Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 10th December 2018, 6:03 pm

Wearing a blue t-shirt and black skirt with bike shorts underneath and white tennis shoes, Victoria also wore her webbing gear from the Night of Eternal Darkness incident. She had placed food, bottled water, and basic first aid items inside of its pockets. Without Seth around, Victoria would have to tend to her own well-being. She also carried an empty glass jar because one never knew whenever they needed to collect something like drinking water. She strolled into Hargeon Town just after the sun went down.

She was here on behalf of a wealthy collector who had something of great value stolen from him after an attack on the town by a large sea creature. He was willing to pay dearly to get it back. Victoria was tired of beating up bandits and shooting zombies, so she took the job for the challenge in order to boost Sabertooth's reputation and stay true to its mission. Bringing down actual demons would be a big boost to Sabertooth's reputation... and lucrative for Victoria too. With both motives in mind, she met the man outside a door leading to Hargeon's underground.

The metal door was located in an alcove that looked like it had recently been unearthed. Victoria was about to enter when a male voice spoke to her. The brunette turned and faced its source.

"Are you the Sabertooth mage named Victoria Sheridan?" The bespectacled man asked. He was a thin, balding man wearing a gray business suit with a red tie. By his side was a quartet of bodyguards dressed in black suits.

"Yes." Victoria said while presenting the job notice to the man. He took it, looked it over, and nodded. He returned the notice to her and began speaking.

"A thief took a rather valuable item from me and fled to the underground. I want it back." He reiterated to her in no uncertain terms.

"OK. What am I after?" Victoria asked the client.

"A book on demons. I bought it at an auction thirty years ago and kept it until the sea creature's attack a few years ago. I hastily evacuated the town to avoid getting killed. Some man entered my house while I was gone and stole my book." He answered plainly. Victoria was impressed with his honesty. She could respect a client who was upfront about what he wanted.

"I must warn you... this job can be dangerous. The underground is rumored to be filled with humans who have fallen under the sway of demons. I have also heard that there are worse things down there than human puppets. Rumor says that there are real demons down there, real one straight from the underworld." The man warned her. Victoria was slightly alarmed, but she also wanted the challenge. If she could pull this off, Sabertooth would add another success to its reputation as defenders of the realm.

"I'll do it." Victoria replied. The man clasped his hands together in happiness. She looked into his eyes.

"Splendid. Bring the book back to me and I will reward you well." He said to her. Victoria walked to the metal door leading to the underground. She grabbed the handle with both hands and pulled it open.

"Do be careful down there." He said to her before the door closed.

Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 11th December 2018, 11:33 pm

    -In the underground-

Victoria walked along the underground path while looking out for demons or their human puppets. It was a strange and marvelous place. It had a lot of glowing crystals that provided light to see by as well as bioluminescent plants. There were also dark figures that kept darting in and out of her vision. They were too fast to actually see, but she knew that they were there. Maybe that was their intent all along... to let visitors know that they were being watched at all times.

Victoria spotted a humanoid figure running towards her. She aimed a Hand Cannon and prepared to fight until she saw that he was a haggard-looking homeless man with three parallel scratches caked in dried blood on his left cheek. She lowered her hands when she saw that he was not a threat. He dropped to his knees in exhaustion.

"Help me kid! There's something down there!" He pleaded.

"What do you mean? What's down there?" Victoria asked.

"There's some bad shit down there, kid! Tall, ugly, muscular things taller than you and me put together! They're everywhere! You can't see them until it's too late!" He frantically warned her. Victoria did not think he was drunk or had a substance abuse problem. She had seen some weird things of her own during her time as a mage, so the brunette was willing to go on faith.

"Slow down, Mister. Tell me what happened." Victoria attempted to calm the frantic man down. He took a deep breath and steadied himself.

"Some friends and I went down there. We heard about this place and went looking for valuables to sell. Collectors will pay good Jewels for artifacts. Everything was fine until we passed that glowing stream over there." He explained while pointing a finger at the running water beside them, which was glowing. Victoria had never seen glowing water before. It was definitely not run-of-the-mill water.

"Once we found the water's source, we kept going. Once we entered the cave those things came after us. Our pocketknives were no good... we might as well have been waving dinner forks at them. Stan and Steve never had a chance. Those things popped up right behind them and cut their heads off in one swing with their claws!" The man recounted. Victoria did not like the sound of that. For a moment she wondered if her own magical firepower would be enough to fend them off.

"Thanks Mister. You'd better get outta here. I'll handle them." Victoria said to him. He looked into her eyes.

"You some kinda hunter, kid?" He asked incredulously.

"When there's a need to be one." Victoria answered calmly. He looked like he did not entirely buy the attempt to sound tough.

"I bet you're a treasure hunter!" He theorized.

"Yeah. A collector sent me to retrieve an item of his that was stolen a few years ago. He said that it's hidden somewhere in this place." Victoria replied.

"Look, kid. I'm not gonna tell you what to do. You're obviously a mage and this isn't your first rodeo. But lemme tell you this. Watch your back down there!" The man emphatically stated. Victoria handed him a small bag of 1,000 Jewels as a way to buy safety for a night or two. He gratefully clutched the bag.

"Thanks kid. I'm getting outta here. I'd rather take my chances on the streets than down here!" He stated before hobbling away. Victoria watched until the man had exited the place, then turned back to face the glowing water. She had a lot to think about.

Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 16th December 2018, 12:11 am

Victoria decided to press on into the underground. Recalling the man's words, Victoria walked up to the stream of glowing water, then turned left and followed it. She walked alongside it until she faced a point where seven other streams flowed next to each other. The curious thing was that all the streams were equidistant from one another.

She took a moment to look at the meeting point of the streams. It was deep inside into the underground, where the man said that his partners met their ends at the hands of the beasts who lurked further within. Victoria had no choice but to press onward because her client was counting on her. Sabertooth was counting on her.

Victoria walked under the blue glow of crystals that studded the walls and the glow of bio-luminescent plants that were growing in the dirt. The presence of the soft blue light compensated for her forgetting to bring her flashlight again. Victoria really needed to remember to bring it next time she went delving into underground locations. She was halfway down the stream when she spotted the shadows the man warned her about. They were too fast to spot for certain, but they were definitely there.

Victoria stopped when she found the stream formed by the convergence of all the other streams. It was a shallow stream, but it was wide to compensate for its lack of depth. The new "super-stream" led further underground into a cave system that was ominously dark. More shadows flickered just out of the corner of her eye the closer she got to the cave system. That was not good.

The mage took a moment to admire the stream before her. The sparkling water was oddly beautiful. When combined with the soft blue light sources, the sight of the stream was otherworldly, like something out of a fairy tale or a movie. She had never seen anything like it in her life. Victoria walked along admiring the water until she stood at the mouth of the cave.

The brunette had to focus now because she was heading into enemy territory. Once she entered the cave she would be on their turf. Victoria took a deep breath and walked in with her shotgun ready for action. It would be perfect for close-range fighting since it would be quick, point-and-shoot fighting instead of a long-range shootout.

Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 20th December 2018, 12:30 am

Victoria paused and looked behind her. She saw shadows flitting by at unnatural speed. Whatever occupied the underground was onto her now. Victoria walked slowly, keeping an eye out for trouble and her ears listening for unwanted company. She slowly walked deeper underground with only crystal and plant light for company.

Victoria noticed that as she went deeper, the cave itself got larger and larger. Whatever dug the tunnels must have been tall, taller than any human being. She had no idea what could have dug the tunnels and part of her was afraid to imagine what did dig them. At any rate, Victoria soon encountered more pressing concerns to deal with, namely a giant something that suddenly barred her path.

It was thirty feet tall with ten-foot wide shoulders and was proportionate for a creature of its size. Its species name did not immediately come to mind, but it was definitely not natural. Very few things in nature grew to be thirty feet tall. They also did not have tree trunk-sized arms and legs. It swiped at the mage with sharp claws and Victoria ducked just in time to avoid an unwanted haircut.

She got back to her feet and sprinted to put some distance between her and the giant. If she got hit by those claws, she would be cut to ribbons. Victoria hefted her shotgun to her hip and fired a Solid Slug that hit it in the left knee. Undeterred by the hit to its knee, it lumbered towards her and swiped with its claws, hitting empty air because the mage jumped backwards.

However, Victoria had slipped upon landing and ended up on her backside. She was sitting as the giant charged at her. Thinking on her feet, she created a Flashbang and held it until the creature was near, then lobbed the projectile into its face and buried her face in the dirt. The Flashbang detonated, blinding the creature and giving Victoria an opening in which to bring in more firepower.

Victoria put aside the shotgun and used her Hand Cannon to hit the creature squarely in the head... its head was a target that was hard to miss. It went down with a single shot, its body turning to ash as it faded away. That was the first of them, but it would hardly be the last encounter. She was sure that more of its kind were waiting for her in the shadows deeper in the cave. Victoria picked up her shotgun and resumed her journey into the cave system.

Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 21st December 2018, 3:40 pm

Victoria pressed deeper into the underground system, paying attention to the shadows that darted about just out of sight. Crystals and plants still lit the way, which was a welcome feature. The glowing water flowed nearby, which was oddly comforting to her. Victoria had never been very far underground before... well, except for that strange cave adventure in Mysterious Canyon back in what seemed like a lifetime ago. That adventure was more than a little unsettling because she had very real fears of getting lost in the cave and never finding daylight again.

Unlike the winding cave in Mysterious Canyon, Hargeon's newly discovered cave system had only one path to follow, which was comforting to Victoria. There was only one way in and one way out. Getting lost would be rather hard to accomplish. The mage kept going until she spotted two decapitated human bodies with blood splashed on the ground where their heads used to be. Victoria leaned down and briefly examined the bodies.

They belonged to two homeless men who were dressed in thin, tattered clothing. Clutched in their hands were nondescript pocketknives that had the blades extended. Judging from the black substance coating the blades, they had been used in a vain attempt to fend off the denizens of the underground. Their severed heads were nowhere to be seen, which was probably for the best. The final detail was that the men looked emaciated... she recalled the homeless man she met at the entrance saying that he and his friends were exploring the underground to find artifacts to sell for food money.

The sight of the corpses was a grim reminder of how quickly one's life could be ended. Victoria ran the risk of getting killed every time she took a job. She tended to take the dangerous jobs, jobs which only increased the chances of her meeting a premature end. The brunette did not expect to live long anyway, so each day that she lived to see the end of was a bonus. Victoria would keep being a mage for as long as she could because the Jewel payday from dangerous work was typically proportionate to the risks she took, a perk of the mage lifestyle that kept her coming back for more.

Since there was nothing that could be done for the hapless men, she stood up and looked around in case any more of the underground's denizens wanted to fight. No new threats presented themselves, so Victoria faced forward and started walking again. She had an item to retrieve for her client.

Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 24th December 2018, 7:08 pm

Victoria continued her lonely underground trek to the accompaniment of the flowing water. If she were not in the middle of the underground in half-darkness with the shadows of unknown creatures everywhere, the walk would be almost relaxing. Her casual stroll was soon interrupted by another tall, dark evil-looking thing that had the bad sense to get in her way. Victoria dispelled her shotgun and called upon her rocket launcher. It was time to try out her new weapon.

Victoria dropped to a knee, steadied the launcher on her shoulder, and fired a Bunker Buster shot which was a rocket with a gray tip. The projectile slammed into the creature's chest and blew a gaping hole in it. The creature felt its chest, looked at the wound and then at her, then toppled over and turned to ashes. Victoria was impressed by the rocket launcher's power and speed.

"Damn." Victoria whispered almost reverently. Her new weapon boasted a lot of firepower in a small package. That trait made the rocket launcher a perfect addition to the brunette's arsenal. Her previous weapons were good for their purpose, but none of them had the punch to seriously threaten armored targets. Her lengthy battle with the syndicate helicopter in Rose Garden brought that glaring deficiency into the spotlight.

The rocket launcher was a welcome addition because she could now do serious damage to hardened targets without weighing herself down too much. The only problem was the backblast. She had to be careful because the exhaust from the rocket went backwards, which could hurt any allies who stood behind her, but that problem could be easily avoided with a little communication. Since Victoria was alone on this job, harming friendlies would not be a concern.

Victoria stood up, dusted herself off, and continued on her way none the worse for wear.

Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 27th December 2018, 3:35 pm

Victoria's walk was getting to be quite monotonous. It was the same old crystals and same old plants everywhere she looked with no variation in placement or formations. What was once enchanting scenery was now getting old fast. She wondered when she would reach the end of the tunnel so that she could find what she was hired to find. If it was an evil trick to bore the mage into complacency, it was certainly working.

Everything looked the same and that kind of complacency could be dangerous. In unknown territory, losing focus could lead to disaster. The brunette tried to snap out of it, but nothing was working. Everything still looked the same. Victoria kept walking and trying to get her focus back because an enemy could be lurking just around the bend.

Part of the brunette welcomed enemy contact because nothing restored focus like a life-or-death fight. She rounded a gentle right bend in the tunnel to find nothing but more crystals and more plants to light the way. At least the stream flowing nearby was still interesting to look at. Victoria wondered what made the water sparkle like it did. There was probably some complex scientific explanation that she could not begin to understand even if she had a university professor stand there and explain it to her with diagrams.

Victoria's mind began to wander to something that had been on her mind since taking the job. What was so important that thieves would risk going into town during a giant monster attack to steal it? Was it a book of demonic lore? Was it an artifact weapon of incredible magic power? Or was it a very rare jewel that was worth more than most mages could count to?

She did not know, but she really wanted to find out. Something had to be worth all the risk for the thieves to steal. Victoria would find her answer at the end of the tunnel, but the trick was determining exactly where the end of the tunnel was. Everything looked the same.

The mage walked down a long stretch of tunnel marked by crystals and plants while trying desperately to focus on her surroundings. She should have brought some carbonated drinks. She could use a non-alcoholic pick-me-up right about now. Even with proper athletic shoes on, all the walking was killing her legs and feet. Having finally reached her limit, the tired brunette sat down in the middle of the tunnel and stretched her legs.

Why was this tunnel so long and how deep into the earth did it go? She did not know. She stretched her legs in front of her and tried to touch her toes, partially to fight cramping and partially to alleviate boredom. It was a sad day when touching her toes was more exciting than a job she was working. The brunette finally touched her toes and held the stretch to a count of ten, then released it. She sat around for a few minutes more before standing up and brushing the dirt off of her legs and backside.

Now that she was halfway focused again, Victoria had the resolve needed to put one foot in front of the other and keep going until the job was finished. She reached the end of the length of tunnel and was confronted by a tall enemy holding a sword. Finally!

"Yeah!" Victoria cheered. She had been waiting quite awhile for this. The job was getting exciting again!

Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 27th December 2018, 7:34 pm

With an enemy to fight, Victoria was finally refocused. She formed her hands into a gun and held them out in front of her, firing a Hand Cannon shot that hit the enemy in the chest and made it flinch. It recovered from the shot and glared at her, then brandished its sword and charged at her at a speed greater than her own. Moments later Victoria heard the whispering of hundreds of thousands of voices whispering to her at once. They were distracting her with whispers about as many subjects as there were voices.

One subject that came up frequently was joining with the demons to gain more power. If Victoria would only forsake humanity and cast her lot with them, she could gain more magical power than she ever dreamed about. With that power, she could easily take revenge on the Corlones and take over their "business" for herself, making more Jewels than the King of Earthland had in the royal vault.

Another subject that came up was the subject of Black Rose. If she would join the demons, she could use her newfound power to resurrect the guild with herself as its new Guild Master. She could attract a new guild's worth of mages to fill the ranks and form an army to do her bidding.

Victoria was trying to ignore the voices because what they whispered was impossible. Demons were infamous tricksters who filled the pages of numerous books of folklore with tales of why they should never be bargained with. Some liked to twist the wording of wishes to their benefit so that they were the only ones who gained anything from the wish. Others liked to grant the wish but make it come true in the worst way possible for the wisher, like granting immortality but then getting the wisher sentenced to life in prison. Victoria was not going to bargain with any infernal entities because she would earn what she wanted, not take shortcuts that would cost her her soul.

She was forcibly diverted from that line of thought by the foe slamming into her with its shoulder. She was catapulted into the air and landed on the dirt, becoming easy prey for the incoming enemy. It sped towards her and stabbed down with its sword, narrowly missing Victoria's back as she rolled out of the way just in time. She scrambled up and raised a hand to fire a Derringer shot, but the enemy used its superior speed to dodge the attack and hit her in the stomach with the flat of its blade, making her double over. It raised its hands above its head for a decapitating strike, but the mage fired a Disorienting Mini-Crossbow bolt that hit the creature in the chest.

The creature's eyes met hers before wobbling. It staggered about and swung its sword in wild one-handed swings as it attempted to kill her. Victoria dodged the swings and called upon her rocket launcher to end the fight before the disoriented enemy connected with a lucky sword swing. Victoria dropped to a knee and aimed the rocket launcher at its chest as the whispering began anew. The ceaseless whispering was starting to throw off her aim as her shoulder wobbled.

The mage could hear more whispered promises of how all she desired would be for the asking if she would bend the knee to new infernal patrons. She would be given the location of Izayuki, Astrid Foss, and the other mages she had lost contact with when Black Rose was disbanded. She would be given more Jewels than she could ever hope to spend. They even offered to help her find and free her captured childhood friends. Victoria shook the voices out of her head... she would get all of those things on her own.

Victoria took careful aim at the disoriented enemy and fired a Bunker Buster shot at its chest. The gray-tipped projectile made contact and detonated, knocking the beast down and making it drop its sword onto the dirt. Victoria aimed again and prepared to finish the job when more whispering started.

They could give her anything she wanted in exchange for service. Anything. There was no need to retrieve the item for the client. He was sending her to her death. He had already pledged himself to infernal patrons and was planning to offer her as a human sacrifice in exchange for a favor.

Victoria aimed at the creature's head as it rose to its knees. She fired another Bunker Buster and hit dead on, turning the enemy to ash before it hit the ground. The annoying whispering immediately stopped. Victoria dispelled the rocket launcher and dusted herself off, then started walking. There was a lot more tunnel to explore before she reached the end.

Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 28th December 2018, 11:25 pm

Victoria noticed something different on the otherwise monotonous walk through the tunnel. She heard a loud, repetitive noise that sounded like... drums. Drums, down here? What could be playing them and for what purpose? She would find out once she reached the end of the seemingly interminable tunnel.

She rounded another bend that led right and kept following the sparkling water. The tunnel was gradually starting to take a downward slant. Hopefully that meant that the end was near. Victoria followed it through long straightaways and through bends to the right. As she followed the tunnel the sound of drums began to gradually increase in volume.

During this stretch of the journey none of the enemies had appeared to confront the mage. That was strange, but that was a welcome break because she was still trying to get over the whispers that invaded her mind during the fight with the small but fast swordsman. The shadows that had persistently stalked her throughout the early parts of the tunnel were appearing less and less frequently. She wondered if them backing off was deliberate but saw something that soon proved her theory wrong. One of the smaller enemies holding a sword was barring the way.

Victoria formed her hands into a gun and fired a Hand Cannon shot that it dodged with its speed by stepping aside. It disappeared for a moment before reappearing in front and backhanding her, then fading away as the mage spun around and regained her footing. She tried to locate the elusive swordsman but saw nothing until it took a one-handed downward chop at her. She stepped back and avoided a chop that grazed her skirt and cut a small slit near her right leg.

"Damn it! I like this skirt!" Victoria complained to her attacker. It ignored her complaint and swung with the flat of the blade, striking her behind the left knee. She dropped to one knee and made her hands into a gun, then fired when it appeared in front of her for a backhand. It was hit in the stomach... it glared at the mage and faded away for another attack.

She brought out her shotgun since she was in for more point-and-shoot fighting. She had caught a glimpse of it and turned to aim. She fired from the hip and winged it in the left arm, but had not done any serious harm to the swordsman. She spun around and spotted it as it swung left to right in a horizontal swing. Victoria ducked to avoid losing her head and fired a Solid Slug, which hit its stomach and punched a hole in its body.

The swordsman shrugged off the hit and punched her in the face, then darted in for a downward stab. Its blade punched through the fabric of her shirt just above the right shoulder, pinning her to the ground. Victoria was about to fire at it when the whispering began again.

Give in. Fighting is useless. Life would be so much easier if she saw reason and made a pact. They would soon rise to take over Earthland. There was no need to be in their path when she could be at their side instead.

Victoria struggled to ignore the voices. The struggle arose not from what they were offering, but the fact that there were so many voices whispering the same thing all at once. She was not interested in making a deal for power or immortality. She was interested in finding their leader and sending him/it back to where he/it came from. In order to do that, she would have to defeat the enemy in front of her first.

Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 29th December 2018, 12:39 pm

Victoria was having a rough time during this fight. Every time she attempted to make a counterattack it moved just out of range as if to taunt her and rub the futility of fighting in her face. Then there was the nonstop whispering. The whispering was making the fight more difficult than it needed to be, but not every job would have pushovers for enemies. She would find a way to get even and shut the voices up.

A chance to strike back came when the swordsman pulled out its sword tried to pick her up by the shirt collar. She formed a Combat Knife and jammed the blade into its right forearm, making the enemy release its grip on her. It responded by kicking her in the stomach, sending her flying backwards and making her fling her shotgun beyond her reach. It kicked the weapon out of the way as it walked towards her clutching the sword in an underhand hold. It seemed confident that it was going to kill her with its next attack.

The end is near. She should submit while she still could. Submission would buy a new life. What was she waiting for? This was her chance to join the winning side and prosper.

Victoria aimed her hand at the head of the approaching enemy and fired a Derringer shot at its right eye. The magic bullet hit, making black blood erupt from the eye and the creature instinctively clap a hand over the wound. This was her best chance to finish the fight... if it recovered from the blinding, she might not get another. The brunette scrambled up, took a knee, and summoned the rocket launcher. The creature doubled its walking pace as Victoria aimed at its chest and waited for just the right moment.

When it took its hand off the wound, Victoria fired a Heat-Seeker rocket with a red tip to have a better chance of hitting it if it tried to use its speed to dart out of range. As it turned out, such a precaution would prove to be unnecessary. The projectile hit exactly where she aimed it, killing the creature upon impact. Its body turned to ash and the whispering immediately stopped, giving the mage a much-needed break from all the noise. Instead of getting up and moving on right away, she took a break.

Fighting two of those swordsmen in a row was taxing. The first fight was not terribly difficult, but the second fight was more challenging because the whispering was beginning to wear down her mind. Having to muffle the voices and fight something bent on killing her was a double dose of trouble that she did not need. She sat down and tried to focus again before moving on. Going from fight to fight with no break in between was not a good idea against these enemies.

She wondered how much more tunnel she had to go before she would reach the end. With the fighting over, she could hear the sound of drums again. It was like the drums were calling to her, calling her to keep going. Victoria ignored them. They could wait... her ears were ringing from the countless voices calling to her and promising her various rewards should she abandon her fight and join the infernal powers.

Victoria stretched her legs and took out a bottle of water to drink. She was going to have to pace herself if she wanted to be in good shape for whatever lay in wait at the end of the tunnel. She hoped that she could finish this job soon... her legs and feet were hurting.

Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 29th December 2018, 5:14 pm

After a fifteen-minute break, Victoria was ready to go again. She got up, dusted herself off, and put her half-full bottle of water away. She was ready to follow the tunnel to its end and see what was waiting for her. She also wanted to put an end to the infernal drumming because it was getting annoying. She started walking, going slowly to save energy for the final stretch.

The mage dutifully followed every bend, every twist, and every straightaway until the features of the tunnel finally began to change. Gone were the crystals and plants that previously provided light in the tunnel. In their place were torches lining the wall, their dancing flames giving an orange glow. The sound of drumming got louder and louder as the mage approached the end of the tunnel.

The composition of the tunnel changed too. Instead of dirt, the path was now made of stone. Victoria walked on the stone and kept a watch for any more enemies, but none of them saw fit to appear... yet. As she walked, the tunnel kept expanding until she finally entered a large chamber made of stone that was stocked with hundreds of things that could be best described as demons. There were hundreds of them packed into the raised "seating" that circled the area, which somewhat resembled an arena.

There were numerous smaller red-skinned demons playing the drums by beating them with sticks. The small demons with horns was the source of the constant pounding that had called to her earlier. Victoria's attention turned away from the demons to something placed on a pedestal on the opposite end of the arena. A careful look showed her that she had found the book she was after, but she would not be claiming it without a fight. Standing in the middle of the arena was a six-foot-tall being dressed in old-fashioned black combat robes with red trim and carrying a well-made sword with a black blade and a goat's head for a pommel.

Victoria walked towards him under the watchful eyes of hundreds of demons. The audience was chanting words in an unknown language and occasionally stomping their feet to generate more noise. She would have liked to shut them up, but there were more of those things than she could take on. She would be overwhelmed in a matter of seconds should she try to pick a fight with so many of them. She would just have to endure the constant noise.

The figure raised a hand for silence and it was granted. The imps stopped playing the drums and the other demons stopped chanting and stomping their feet. The figure then turned to her and walked towards her.

"Welcome to my domain, young mortal. You have bested all the guardians I have set before you and have entered my presence. You have done well to make it this far by yourself." The being complimented her. Victoria was not sure how to feel about being complimented by a demon. She would have to figure that out later because right now she had a question for him/it.

"Who are you?" Victoria asked, the sudden silence hurting her ears almost as much as the loud sounds from earlier did.

"Who am I? I have been called many names and have achieved many titles over the ages. Some call me He Who Dwells In Darkness. Others call me The Infernal Lord. My titles are numerous, but I will not bore you with them all, for they are too many to list." The being boasted. Victoria was not terribly impressed. It sensed that and opted to give a name that she could address him by, presumably one pronounceable by humans.

"You may call me... Zupazu." He finally gave a name.

"OK, Zupazu. Why did you have the thieves steal the book for you?" Victoria asked Zupazu. He laughed a deep laugh at her. Victoria frowned. Demon or not, no one was going to laugh at her.

"I did not steal it, mortal. I merely reclaimed what was mine to begin with." Zupazu answered indignantly. Victoria was surprised by that defense. Was what the voices said about her client already being in league with the infernal powers true?

"OK, go on." Victoria said to him.

"That is all you need to know about the book which I have reclaimed." He curtly cut off all discussion of the topic. Victoria frowned. Would it hurt the so-called Infernal Lord to at least tell her what the book did?

"Instead, in recognition of your prowess and bravery, I will offer you a bargain." He announced in a tone like he was doing her a favor. Victoria was wary of those words. Not another one of these "bargains."

"If you leave now, I, The Infernal Lord Zupazu, will permit you to leave my domain unharmed. I will also permit you to take a vial of water from my domain as proof of your deed." He offered to Victoria. Victoria seized upon this chance, but only to get an answer to a long-standing question.

"What's so special about the water?" Victoria asked him.

"The glowing water you have seen is called the Living Water. Should you take some in a container and pour it into the mouth of an individual who has recently died, it will bring them back to life." Zupazu answered. Victoria liked the sound of that. She could see how useful the water would be to a risk-taker like her.

"However, should you accept my offer, you forfeit the chance to regain the item your client has sent you to obtain. Think carefully and choose wisely. You have only one chance to walk away." Zupazu warned Victoria. She now had a choice to make... what would it be? Fight for the book or take the Living Water and walk away while the going was good?

Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 30th December 2018, 2:39 pm

Watched closely by both the crowd and by Zupazu, Victoria had a decision to make. If she left now, she could take the Living Water and leave unharmed by the Infernal Lord and his host. However, by leaving she forfeited the chance to take back the client's book. She had never backed out of a job to date, even when the going got tough. She did not want to disappoint Ryo by backing out now.

If Victoria turned down the chance to leave, doing so would commit her to a fight to the death because Zupazu would not let her leave unharmed. However, by defeating him she would be able to take back the client's book and possibly get a container of the Living Water. She would also have the satisfaction of not having backed out and disappointing the client and Ryo. She did not endure the boring walk through the tunnel just to turn around when she was so close to the goal. Zupazu looked bored.

"What is your decision, mortal?" Zupazu asked her.

Such bravado might end up getting her killed, but Victoria was not going to run. Zupazu would have to do more than rattle off meaningless titles and make fancy speeches to scare her away. She was going to stay and fight. Looking Zupazu right in the burning red eyes, Victoria announced her decision.

"I'm not going anywhere, Zupazu! I want that book and I' not leaving without it! Let's fight for it!" Victoria answered defiantly. Zupazu chuckled, then broke into a booming laugh. The audience took up the laugh.

"Then so be it! There will be no mercy! I, Zupazu, The Infernal Lord, will demonstrate to you the frailty of your flesh!" Zupazu bellowed. He bellowed something to the audience. The audience pumped their fists and began chanting in their language. Zupazu then turned to her and smiled.

The whispering began anew as Zupazu vanished from sight. Victoria attempted to find him, but she could not see him anywhere in the large arena. She felt a sudden impact from behind as she was knocked forward, landing on her hands and knees. Victoria spun around and fired a Hand Cannon, striking him in the chest. He laughed off the wound and thrust a palm forward, striking her in the chest and propelling her backwards. She slid across the floor and came to a stop on her back... the brunette struggled to catch her breath because the impact of the palm strike and landing on her back knocked the wind out of her.

Victoria looked for Zupazu and could not find him until he appeared in front of her. Suddenly she felt a powerful hand grip her by the hair and haul her to her feet. She felt breathing on her neck and smelled something like sulfur on his breath.

"You should have left while you could!" Zupazu taunted as his claws slowly raked down Victoria's stomach, cutting her shirt and her flesh. Victoria screamed as the audience roared in excitement. The drums started beating again, stirring the crowd's excitement even more. She was then flung forward, landing on her chest and bouncing once before stopping.

Victoria felt awful, but she had to keep fighting. She had committed to the fight and it was going to be finished one way or another. She stood up and faced him. He raised a hand and black flames engulfed it. The flames then shot forward in a cone, a spark reaching Victoria's skirt and setting the bottom part on fire.

Victoria quickly patted out the fire and was hit in the chest with another palm strike, She was launched backwards and landed painfully on her back. She got up and formed a Combat Knife just in time for Zupazu to appear in front of her and grab her by the hair, but this time she was ready. She plunged the knife into his arm, forcing him to release her. She landed on her feet , summoned her shotgun, and fired at his left leg with a round of Big Shot.

Fighting is useless. Zupazu will win. You should have taken the bargain.

The whispering was starting to break through to her. Victoria shoved it aside and fired another round of buckshot into his leg, causing The Infernal Lord to bellow in pain. He roared and slashed her across the stomach with his sword, causing her to fall back in surprise and drop her weapon. He then jammed the sword blade-first into the ground. The goat's head's eyes glowed red and shadows lanced out from the blade and grabbed Victoria's arms and legs, forcing her legs together and forcing her arms behind her back.

"You should have returned to the light while you had the chance. Now you will die in darkness! You will beg for mercy but you will not find it!" Zupazu promised as he slowly dragged his claws across her left cheek. Victoria screamed in pain and the audience roared in approval. She was in a bad place and had to get out of it fast.

Demon's Call Empty Re: Demon's Call

Post by Victoria Sheridan 30th December 2018, 3:16 pm

Victoria desperately tried to think of a way out as Zupazu clawed her stomach again. Her stomach was looking like someone took a cheese grater to it. Zupazu punched her in the left eye until her face was bleeding and she could not see out of it. Victoria needed to get free.

The end is near. You will die alone and forgotten. You will die in the darkness. The whispers were taunting her again.

Victoria's eye opened. That was it! She could use her shadow power to turn the tables! There were plenty of shadows around made by the torches and a few of them were within the fifty-meter radius of the power's range. Three even danced around his sword... Zupazu was going to be in for it now.

Zupazu's right hand was wreathed in flames. He pressed his hand against her face, generating heat that made her scream in agony. It was now or never. She stretched her fingers out and they began to glow purple, then her hands were wreathed in darkness. She reached for the sword and the shadow hands grabbed its grip. They slowly pulled it from the ground, then yanked it free, releasing her from the demon's shadowy restraints.

Impossible. A mortal could not defeat Zupazu. The victory would only be temporary, the whispers promised.

"WHAT?" Zupazu bellowed just before his own sword sliced through his arm and the severed limb flopped to the ground. He roared in pain and staggered backwards while clutching the stump of his right arm. A vengeful Victoria slashed him across his stomach three times and the right cheek, then plunged the sword into the leg she had shot earlier. He roared again and continued to roar as he pulled the sword from his leg with his remaining hand. Victoria took the opportunity to use her shadows to grab his wrists and ankles, holding him long enough to bring out her rocket launcher and take aim.

Impossible. A mortal could not defeat Zupazu. The victory would only be temporary, the whispers repeated.

"You have won this day, but I will return! I swear it!" Zupazu defiantly pledged before Victoria fired a Bunker Buster that finished the demon lord off. He exploded in dark flames and disappeared. So did the imps and the larger demons in the audience. The whispers finally stopped, allowing her to finally relax.

Victoria dispelled the rocket launcher and clutched her bleeding stomach. The book was now hers for the taking. Victoria slowly walked to the pedestal and retrieved the brown leather hardback etched with strange sigils and written in an undecipherable language with blood red letters. She put the book into her backpack and spotted a small glass jar sitting beneath the pedestal. She grabbed it and walked over to the glowing water, filling the container with Living Water and corking it.

The brunette then turned around and walked away, starting the laborious trek back to the surface and to the client. Once the book had been delivered, her job would be complete. She felt the darkness rising again, like Zupazu would make good on his pledge sooner than she wanted him too. Victoria was in no shape for a second round with the demon lord, so she made good her escape and slowly ascended to the surface.

Victoria had gone toe-to-toe with a demon and lived to tell the tale. That was something to tell the people back at Sabertooth. Now to return the book and get home.
