Missing or Lost Jewels? Empty Missing or Lost Jewels?

    Spoiler:

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Missing Jewelry? This seemed more like a prank than an actual job.

Mythal brought the job flyer back up to read it again, scoffing and groaning gently as his crimson gaze focused on the writing. A man and his wife had taken a holiday to Hargeon Town – why Hargeon, he’d never know – and upon return, realized they had lost all her jewelry. It wasn’t just a single necklace or ring either; it was every glittering thing she had worn during her trip. This was going to be like finding a needle in a haystack. In fact, it was going to be worse than that. He assumed that the couple had taken an opportunity to swim in the port, possibly in the safe sanctioned areas or perhaps somewhere a bit bolder. And before the wife had jumped in, she had removed her jewelry so it didn’t sink down into the sea. There was no telling if she simply forgot it there and was picked up later or if someone had come by and grabbed it. Either way, Mythal was one hundred percent sure that he wasn’t going to find it just lying around. Hargeon may be nicer than some other towns but there were still criminals about.

It was just about finding those criminals. The God Slayer wasn’t much for asking for directions or advice from people – or talking to people at all. So instead he had found himself a nice, cozy hole in the wall bar to set himself up at. Once there, he just waited and listened to the conversations going on around him. It took some time and plenty of downed drinks before he heard a group of friends talking about returning home. They mentioned going the long way, as the only shortcut they knew took them through the bad section of town. They were even kind enough to provide street names. He downed his drink and tore off.

And now he was standing in the center of one of the alleyway paths, lazily looking around at each different route. He could see people leaning out windows and staring at him and others posted up against doors, also staring at him. He looked out of sorts in a way but he also seemed to blend right in. His dismal look always seemed to give him the advantage when he moved about the dark and filthy paths of the world. He wasn’t going to get lucky here by just listening into conversations – the whispers among the people would be as silent as mice moving through the walls. He’d need to actually talk to someone to get what he wanted. He scowled slightly and then set his gaze on a comely looking fellow to his right.

He was wrapped in a thick, woolen blanket that had several holes in it. His clothes were tattered rags at best, clinging by strings to stay upon him. He was sitting in a small divot on the side path, curled up in a ball. He seemed to be asleep but frankly, that didn’t bother Mythal. The people shaken awake were the ones that usually spilled more than they meant to, if only to get back to rest. "Hey,” Mythal said, kicking the man gently to rouse him.

“Screw off, man,” came the beleaguered man’s voice from under the blanket.

"No can do, pal. I need some info,” the God Slayer continued, glancing around cautiously.

“Do I look like some’un that got info?” The man asked, lifting his head. He was a pitiful looking sort but frankly… not much more than Mythal looked on the outside.

"Yer pro’lly the only one that does. I’m lookin’ to fence some… let’s say, family heirlooms that I ain’t got much use for,” Mythal explained, crossing his arms over his chest as he looked down at the man.

The urchin pulled back the blanket from his head, actually taking a moment to take Mythal in. He looked haggard – like he had just woken up in an alleyway and started his day. There was a faint odor of booze that clung to the air around him, hinting that he was either drunk or had been recently. The exhausted and worn lines on his face also seemed to tell of his lack of comfortable living. There were a lot of traits and aspects that could be faked but that look of being down on one’s luck was nearly impossible. This man couldn’t be a Rune Knight.

“Fencin’ some shinies, eh? I may know a place… fer the right price,” the urchin said, finally flashing a grin.

Mythal scoffed and shook his head. "You think I got jewel to just hand out, kid?”

“I think you does if you want them digits,” the man replied back, holding up his hand and rubbing his fingers together.

Mythal sighed and rolled his eyes, playing the part rather easily. How many times had he actually done this after all? He crouched down and reached into his jacket pocket, looking over his shoulder to make sure no one could see what he was doing fully. He retrieved a wadded up bundle of jewel and placed it in the man’s hand carefully, the urchin closing his fist around it just as swiftly. The hand darted back under the blanket to hide his payment and then it was his turn to look around, ensuring the deal was done without prying eyes. “A’ight, old man. Yer gonna’ wanna’ head over to ol’ Sanctum Supplies two blocks down. The owner there takes… ‘acquired’ goods. Make sure you say exactly that: acquired goods. Ya got it?”

"Good enough for me,” Mythal responded, standing back up. With his business done, he headed down the alleyway to find the street again, now with a destination in mind.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

“Hello sir! How can I help you?” The bell on the door had run pleasantly as Mythal entered the shop, alerting the owner to his arrival. The man was a surprisingly scary looking man; easily a head above the God Slayer, with a body girth that made him and a wall nearly identical. But it was all muscle from the looks of it, his tight shirt nearly ripping at the seams from the effort of staying on. He had a jagged scar running from his eyebrow to his nose, a large chunk of his flesh having been hacked off during the acquisition of said scar. And when he smiled, there were several golden plated teeth that shone back at him.

He literally could not be more crooked looking. How had this place not been raided yet? Oh right; big, intimidating owner.

"Hey, I was told to come here so I could trade in some… acquired goods,” the God Slayer said, making sure to use the code word perfectly.

“Ahh…” The man said, turning slightly to look around the store for other customers. He even glanced over Mythal’s shoulder to see if anyone was peeking in from behind. “Acquired goods. Yes, I think I can help you. What were you looking to… trade in?” He asked, moving around the glass case in front of him. Within it were several pawn shop items that people would generally want to purchase or sell; things that were legally sold and bought. He walked around Mythal and turned the sign around on the door, signaling to anyone outside that the shop was closed. He even went ahead and locked the door behind him.

"Some jewelry I happened by. Heard you had the best place in Hargeon to make a quick buck,” the God Slayer continued, watching as the man returned to the case. He waved Mythal over as he passed him.

“Ahh, a common product for this part of time. Seems all kinds of people are ‘losing’ their valuables,” he explained, even throwing in the air quotes. “Just the other day, one of my regulars managed to sneak into some tourist’s hotel room and nab a bunch of loose jewel and jewelry. They were some expensive pieces too,” the owner boasted.

"Really? You mind showin’ them? I got a missus who might be interested in some nice stuff,” Mythal asked, stroking his chin.

“Might be a bit outta your price range, pal,” the shop owner replied, chuckling.

"Yours too, from what I hear. Those tourists really want those things back; enough so that they put out a job request for it. Imagine my surprise to find that they were fenced here,” Mythal explained, dropping the guise smoothly and without warning. "So how ‘bout we make this easy and you just—“

The mace slammed into his side, sending him flying into the side wall. He crashed through a glass display, utterly shattering it and sending the sharp fragments all over the shop floor along with whatever was on display inside. The shop owner pulled the mace back and hung it onto his shoulder, growling. “So you’re a wizard come lookin’ for trouble. You never stood a chance, you poor bastard.”

Mythal pulled himself from the wall, much to the surprise of the shop keeper. His clothes had been torn all over but he simply shook the glass pieces out of his hair and jacket. "You know, when I send the Knights here, I want you to tell them I gave you a chance to give the jewelry up first,” the God Slayer replied, turning his gaze to the man.

The shop keeper roared and began to move, wanting to charge Mythal. But the God Slayer was quicker, leaping off the ground and at the man. His knee drove itself into the criminal’s face, knocking him off balance and fraying his vision. As Mythal landed, he instantly bounced back up, spinning in the air like a wild top. His left leg shot out and into the man’s chest, sending him soaring back into the opposite wall and causing his mace to fall to the ground. The shop keeper groaned and pushed himself away from the wall, throwing a wild punch at the God Slayer. But he spun around the attack, knocking it away and bringing his elbow up to slam into the man’s temple. That was the defining blow and the man fell to the ground, limp, a moment later.

Mythal took the time to search through the shop thoroughly, opening up each and every case. He found a locked safe within the floor behind the glass case and after crushing the locking mechanism with his first, pried it open to find a whole slew of pawned jewelry – including the set he had been hired to find. He pocketed it and looked at the ransacked shop, sighing. "Hope you have insurance,” he said with a shrug and made his way out of the shop.
