    Spoiler:

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

It was not long before Serilda and Mythal were paired up again. And, of all things, it was actually Mythal that had suggested it. Upon returning to the Magic Council and giving the briefing of what happened with the slavers, the Council’s representative informed the God Slayer that there was another job that had his particular name on it. He took it and was preparing to leave before he stopped, going back to Serilda and asking her if she would join him on it. It was an absolutely ludicrous moment that perhaps they both didn’t quite understand but he had done it anyways. Despite the way things kept happening, there was undeniable thing; they worked very well as a team. Even though they didn’t mesh at all in terms of upbringing, personality or even magic, there was a sort of thing that allowed them to complete jobs well together. There was no point in denying it so he decided to steer into the skid. If anything, it meant he could take on more dangerous jobs and know he had a reliable partner… even if she was from Sabertooth.

In fact, he’d been developing a small inkling of a thought upon their return to Era. But he had become distracted when the representative had made a thing out of his Rising Star status. It seemed something everyone was opting to point out rather than just ignore, except Serilda. Whether that meant she was aware of it or not, she didn’t seem to give away.

Apparently this next job was in the Ancient Ruins and required them meeting the creator of the leaflet, Lexa Grimoire. It seemed she needed assistance in getting through some tunnels under the surface so it sounded like a fairly easy protection job. Having someone who seemed far better at defense, like Serilda, would leave a better impression. So they set out, journeying side by side for the first time since their job at Desierto.

They’d been walking for a while when Mythal finally broke the silence, surprising even himself.  "Uh… thanks for helping. I know it seems silly but… this kinda job will go better if I have someone I can rely on next to me,” he said, sounding sincere despite the complex attempt at wording it earnestly.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

All things considered, the last job had gone over fairly well. There was a bit of embarrassment toward the end of it for her, but Serilda managed to focus forward and not let it consume her. She and Mythal had made their way back to the Council, somehow not even managing to fight on the way there. She assumed it was mostly because Mythal was too amused to be angry at her, and without him fueling her fire it died pretty quickly.

Upon returning to the Council, they received much praise for their success in not only saving all the missing women, but also for apprehending the enemies alive -- though some of their men had apparently been a bit horrified at how they’d found the first two slavers she’d captured. Serilda had to go back down to that alley herself to free them from their stone prisons, because she’d dragged them into the ground until only their faces were above the surface and then solidified the packed dirt around them. No amount of digging was going to get those two out, only a wizard in control of space manipulating magic like Serilda.

Interestingly, it was actually Mythal who received more verbal praise between the two of them. Supposedly he’d become a rising star recently, a piece of information that Serilda tucked away to consider but made no comment about. He was clearly uncomfortable about all of it, which was starting to become a bit of a theme with him she realized. Serilda didn’t speak on it mostly because she found it more intriguing than anything else and wanted to arrange her thoughts on the matter before bringing it up.

When all was said and done, the Lady moved to be on her way. She’d already recovered from her injuries as the council had sent her to their own physicians to be seen to, but it had been a long trip. She was ready to go home and relax with Xiuhcoatl for a little while. However, her plans got changed due to a very unsuspecting turn of events. After checking in and receiving their payment from the council, they had tasked Mythal with another job.

And he’d actually gone out of his way to track her back down before she could leave Era, and asked her to go with him. The woman blinked at him a couple of times to process what was going on before she was capable of forming words to reply. The two of them had worked together several times, now, but always because of happenstance or because they’d been forced to. They barely tolerated one another, and Mythal was not exactly shy about the fact that he hated all humans and would prefer to be left alone.

So him actually asking her to join him on another mission, immediately after having just finished one, was a bit weird. Surely he’d have wanted some time to himself before diving right into another mission with her. What was even stranger was that she’d agreed to do it. It was a bit of a trip from Era to the ruins where they’d been instructed to meet, and as usual there was a fair bit of silence between them.

Interestingly, it was Mythal who broke it first. And of all things, it was to… compliment her? He was showing some appreciation, and Serilda wasn’t exactly sure how to take that. “It’s not a problem,” she told him truthfully. After a beat, she added, “A bit… surprising, I’ll admit. But not a problem.”

Xiuh trotted happily between the two of them, keeping close to Serilda’s heels. “So… did this client happen to mention what exactly she found in these ruins?”

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Considering all that Mythal and Serilda seemed to do was argue outside of working, it was a bit surprising when she agreed to do the job with him. He had asked because… he was following up on a hunch that he just couldn’t shake. There weren’t very many people he considered allies, let alone friends, but she had proven to be invaluable in the former. He honestly wasn’t sure if she felt the same way or if she was simply coming along because it was a chance for more jewel and opportunity to impress the Magic Council. He couldn’t really fault her if it was the latter; he had been quite upfront about his dislike of anyone that was human. But that was more in a general sense, wasn’t it? There were certain people that didn’t infuriate him just to see them. And he’d gone out of his way to defend Fairy Tail when he’d heard it insulted. It was all very confusing.

"Hah… yeah,” he agreed with her, practically admitting that it was even surprising to him. He wasn’t hiding the fact that he was just as confused by his move to ask her to join him. "Not many people can put up with me; as I’m sure you’re aware, I’m a bit of an ass,” he said his thoughts aloud, reaching up to scratch at his chin. "But I’m not an idiot and if I see someone that I can work with and get jobs done easier, then I take notice. My… feelin’s towards humans is general so a person or two sometimes slips through the cracks and kinda get in this area of tolerance,” he continued, drawing circles in front of himself to graph out what he was meaning. It didn’t sound great in truth but for Mythal, it was fairly wise.

He shrugged, thrusting his drawing hand back in his pocket. "Just sayin’; if you needed help sometime, I may not say no.” At least his attempts at conversation still weren’t that great. Luckily the topic of the job came up and he pulled the flyer out of his pocket, reading it over. "She mentions that she needs to go into the caves…found something odd… and her name is…”

“Lexa!” A loud, boisterous voice rang out from in front of them as a girl rushed up in front of them, waving aggressively. She looked like a teenager at best, maybe just touching on fifteen or so. She was dressed oddly for one that was exploring tunnels, her short blonde hair bouncing against her shoulders as she raced up to the trio. She came to a skidding halt before Mythal, her eyes wide and nearly shining. “You’re Mythal!” she stated, pointing at him.

"Uh…” He started before she dashed over to Serilda, just as eager.

“I don’t know who you are but hi, I’m Lexa. Oh my god, is that a puppy?” she fell down on her knees, planting her hands on her legs and clapping them there. “Hi puppy!”

Oh dear Gods, what had he agreed to?

"Character counts most when duty calls."

“You? An ass?” She asked him sarcastically. The tone was a bit different than times she’d pointed her sarcasm at him before, though. Though it was definitely dry, and might take him a second of scrutiny to confirm, the straight-laced business woman was making an actual, honest to gods joke. There wasn’t a smirk on her mouth, but there was just enough of a hint of one in her eyes for him to take notice.

Still, this was an odd side to him. She really didn’t know how to react to it. Had she ever heard him put this many sentences together at once that were meant for conversation, rather than just getting a job done? Serilda listened to his words, and they held a certain ring of truth to her. She wasn’t really sure that she’d consider him a friend, but ally was an apt word. Looking back, Serilda realized that, despite their differences and petty arguments, she had learned to trust him a lot more than she ever thought she would.

Either way, he was clearly attempting to make an effort on some front, and she wasn’t going to insult him by ignoring that. “I’ll remember that,” she told him sincerely when he made it clear to her that he’d probably go out of his way to help her, too, if she ever wanted it. The woman made it a point to look at him when she said it, blue eyes locking onto his crimson ones long enough to assure him that his offer wasn’t going to be brushed off.

Mythal pulled out the job sheet to go over the details with her, but before he could so much as finish a sentence they were bombarded by the presence of a third person. Serilda had been so preoccupied by whatever strange moment of bonding had just happened between the two of them that she hadn’t even noticed this Lexa woman approach.

She was certainly a boisterous one, and that already offset the collected noblewoman. Serilda disliked overly animated individuals as a general rule, and this seeming child practically screamed rambunctiousness. The Voidwalker raised a single brow slowly, in a very deliberate struggle to maintain patience even as the girl knelt down to the ground and started cooing at Xiuhcoatl like she were a common house pet.

“I am Serilda Sinclair, and Xiuhcoatl is a wolf hound trained for hunting and combat. You would be wise to keep your distance from her.” It wasn’t a threat so much as a statement of fact. Xiuh shifted anxiously where she stood. A part of the wolf was interested in this person that seemed to exhilarated to make her acquaintance, but at the same time she sensed Serilda’s veiled dislike and caution toward the girl. It hadn’t helped that Lexa had bounded up without really giving the animal any space to feel comfortable near her yet, either. So Xiuh ultimately chose to sit nestled up against Serilda’s ankle, dark eye watching the young girl warily.

It didn’t take long for the overeager client to explain what she needed. She wanted a protection detail through a series of abandoned tunnels, at the end of which she’d supposedly found something of interest -- though she remained suspiciously vague on what that was. Serilda couldn’t completely hide the scowl from her face. This entire situation was entirely too odd for her tastes. A little girl dressed like a ten jewel hooker, asking to be escorted into a dangerous, rundown mine shaft that she’d already gotten to once before just fine, for something she offered little to no detail about?

If Mythal caught a glance at his partner, he’d know the woman didn’t like this job one bit, and wasn’t buying the girl’s story. That, or she just severely disliked the girl’s bubbly demeanor and was imagining multiple different ways to skewer the girl with her scimitar. Either way, this wasn’t her job. She was here to help, but Mythal had been the one especially requested, so she would follow his lead.

Ultimately, it was decided that they would press forward. A job was a job, after all, and while the circumstances were bizarre to the point of being outright suspicious, Lexa had yet to give them any reason to distrust her motives. Into the tunnels they went, with Serilda taking the lead and Mythal at the rear, keeping Lexa between them. The placement killed two birds with one stone: If she was between them, danger would have to get past the two wizards to strike. If she proved to be the danger herself, well… Serilda trusted that Mythal would have her back.

Using her Void sense, she carefully lead them forward at the girl’s directions. Serilda was able to ascertain when they were being approached by creatures with more than enough warning to be ready for them. Along the way, they came across a strange looking spider as well as a dog. Before the creatures even got the chance to attack or set up any kind of ambush, Serilda warped the void space in the floor at their feet, causing the beasts to drop into the ground where she immediately sealed them in a rock tomb from which they’d never escape. The only parts of them that she left above ground were their heads.

They had strange, glowing circuits fused into their bodies, like they were some kind of walking science experiments. The rabid creatures hissed at them harmlessly as the trio stared at them. Serilda moved closer to Mythal, inching her way up until she was practically nestled up against him in the darkness of the cave. Once she was sure she could whisper without the girl hearing, she told the man, “This doesn’t feel right. Everything about this is sketchy.” This close, Mythal would be able to feel how tense and on edge she was in here, despite her collected exterior. “You said the council gave you this job? Aren’t they supposed to like you or something?”

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

She actually cracked a joke. Mythal must have fallen and cracked his skull and was slowly bleeding out somewhere. There was no way that Serilda was actually jesting about his being an ass without being angry or trying to chastise him. There was a moment of pause before he let out a snort, a dry laugh that he couldn’t quite hold back in. He looked at her sideways and shook his head, quite openly entertained.

Apparently this… Lexa, was quite the forward and friendly type. It was a stark contrast between the two coming to aid her in her explorations of the tunnels. Her over eagerness was not the kind that was infectious either – it was more a nuisance than anything else. She greeted them with such fervor that it almost made Mythal think twice about continuing onward. He actually was kind of hoping that Xiuhco would snap or bark at the woman for being so… childish towards her. But Serilda was quick to learn the woman about the nature of her hound and that treating her like a mere pup would end quite painfully. Mythal hid another chuckle by covering his mouth with his hand.

But Lexa was quick to calm down after Serilda's explanation and then broke into her own… version of an explanation. Lexa had journeyed into the line shafts first, found something that intrigued her and then came back out to ask for help. If it was some heavy object, she should have spoken about it right away. Yet whatever she found was mysteriously… left unspoken of. Mythal looked over at Serilda out of the corner of his eyes and knew she was as conspicuous as he was. It was like adding two and three and hoping for banana bread.

But now, more than anything, he was interested in what this was. Could it be some kind of trap? If it was, it was a really lazy one. But he had Serilda there and she'd proven numerous times that she could not only handle herself but also back him up. So they headed into the tunnels, with the Voidwalker heading up the front and the God Slayer in the back. Lexa happily walked between them, humming and swinging her arms to and fro. She didn't seem concerned about anything, which was both worrisome and not. If she tried anything rash, she'd be dealt with quickly by him before she could even make a move.

Lexa offered directions and Serilda led them through the tunnels with ease. When a handful of creatures came at them, their ferocious mangled forms odd and warped, she was quick to open up the ground and trap them with her magic. They snapped and hissed as they approached to inspect them, each one taking time to look them over. Lexa was the last to bend down and look them over, teasing the dog with her hand.

Serilda moved closer to him, practically pressed against his body. She'd be surprised to find he didn't immediately seize up or stiffen at the presence of a human so close to him. He bent his ear down a little, though his eyes remained on the girl near the monsters. He snorted again. "Its me we're talkin’ about; no one likes me,” he whispered back, offering a bit of humor to aid the tension, if only a little. "It was one of their reps. I'm startin’ to think they were lead astray too.” He glanced at her before he stepped forward. "Why didn't you mention these things before, Lexa?” he asked her.

She turned back and shrugged at him in answer, rising to her feet. "Got anythin’ to say?” he pushed further, almost demanding answers.

“Don't blame her; she'd just as confused as you!” A shrill voice broke through the air, tearing the tension to shreds. From the darkness ahead of them, a man emerged. He was humanoid in shape and form but circuits and wires were attached to his arms and chest. He waved a scalpel in front of him like a massive blade, giggling as he did so.

Mythal stepped around Lexa, putting himself before the scientist. "So you have answers then?” He asked.

“Answers?” The man asked back, grinning from ear to ear. “Answers lie ahead. But you; you won't get answers. I will stop--ack!” He was cut off mid sentence as Mythal closed the distance between them in a flash, his fist slamming into the man's stomach. As the God Slayer pulled his hand back, his shadow magic coating over his arm. As the scientist tried to recover from the sudden attack, Mythal slammed his fist into his face, dazing him. Then his arm started pumping into the scientist's face, chest and stomach. The crazed man tried to stab the scalpel blindly, managing to slice the God Slayer’s cheek. That only seemed to incense him further as he leapt up and spun, slamming his leg into the other man's stomach.

The force of it sent him flying, laughing the entire way. He hit something heavy and metallic, which wound up being the door leading to another room. The door was ripped off its hinges and crashed onto the ground, the metal clinging to the man as the force he'd been hit with bent the door around him, embedding him.

Mythal led the group into the room, stepping onto the stuck man's chest. His eyes snapped up and widened, looking around the room. There were statues lining the walls, clad in heavy-looking armor. And between each statue were large canisters, filled with a green slowing liquid. Even more disturbing was the one in the center on the back wall was filled with something. Something that looked exactly like Lexa.

    ”The hell is this?”

"Character counts most when duty calls."

This whole thing was turning into one worse and worse nightmare.

Mythal joked about no one liking him, but Serilda was too on edge to even catch the humor in it. All she could think was, Great, the council is actively trying to off Mythal and I let myself be pulled right in alongside him. It wasn’t a real sentiment, of course, but this place and these strange creatures in it were giving her the creeps.

It didn’t help when something else approached them. The Void mage instantly turned and unsheathed her sword, but did not open up the floor due to one important reason: She could feel the shape moving toward them was humanoid. Not wanting to accidentally attack someone innocent, she waited until the man showed himself. Then, she instantly wished she had dropped him. The man was just as eerie and cybernetic in appearance as the two beasts had been.

Mythal didn’t waste any time once the threat in front of them was established. He immediately leapt forward, cutting the scientists of and beating him senseless. A final kick sent the other man flying through a door, revealing a scene that truly sent shivers down her spine. Serilda followed Mythal into the room slowly, looking around in disbelief.

“What the hell is this place?” she demanded of Lexa. All pretenses of niceness were gone, now. Serilda wanted answers.

She wouldn’t get them right away. Xiuhcoatl starting growling around the same time Mythal asked a similar question. Serilda’s eyes went wide in horror when she realized there was a body in one of those tanks, and it looked exactly like Lexa. Immediately, the woman rounded on the young girl and brandished her scimitar at her. “Start talking!”

“I don’t know!” Lexa said. “That’s why I needed help!”

“And you thought it wasn’t important to give us a heads up about something like this?!”

Serilda’s angry rant was cut short, however, when she registered a shift in the Void. The clone in the tank, or whatever it was, had disappeared and solidified back into existence right behind the mage. Without missing a beat, Serilda turned and thrust with her sword. The pointed end of it dug into the clone’s shoulder, but as soon as she pulled the blade out the wound visibly started to heal.

Panicking for real, Serilda unleashed a flurry of blows with her scimitar, but the clone seemed not to notice despite the fact that she had to have been struck six or seven times. If anything, it just made the girl angry. There was a crazed fierceness in her eyes that matched the happy-go-lucky bubbliness in Lexa’s, just on the extreme other end of the spectrum. The girl growled and raised a hand, snapping her fingers.

A chasm opened beneath Serilda’s feet as well as above her head. The woman gasped and tried to throw herself out of the way, but she didn’t quite make it in time before the yawning magical hole sent a barrage of pointed weapons raining down on her. The first one passed through her body without consequence. After that, the woman wasn’t so lucky. A dagger embedded itself through one of her biceps, poking through the back of her arm, and a sword did the same thing through her calf.

She screamed and dropped to the ground in agony, head swimming from the pain as she fought to not pass out. Xiuhcoatl snarled and launched herself at the fake Lexa, biting her over and over until the portal attack broke off and her maw snapped on thin air.

Just like Mythal, the clone had fallen into her shadow and disappeared, but with the dim lighting in the cave, she could be anywhere...

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

All Mythal wanted was more information. This was turning into a haunted house-type ordeal and the last thing the God Slayer wanted to deal with was more ghosts and creepy things. Markus and him had dealt enough with that in the Haunted Lands – last thing he wanted was to handle that once more, in some ancient ruins, with these weird…robot creature things. And while Mythal wasn’t an empath of any kind, he could tell that Serilda was not pleased by these circumstances. Normally she’d at least react to his words but she had absolutely nothing to say.

And frankly, Mythal had little to say either. The scientist hadn’t offered any information, beyond pointing them in the right direction to get more. So his usefulness was drained and the God Slayer made quick work of beating him. The door into the other room was rudely bashed open by the scientist’s body and in came the group, seeking the answers that had led them down here. And what they walked into was a laboratory of the creepiest sense. Cylinders filled with thick, ominous liquid and a woman sitting in one, looking exactly like Lexa. Things had turned completely and Mythal whirled on the girl, just as Serilda demanded answers.

Xiuhco began to growl, a dire warning that something wasn’t right here. That much was obvious but when an animal began to growl in such a fashion, they could sense something else – something humans weren’t quite attuned to. As his partner pulled her blade and pointed it at girl just as the God Slayer was looking at the hound in question. She barely heard the answers that Lexa provided as he felt… something. His ears felt a pulsing, almost like his heartbeat was throbbing in his own head.

Then everything went into full speed. The clone of Lexa had teleported from her canister and was approaching Serilda. She attacked, stabbing into the girl’s shoulder but seemingly not causing any pain. All it did was create anger; an unbridled force that even Mythal felt as he whirled to face her. His partner stabbed several times into the woman but only seemed to hasten the fuse’s detonation within her rage. And then she unfolded two different portals above and below Serilda, almost trapping her within the void between. Weapons of all types came soaring through the openings, attempting to pierce her all across her body. She wasn’t quite quick enough to get out of the way fully, two blades inserting themselves into her arm and then into calf.

"Serilda!” He roared, the first time he had accurately said her name. She fell to the ground in pain as Xiuhco launched herself at the crazed Lexa, gnawing on her until she zipped out of existence. But this time he could feel it in the ground; she had taken to her shadow as a means of escape and was moving about the room – though he couldn’t pinpoint where. He ran over and pushed the other Lexa through the door back into the hallway, strong enough to knock her onto her back. He then took his guard over Serilda, planting himself in position almost on top of her. It was only the second time he had done so recently, ironically both times with Serilda directly involved.

He stood there, eyes darting back and forth until he spotted her, reappearing on the other side of the room. As she took form once more, the circuits on her body began to glow a bright, almost painful crimson. Her body shook as the brightness increased further, her tiny little face wrinkling with a mixture of pain and rage. Then the circuits detonated, exploding all across her body as she let out a blood-curdling scream. The jars around the room cracked and began to piss out the fluid from inside, the strange substance starting to coat the floor.

The clone was growling loudly now, her voice broken as she set her gaze on Serilda. She took a step and Mythal countered it, moving her attention to him. "Don’t you dare,” he growled out, the bones in his hand snapping as he tightened his grip.

She must have taken that as a challenge, for the Lexa clone launched herself at them, practically sailing across the ground. Mythal pushed off and darted forward, his magic coalescing over his arm as he cocked it back. When they met, it was fist against fist and the shockwave from the impact shattered the jars in the room. As the jelly-like liquid flowed all over the tiles, Mythal and the Lexa-clone battled it out. They exchanged blows at a rapid rate, fist hitting face, knee hitting stomach – one after the other they beat and bruised one another. Lexa didn’t incorporate any other techniques; choosing rather to wail on Mythal with every bit of physical strength she had. She was strong, stronger than most the God Slayer had fought in his lifetime. He was going to be hurting for days after this.

But he wasn’t going to let up; he took every strike and repaid it in kind, utilizing his martial arts to counter her when he could. He could see the anger in her eyes swell – incensed that he wasn’t going down easily. Her gaze snapped away for only a moment and then smallest smirk pulled on her lips. As Mythal threw his next punch, the girl disappeared from her spot, his fist passing through the space she had just occupied. Whirling, he saw her reappearing near Serilda and Xiuhco, her hand already stretching out. Before the portals could even fully open, the God Slayer had dashed back to Serilda and his hands were sliding under her armpits. She would have only a moment to truly understand before she was being tossed away, thrown impolitely from where she was. Her landing would hurt, given the weapons in her body, but as the rain of daggers came soaring down from the top portal, she would be far enough away not to get hit.

Mythal, unfortunately, was not. Each blade jabbed into his back, piercing the crimson cape and the shirt beneath that. Half a dozen of the daggers remained embedded into his back. The portals closed a moment later and the God Slayer fell to a knee, using his right fist to keep himself from falling all the way over by planting a fist. The Lexa-clone snickered, an evil little sound that made his blood boil. He could feel her walking to him, the inch-deep of liquid shifting as she approached him from behind. But before she could even think about resuming her assault, Mythal spun around, the fist he had used to steady himself as white as snow. When it slammed into the clone’s chest, there was a sickening crunch before she was sent soaring upwards into the ceiling. The entire roof above them shattered as she hit it, raining pieces of tile all across the center of the room.

The Lexa-clone hung there for a moment before she slowly lifted her head, her eyes now back to normal. “I guess… big sisters are made stronger,” she mumbled. Then she vanished, her magical presence completely removed from the room.

The God Slayer wavered in his stance, barely clinging to consciousness. His willpower pushed him forward, pumping adrenaline into his system so that he could keep going. His head turned towards the door and found nothing; the original Lexa that had led them here was gone from what he could tell. Hissing between clenched teeth, he stumbled over to Serilda and slowly sunk to his knees, eyeing the swords that had pierced her flesh. No doubt they stung but… they had to remain in for now. Pulling them out would open the wounds more and could cause her to bleed out.

"This is gonna hurt…” he said, his voice barely a whisper. Carefully he reached down under her and pulled her up into his arms, being as gentle as he could be. With her held, he looked to Xiuhco and nodded his head towards the door, silently asking her to take the lead. Then they started the long, grueling process of getting out of the ruins and to somewhere inhabited by people that could help them.
