thing for me?” He looked back down at the pup. “Gren.”

"Character counts most when duty calls."

She hadn’t meant to scare the puppy, of course. Serilda had just been so thrilled that he’d bonded with one. They held each other for a long minute, both of them needing the physicality to ground themselves emotionally before stepping back. He teased her a little about having to spend more time with him, and she smirked at him. “Oh, I’m so bummed,” was the dry response. “Whatever shall I do?”

Mythal revealed then that he already had a name picked out for the little guy, and it happened to be the same name as his adoptive father. Serilda smiled down at the pair of them, her heart skipping several beats at the significance of the name and the emotions that brought her. “I think that’s a perfect name. Looks like you’re going to have to get a sidecar for your bike sooner than you expected.” Serilda smirked again. If they were ever to take his lacrimacycle to another job, the hounds wouldn’t fit in the space together.

Once they had themselves settled down a bit, they decided to head back inside. Serilda called out to Xiuh, who came running in after a few seconds. The older wolf looked down at her tiny brother with curiosity and interest, getting down on her belly and lowering her head so as to not be intimidating as she tried to smell Gren. Once their little introduction was over one way or another, the four of them made their way back up to the house.

Serilda’s siblings congratulated Mythal with small smiles and handshakes, happy for his match up with the wolf. At some point while they had been in the barn the final sister had arrived with her husband and their several children. Though the kids were off running around and playing with their cousins, Serilda introduced Mythal to the other sister whose name was Scarlet, as well as to her spouse Owen.

The group of them spent some time relaxing in the entertainment area, taking rounds playing pool while chatting and drinking. Serilda let Mythal know he was free to have whatever he wanted from the bar, which was fully stocked but currently unoccupied as the servants were finishing up dinner and preparing for their own celebration. She poured herself a glass of champagne and him whatever he expressed an interest in.

Soon enough, it was dinnertime. A servant came to fetch them, and they were all seated at the formal table in the hall, which had been prepared with the finest of dining ware from the real silverware to crystal glasses and cloth napkins. Byron sat at the head of the table, with Miriam to his right -- who had returned dressed up like a proper duchess -- and Serilda to his left. Mythal was placed beside Serilda, and the rest of the family lined the table accordingly. A few servants brought in the first round of plated food, setting it before everyone and refilling any drinks that needed it. Once that was done, Byron thanked them and dismissed them to be with their own families.

The food was exquisite. The meat was fresh from a pig that had been slaughtered, drained, and dressed the day before to result in a perfect holiday ham. There were fresh and cooked vegetables, homemade rolls straight from the ovens, mashed potatoes and gravy from scratch, dressings, and fruits. Whatever food had not been initially prepped on a plate for them was set on a mahogany buffet table on the side of the room for them to get seconds at their own leisure, next to several plates of different chocolates, pastries, and other sorts of desserts. Both wolves were offered bowls of chopped meat and gravy.

The exchanging of presents was shortly after dinner, and was a relatively low key event. Rather than sit and take turns with everyone watching people opening their gifts, the younger kids were allowed to dig right into theirs while the adults more or less did the same, but at a more dignified pace. There were a few gifts for Mythal beneath the tree as well from Serilda’s parents -- basic things he would need for Gren in the long term, such as bowls for food and water, training equipment, some toys, and even a couple informative books about the Star Wolf breed and tips on training them.

Once that was done, they all simply relaxed downstairs in the entertainment room with one another, drinking and socializing in a polite fashion. Mythal might be surprised to see that two or three of the Sinclairs drank enough to get a little tipsy -- including Miriam, who had found the bottle of wine Mythal had brought. Though they were all generally polite and disciplined, rather than overwhelming partiers, it was a relatively good time. Seasonal music played over a surround speaker system, the pool tables got good use, and the lacrimavision was playing a comedy and action flick.

Serilda wasn’t sure what time it was when people started filtering off to go to bed, though she was sure it was fairly late. As long as Mythal indicated he was enjoying himself and awake enough to engage, she would stay. But, once he seemed like he was ready to retire she’d give her own goodnights and walk with him to the second floor where his room was. Inside, he’d find that a bowl of water and a couple puppy pads had been set out in the bathroom.

Covering a yawn, she said, “I am definitely ready for bed. I think I may have had one more drink than I really needed…” Serilda smiled at the hounds, as Xiuh walked around and smelled everything with interest. Then, she looked at Mythal. “Did you have a good time?” she asked him quietly, not sure if the evening had been too much interaction for him or not.

Post by Mythal Ragnos on 30th December 2018, 4:58 pm

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal rolled his eyes as she gave her response back to him saying she would have to spend more time with him. The truly funny part was that it actually made him feel a lot better to hear her basically confirm that it wouldn’t bother her to be around him more. He fought back the smile as best he could, managing to keep an almost look of ambivalence. “Guess I’ll just need to find new ways to drive you crazy,” he pondered aloud, even taking a moment to tap his finger against his chin in thought.

The newly named Gren looked up at the two humans curiously, his head weaving back and forth to take them in evenly. He let out a tiny, puppy like wuff before he walked in a small circle, sniffing at the ground eagerly. This new room had such new smells! He had to take them all in. “Not wrong,” he said with a small laugh, looking at the hound investigating the floor. “After all, you’ll need somewhere to sit,” he gave the smirk right back to her in the form of a grin, his joke meaning that she’d be riding in the side car and the hounds would be riding on the bike.

It was time to head back inside, the holiday festivities were probably pretty close to starting. As they prepared to leave, the Voidwalker called out to her hound and around came Xiuhco after a moment or so. She came up laid down in front of Gren, her nose working to smell the new hound. The smaller pup, as eager and excited as ever, hustled his way over to her nose and smelled it eagerly, his curiosity far outweighing any fear he may have. Once he had taken in his much older sister’s scent, he gave out a small excited wuff and bounced around in front of her, indicating his excitement. A new friend and a new world? This was all so invigorating. And it seemed he would be at least half-way relaxed around the older Star Wolf.

When they were back inside, all of the siblings showed their appreciation over his newly acquired pet. Smiles, handshakes, words of encouragement rained down on the God Slayer and he took it all in turn, his anxieties squashed under several layers of confidence at the moment. Serilda’s other sister had arrived, Scarlet, along with her husband and Mythal was finally introduced to the entire Sinclair clan. After that, there was a lot of socializing and taking it easy in the entertainment area. Alcohol was picked up by the Sinclair siblings and Serilda offered him some from the fully equipped bar. He chose a simple bourbon for the time; anything heavier would have encouraged his body to binge. After that, he remained close to Serilda, finding himself a lot more confident if he was near her.

After some time, one of the servants came to indicate that it was finally dinner time. The group filtered out to the dining hall, where the table had been set with some of the most expensive looking kitchenware that Mythal had ever seen. The silverware was made of actual silver and the glasses filled with toasting wine and water was made of a thin but strong crystal. The God Slayer did his best to follow the proper seating, watching as each Sinclair took a pre-planned spot. It seemed like the open seat next to Serilda was his and so he slid into it carefully, making sure to follow whatever the Voidwalker did. Once they were all seated, the servants came out with the first round of food and drink refills, making sure everyone was properly topped off before they were released by Byron to go attend their own Christmas feast.

Mythal would never claim that food for a rich family tasted better than a poor one’s meal; that just wasn’t true. But there was something to be said for fresh pork in comparison to pork that had been salted and stored for several days. While the food that came from being on the lower scale of wealth was still satisfying, the God Slayer had to admit – there certainly was a benefit to being able to get everything made fresh. Mythal ate with all the mannerisms that he usually didn’t embody, doing his best to appear like a normal socialite at such events. He made sure to eat just enough to feel full but not without overstuffing – he didn’t want to give away that eating like this wasn’t his regular diet. He glanced over at Gren, happily chewing and tugging at the meat in his bowl, trying to eat like a much bigger hound than he was. It was the literal representation of adorable.

After everyone had eaten their fill, they all embarked to the sitting room that held the Christmas tree. Once there, they began the process of opening gifts. The kids went ham on their presents, compiling their gifts in corners and tearing open the wrapping paper like the little devils they were. The adults took their gifts in turn and opened them with a bit more control, taking the time to properly look over and enjoy what they had been given. Mythal was honestly surprised he had received any gifts at all and yet there they were, sitting under the tree for him. They were supplies he would need for taking care of Gren but they were still meaningful all the same. He thanked each one of them, an overwhelming sensation filling his body that he didn’t quite understand.

The night winded down with more relaxing and socializing in the entertainment room. Now that the niceties were done, it seemed a few of the Sinclairs were more than happy to down far more alcohol than he expected. They weren’t quite the boozers that one might find in a bar but they drank their fill and then some. It made them looser and a lot sillier, which was amusing to see among the more polite and disciplined echelon of families. It was… an all-around good time. He wasn’t sure how late it was when he started to feel the fogginess of exhaustion, his guest bed calling to him. He excused himself to the last members of the family, saying that it seemed he had finally run out of energy.

Serilda came with him upstairs as he entered the room, finding a few of the puppy products already set up. Gren was tired too; he was moving far slower than he had been. There were a few times he had found his hound curled up near his feet, dozing off to try and get some energy back. But now in here, he was more than welcome to sleep the night away. He summoned one last bout of energy to leap onto the bed and examine it, sniffing away at the blankets. And then he curled up on the end of it and returned to sleep, finally happy to have some alone time. “It was kind of funny to see you havin’ more than one drink as it was,” he admitted with a wicked smirk, teasing her. But as she turned to him, asking him if he had a good time, his smile softened into something more genuine. “Yeah, I did,” he said quietly, nodding. “You know, I’m… not used to being around people all that much. Especially people of the richer variety. And yeah, it was a bit odd here and there but… they’re good people. I’m glad I came today. It was… Thank you for invitin’ me, Seri. I know, looking back, I would have regretted not going if I had turned it down.” He chuckled a little. “Not like I’d turn anythin’ down you ask of me,” he added, the words coming out before he could even properly process them.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Serilda was a bit impressed that Gren had managed to get his little body up on top of the bed to go to sleep. He really was the most precious little thing. It reminded her of when Xiuh had been that small, which really hadn’t been so long ago.

Mythal teased her about her own drinking habits that night and she smirked at him impishly. “Believe it or not, I am capable of having a little fun,” Serilda teased. Her expression softened with his though when he admitted that he’d enjoyed his time there. He explained that it definitely wasn’t anything he was used to, which Serilda assumed based on what she knew of him, but he honestly felt if he hadn’t come he’d have regretted it, and not just because of her gift.

“Careful. I might take you up on that.” She teased him a bit at his last comment, though the tone of her voice was equally as soft as his. Serilda smiled at him, eyes lingering on his for a moment as a wave of emotion washed over them. She dropped her head a bit. Her happy expression remained, though it had taken on a bit of a somber quality to it. “I really am glad that you matched with one…”

Looking back over at the sleeping pup again, Serilda told him, “I was worried. The only other person I’d ever tried to pair with a hound was Hugo and though we tried across several litters, none of them ever picked him. He never complained about it, but I know it bothered him. After a few tries, he finally gave up and told me he didn’t have it in him to keep trying anymore.”

It really meant a lot to her that Gren had chosen him. The constant rejections with Hugo had been just as hard on her, and by trying to gift Mythal with a wolf she had opened herself to the possibility of feeling that disappointment in herself again, in failing to bring companionship to those she cared for. Serilda didn’t say as much, of course.

She looked back up at the man, taking his hand in hers. “Star Wolves are very selective about the people they choose to bond with. You should be proud. I know I am. The training process is… hard. Physically, emotionally.” Xiuh, sensing the fluctuating emotions coming from her mistress, came over and sat next to her feet. The hound leaned against her legs affectionately, looking up with a big lopsided smile until Serilda scratched her behind the ears. “It hurts, sometimes… but it’s absolutely worth it, isn’t it girl?”

Post by Mythal Ragnos on 30th December 2018, 5:02 pm

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

“Oh are you?” He asked, feigning surprise. He did his best to look absolutely shocked by the news, though by now he definitely knew she was more than capable of loosening up. Even joking about it was a way of her loosening up. He held the impish grin for a few moments longer before he broke into his little speech, to which she teased him about taking up his offer. He chuckled, scratching his jaw idly. He couldn’t really deny the sentiment, as he had already said it. Plus there was the sole factor that it was true – she could ask him most anything at this point and he’d probably go along with it, just for her sake. The thought filled him with a warmth… and a coolness he couldn’t explain.

Luckily her own emotions were far more pressing, as her head dropped. She was still smiling but it was a deeply thoughtful smile, as sad thoughts came pressing to the forefront of her mind. He listened quietly as she explained that she had tried to pair her former husband with a hound as well, to no avail. Though he had eventually given up on trying, with the constant strain of trying to attract a pet wearing on him, it was clear the task had taken its toll on her. It was really right then that he understood just how deeply emotional it was to her to even offer this chance to him in the first place. His own anxieties and swirling emotions over the situation seemed nil in comparison to what she certainly had to go through.

She took his hand, urging him to understand just how big of a deal it was that he had been chosen in the first place. She was proud of it, proud of him and though the journey would be hard to bond the two together, she even said it would be worth it. Based on everything he had seen between her and Xiuhco, he knew it was. “Proud?” he asked softly, the word tasting strange on his tongue. “I don’t know if I’d ever use a word for myself. Not even sure lucky is right either. Ain’t nothin’ worked in my life for a long time and I gave up havin’ any faith in my abilities, my choices… even myself. But then I joined Fairy Tail and was forced to face myself for what I was. And I met you, who I saw as this… bright and wonderful light that removed the darkness from the world around you. It made the past easier to swallow. It made the future… something to look forward to.”

He gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “So I don’t care how tryin’ it is. I don’t care how physically and emotionally tired I get. The fact that I have an opportunity to build a strong bond, a positive bond, with Gren is worth it. I’ve suffered through far worse times – I know I can make it through somethin’ that will become a positive in my life. It’s why, in the end, I knew I had to keep workin’ with you. Because as much as we’ve had our spats, it’s a connection I truly care for and can’t give up on. You’re someone that I… cherish.”

Post by Serilda Sinclair on 30th December 2018, 5:04 pm

"Character counts most when duty calls."

It was hard to hear him talk so down about himself, but Serilda let him talk without interruption, knowing it was harder still for him to say such things aloud let alone to another person. He expressed how everything in his life had lead him to a full loss of faith in himself and anything he could have become. He was a man that had been destined for terrible things, escaped that terrible fate for a better life only to lose that one too, forced to the streets at a young age to fend for himself and keep a low profile before ultimately having to throw himself into a guild and put himself at risk just to survive.

He talked about how coming to Fairy Tail and meeting her were two things that had started to turn his life around. No matter how hard it was, he planned on working himself to the bone to make the relationship with Gren work out because he knew it would be worth the effort, just as it had been to push past the initial headbutting between the two of them. Mythal told her that he cherished her; the man that hated humanity and saw the worst in near about every person he met.

Well, that slammed her with an absolute wave of emotions. Lifting up both of her arms, she wrapped them around his shoulders and pulled herself against him in a hug. Serilda buried her face in the crook of his neck against his chest, just holding onto him and keeping him near, feeling his warmth. She wasn’t sure if it was his words, the alcohol, the way he looked at her, or a mixture of it all, but her heart was racing in a way that wasn’t entirely unfamiliar. But, she pushed that down to deal with in her own time.

“I could never tell you how to think about yourself,” she told him softly, her cheek rested against his shoulder. “But even with our spats, all you’ve ever done is make my life better. I’ve spent the last few years of my life going through motions and trying to adjust, trying to convince myself to keep going even though I couldn’t see a reason to. I joined Sabertooth to hone my magic skills, yes, but also because I just couldn’t stand being where I was anymore. Everything reminded me of what I had lost, and in four years that got somewhat easier but never really went away. I had literally lost my mind. There’s full pockets of time, months that I don’t remember any of following Hugo’s death. Journaling helped me start to process memories again, but I still felt like a walking shell.”

Serilda smiled softly against him. “As silly as it sounds, I think the fact that you got so thoroughly under my skin and managed to set me off a few times somehow… woke me up, again. I remember, now, how it feels to feel more than just numbness.” She pulled her head back to look him in the eyes. One of her hands reached up and cupped his cheek, caressing it softly with the pad of her thumb as she told him, “So even if you can’t have pride in yourself, or faith in your abilities or your choices, I do. I may not always understand every choice you make, or everything that you do, but I will always trust that you have a reason for it. Being in your life is a privilege, Mythal. One that I also hold dear. And as long as you want me to be here, I will be.”

She brushed some of his hair away from his face with a small smile, her ice blue eyes vivid and bright with emotions. They looked at him for what she had only intended to be a moment or two, but despite how much she wanted to Serilda just didn’t have it in her to pull away. This man, this beautiful man who dared to have a caring heart and open himself to hope even after everything he’d been through and experienced, had become so important to her and all she wanted was for him to understand that he wasn’t alone. That he had someone in his life again that cared for him for who he was, even the parts of him he saw as flaws or inconveniences.

The smile slowly melted off her face to be replaced with an emotion more sober and she leaned forward to place her lips on his. Her mouth lingered there softly, pulling away only to kiss him again with tender affection.

Post by Mythal Ragnos on 30th December 2018, 5:04 pm

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal found it much easier to talk about himself in the negative rather than the positive. After all, he had been created as a negative force meant to wipe this world clean. Even if he had resisted and fought against that role, it didn’t make him any less of an abomination. He wasn’t quiet about it and with Serilda, he was even more open about it. And that was mostly because she was the only person he trusted enough to open to, the only one he felt comfortable enough to show his emotional, metaphorical scars for what they were. He didn’t do it because he wanted her compassion or needed her comfort, he just wanted her to understand him more. It was by her own resolve that she chose to fight against his negativity and make it something… beautiful.

He accepted her hug without restraint, his own arms wrapping around her gently. He always felt better when she was close to him, the warmth of her body pressed against his and feeling her heart beat nearly against his own. Her heart was racing at the moment but so was his – a side effect of his words and the booze, most likely. Liquor had a funny way of making the body react. He listened to her as she spoke up finally, telling him about how he had made her life better. How her past few years had been a passive, nearly numb passage of time as she reasoned and dealt with her former husband’s death. She even told him that she had lost time shortly after he had passed, full months that were completely blank and gone from thought.

But he had woken her from her trance, by being such an overwhelming force. His insistence in driving her nerves, on pressing her patience, had broken through the wall of numbness and made her a person again. She made it sound so thorough and well thought out, words that he couldn’t put out though he felt the same way. Where she had been blank, he had been full of hatred and anger. And she had taken his blows, both verbal and physical, and softened them. She’d made him care. As she pulled back and held his face, his hands remained at her sides, his fingers gingerly holding onto her clothes, unwilling to let her get too far away. This woman that had opened his eyes to the beauty of the world trusted him, had faith in him and what he did. She would never claim to fully understand his methods but she would trust him all the same. And that she would remain by his side for as long as he wanted.

“Then I guess you’re stuck for good,” he said softly back to her, even as she reached up to brush the hair from his face. The truth of the matter was, he couldn’t see his life moving forward without her being there for him or him for her. He didn’t want her to leave; he needed her by his side, in battle and out of it. She was the one person he knew he could rely on, trust upon, and open up to, no matter what happened or occurred. His eyes held hers as long as she held his, unwilling to part from the invisible line that had been drawn between them. That thread only got closer as she leaned in and kissed him, the God Slayer returning it with the same affection and tenderness that he was capable of. It wasn’t the sexual kissing they had done before, it wasn’t the angry clashes of their mouths that had happened once or twice even. This was raw and emotional on a level he couldn’t quite comprehend and perhaps that was why it was so easy to melt into it, to pulled her gently closer so he could kiss her and make her understand just how important she was to him.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

    Stuck for good.

It was a sentiment she could get behind, one that practically made her knees weak, but she was too busy melting against him to say anything else. Serilda’s head was swimming like crazy and all she could do -- all she wanted to do -- was dive further into the haze and let it consume her. They kissed for some time, their emotions leading the charge with a slow simmering fire that soon threatened to boil over.

She managed to pry her lips away from his, resting her forehead on Mythal’s, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. Her body was shaking from how hard her heart was racing, though she kept herself snug against him. There was an open smile on her face, which she bit her lip to try and cover but couldn’t do it completely. “I need to be careful,” she teased, though the truth of her words were very much serious. “If I get started, I’m not sure I’ll be able to stop.”

More than anything, Serilda wished they were literally anywhere other than her parents’ house in that moment. Her mind was fighting for dominance against the wishes of her body and winning, but only barely. She brushed her nose affectionately against his, opening her eyes again to look at him. “But maybe tomorrow after we leave we can stop at your place… or you can just come with me to mine… and I can make it up to you.” Her smile took on a look as suggestive as her tone, as she referenced back to the joke he’d made earlier that day on the train.

She kissed him again gently, this time making sure she was in a little better control of herself, pulling back before she could get too carried away. Once again, her hand came up and caressed his cheek as she smiled at him. “I should probably go to bed,” Serilda told him reluctantly, not wanting to leave but knowing that if she didn’t they might both find themselves in a troublesome situation. “Do you need anything..?” She wanted to make sure he had everything he’d need to be settled in for the night before taking her leave, since the servants wouldn’t be back to help him find his way until late tomorrow morning.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

He hadn’t intended the kissing to go any farther than that. But with everything that had happened, everything that had gone through their heads. Her lips and her body pressed against him felt so right, so good, that it actually started to become a bit heated. Their lips moved with a bit more enthusiasm, their hands pulled on one another a bit tighter. There was a passionate flame beginning to mount and it was thanks to Serilda it didn’t explode into a wildfire. She pulled away, separating herself from him but only enough to lay her head against his. He took a shuddering breath in, trying to force his heart and his body to relax. She was right of course – they weren’t in a place that was appropriate to do such things. “Yeah…” he agreed, nodding softly.

She brushed her nose against him, a warm and empathic sign of affection. She hinted that on their way home tomorrow they could stop off at his place or go to hers and she could make up the difference to him then. “Well, I haven’t seen your place yet. Though we haven’t broken my bed in yet…” he said with a wicked grin, more than agreeing to her terms. They’d have to figure out the details to where they were going later. He kissed her back gently, enough to quell the fire at least for now.

It must have been late now and they both needed to go to bed. She asked if he needed anything and he had to literally fight saying ‘you’; knowing full well if he did, she would probably melt right back into his arms. As much as he wanted that, he knew better. “I’m good,” he said, giving her hand a squeeze before he finally let it drop. “Only thing I need is for you to come and wake me in the mornin’. At least then I can pretend we slept in the same bed,” he said with a genuine, emotional smile.

But before he could let her leave, he realized he had forgotten something. “In all this mess, I completely forgot,” he said, snapping his fingers and releasing her for a quick moment. He walked over to the bed and practically tore open his bag, pulling the zipper open hastily and reaching inside. He scrounged about for a moment before he found what he was looking for, dragging it up and out. He walked back over to her and lifted her hand gently before he placed in it a… key.

“To my house,” he said quietly, his words wavering a bit. “I wanted you to know that whenever you want to come over, you could come in without havin’ to knock or nothin’. That you could treat it… like your own home.” It was a massive step for the God Slayer, who never let anyone into his life prior to this. She had wormed her way deep into mind and soul prior to this but now he was openly welcoming her to his home, saying she could come and go to his own place of sanctuary at her leisure.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Luckily, he didn’t try to press her after she pulled away. Honestly, if he’d made any kind of indication that he wanted to continue and just risk being caught, Serilda honestly wasn’t sure she’d have said no. But, her suggestion that they simply pick those thoughts up tomorrow after they were in a more appropriate setting was well received. They’d figure out the details on the train ride home, she was sure.

They kissed again, and he assured her he had everything he needed. Though he followed it up with a desire for her to come and wake him in the morning so he’d at least wake up to her. She smiled at him softly. “I think I can manage that. Your room is almost right below mine, so I can probably sneak through pretty easily without anyone taking notice.”

She was about to say her final goodnights when enlightenment struck him, and he told her he’d forgotten something. Parting from her for a moment, Serilda watched as he moved over to his bag on the other side of the room and dug through it, searching for something. Whatever it was was small, as when he found it and joined her again it was hidden in his palm. She wouldn’t have to wait long to find out what it was, however. Lifting up her hand, he placed a key in on it. It was a spare for his house, he told her. He wanted her to have it, and to treat his place like a second home where she could come and go as she pleased rather than just being an occasional guests.

Her breath caught in her throat, and she was stunned to speechlessness as she stared at the small metal object. It did not go over her head how big this was for him, nor what it meant in terms of how deeply he trusted her and enjoyed her company. “Mythal…” she finally said, her shaking voice barely a whisper. If her heart hadn’t been on overdrive before, it certainly was now. “This is…” Serilda started to talk, but didn’t have the words. Out of all the things she imagined he might give her as a Christmas gift, this had never even occurred to her as a possibility.

She looked up at him. “Are you sure..?”

Presuming that he assured her this was, indeed, what he wanted to give her, Mythal would find himself at the receiving end of another hug, this one more firm than the last. “Thank you,” she whispered, her hand clutching tightly around the key like it had been crafted out of sapphires. Honestly, she didn’t know what else to say -- but with him, often times, it seemed that saying nothing was usually the right answer.

Serilda kissed him again deeply, still managing to keep a reign on her emotions enough to not jump him on the spot. When she pulled back, there was an expression of joy so deep on her face that her eyes actually seemed a little glazed like she was a bit teary eyed from the exchange. She managed to blink it back. Giving him a proper farewell so they could both get some sleep -- and thanking him again -- Serilda gave him one last kiss before leaving with Xiuhcoatl at her feet.

The whole walk back to her room, she felt like she was walking on air. She managed to get back to her room and shut the door behind her before finally letting her emotions to the surface. The woman clutched the key to her chest with one hand, wiping away a stray tear with the other. She smiled openly to herself. Never had she thought her relationship with Mythal would reach a point like this, given how stubborn they both were and the opposite backgrounds they came from. They were different in almost every way, but somehow all that did was make them stronger together.

She knew she loved him. Truthfully, Serilda had been toying with that knowledge actively for a little while but wasn’t sure if it was just hormones or not. She hadn’t been with anyone like this in years, and wanted to be certain of what she was actually feeling before admitting it even to herself. There were several times that she’d wanted to say it only moments ago, and kept herself from doing so. They weren’t in any sort of committed relationship, and while she knew that Mythal cared for her greatly she wasn’t really sure if either of them were ready to take that kind of step with each other.

But it didn’t really matter anyway, did it? He told her he wanted her to be in his life the rest of his life, and they already had each other even if they weren’t officially dating in any capacity or telling others about the full nature and depth of their relationship. That was fine with her. She didn’t need to display it, and she certainly didn’t need to rush it. She knew how she felt, and for now that was enough for her.

Smiling down at the item and biting her lip softly, she pulled her own keys out of her purse and fixed the item on the ring next to her own. Then, she set them back inside the bag, changed into her nightgown, and crawled into bed. Xiuh hopped up and snuggled her close, radiating from the strong positive emotions her mistress was feeling. It wouldn’t take Serilda long to fall asleep, and she would be smiling as she did.
