Testing the Waters Empty Re: Testing the Waters

Post by Albafica Temero 5th September 2019, 1:32 pm

The morning sun had only just peeked across the horizon, casting light where there was darkness, and slowly but steadily warming the marble temples scattered across the lands of Sanctuary. As would become of a place devoted to training, to raising warriors, even now there were already a handful up and awake, readying themselves for yet another day of brutal training. Unique to these warriors was their physique, that could take a lot more than regular brawlers or martial artists could, all due to their inhumanly cruel training methods. Even children half Albafica's age were tormented with impossible exercises, threatened with death if they could not complete them. The teachers here never were known for their kindness during training; and especially not to those who quit prematurely. In war, or preparation of, they had no use of the faint of heart. Yet those that remained had adapted to the harsh lifestyle, and even found solace in it.

It were those people that now wandered the Sanctuary this early, looking for the best training spots, sparring partners or performing their morning routines. For Albafica, said routine did not involve others. Although he was still officially classed as one of the untitled warriors, he knew very well that he had already been given a title as successor. Even the sentient armor, the golden cloth of Pisces, had accepted him as its rightful owner. Yet rules had to be abided by, so he could not don it without permission, except in times of dire need. Such times had yet to pass, however. Yet as unofficial successor, Albafica had earned a single privilege none had dared take from him. Passage to the Sougokyu; the temple of the twin fish, and the final line of defence before reaching the goddess' palace. Although it was currently vacant, the temples that could be manned by their respective guardians had been manned. The reason that the azure-haired youth was now sitting on top of Sougokyu's roof was also that; to see what was going on below him, see how things were going before tending to the field of roses spreading across the temple's grounds.

These roses, despite their seemingly innocent, regular looks, were far more than just a field of flowers. Royal Demon Roses they were, a type of roses classed as extremely poisonous, and even lethal to those not resistant to its poison. In Sanctuary, only the Pisces saints tended to these roses, because their blood held an inborn immunity to poison. Those who took on the mantle pledged their lives to a solitary cause; remaining among these roses turned their blood into pure poison as well, which made these warriors of Pisces a danger to anyone who would draw near them. Mostly so when their blood had been spilled; which released the poisonous properties within the blood like a gas, at best viciously harming those they held dear. It was the reason that Albafica remained distant now he had returned. The temple was his playing ground, the gardens his battlefield; the roses his training partners. Every morning and evening he spent time at his master's grave within the garden, telling him about what had transpired during his years gone, and the Sanctuary down-below.

Perhaps a haphazard thing to do, but Albafica enjoyed being alone, as well as that he didn't wish to hog all of Aldebaran's free time to himself, while his own students could use it just as much. The fact Aldebaran's power was strong enough to protect himself from Albafica's poisonous blood put the young saint at ease, knowing he could still have some kind of social interaction with others. It was something, at least. The tip of the iceberg, if so to say, to the many things he wished to change about himself. Because that too was one of the reasons he had agreed to return to Sanctuary; to find himself anew before setting out again. He had duties, but as he was well aware, he couldn't fulfil them with his current power. His growth would be limited if he remained here, too. The boy sighed and leant back. Honestly, he was spending way too much time thinking about this. Action! That was what he needed! And be it as such that that was just the thing laying in wait for him.

"Albafica!" A voice resonated from down-below.

Testing the Waters Empty Re: Testing the Waters

Post by Albafica Temero 6th September 2020, 6:47 pm

A tall man in golden armor just like his, safe for a different design, resembling that of a crab, stared at him from the foot of his temple, his expression neutral. Albafica stared back, only to see the man beckoning for him to get up and off the shingled rooftop; not that he did as such, however, he only grew more curious and stared further down. The man below sighed.

"Come on Alba, this isn't funny! Get down, the Pope wants to see you." Manigoldo uttered, slightly annoyed that he had to play fetch-the-boy. Little did he know that by ushering the Pope's name, he'd actually piqued and completely captured all of the child's attention at that point.

"The Pope calls for me? Finally?"

He exclaimed in excitement, jumping down the temple roof in a swift motion, landing almost perfectly despite it being a 50 feet drop from where he was sitting.

"Why didn't you tell me that from the start? I could've been halfway up there by now if you had!" The youth exclaimed, ready to make a beeline for the Pope's chambers. A strong hand kept him in place however, and where the azure-haired child was ready to protest and swat away Manigoldo's hand, a stern glare kept him into place. The least he did was shrug of his fellow Saint's grip before stepping back. "What?" He almost growled.

"Contain yourself. It's not because you're allowed to wear Lugonis' cloth that you've automatically been recognised by His Holiness to succeed him. You know just as well as I do that you need way more training than what you have now, no matter your skill. You've yet to prove yourself to the Sanctuary, and the Pope."

Testing the Waters Empty Re: Testing the Waters

Post by Albafica Temero 9th February 2021, 5:59 pm

Albafica blinked. "That's-!" He tried, but immediately stopped himself, taking a deep breath as her reevaluated his words. It wasn't wrong what Manigoldo said, despite his age he was talented, but compared to the other twelve he had barely spent any time in harnessing his strength. It had taken him far longer training in accuracy and the mastery of Lugonis' techniques rather than the arduous training most others his age had been through. Compared to the outside world he'd been slaved and worked beyond the limits of normal humans, but compared to Sanctuary standards... yeah, they had been soft with him. But the youth wasn't here to fight that. Instead, he straightened his back and stared at Manigoldo with contempt. "Regardless of whether I am or not, the constellation of Pisces has found me worthy of its power and its protection. To represent it on this Earthland as we defend Lady Athena and the planet alike! Since when has the glory of Gold Saint been degraded to a mere title the Pope can bestow upon us, ignoring the will of the stars?!" Albafica snapped back, only his voice showing his annoyance with his fellow Gold Saint.

Manigoldo wished to retort, but Albafica rose his hand, silencing him. "Whatever you wished to say, keep it to yourself. I've got better things to do than to argue with you over already-known facts." Manigoldo scoffed, crossing his arms as he looked down upon the youth. "Bold as ever, aren't we? And where the hell do you think you're going?!" He called after the youth, who only shrugged as he started ascending the stairs towards the Pope's Chambers. "Like you said, I have  an audience to attend, don't I?" Though it took him more than enough restraint not to stomp up the stairs.

Yet once he was halfway up the staircase, all on his own, surrounded by the multitude of roses planted there as a last line of defence, he suddenly felt more at ease. These Roses had been the first thing he had seen ever since he could remember, and in a way they represented him in many ways. They looked fragile, but were far more lethal than most would give them credit for. Beautiful, but hard to reach. Easily stomped on too, though in his case not necessarily physically. It was true however in the way that Victoria and Lux had done a number on his pride. Once fully flourishing he'd learnt humility through their actions. That he shouldn't have been so full of himself that everyone would be affected by his poison. There were some who weren't affected at all, or others who reacted to it in lesser, or even non-lethal ways to being exposed to it. Like Vera, for example. And that made him smile. Because in the short time that he'd been around her and the other Rune Knights, he'd finally started feeling at home; in a far different way than the Sanctuary had been a home to him. Albafica chuckled softly at the thought, seeing the Rune Knights as the grandparental home he'd spend most his time at, being pampered in a way. Most jobs he did there were considerably less lethal than the ones he had to perform here. But in time he'd have to choose which side to fulfil his duties with more. And at this time, the choice had become an increasingly hard one to make... yet, he still had time. Juggling both was hard, but he managed thusfar.

By the time he had reached the stairs leading up to the final stretch, he'd resorted to solely looking down, mesmerised by the many flowers stretching out before him; and the rare few that had learnt to grow among the poisonous ones. His thoughts were interrupted by the oh-so familiar voice of a wise old man, kind words but with a slightly frosted bite to them. "Does it really bother you that much?" Albafica looked up, seeing a tall man with long white hair, clad in a wealthy robe but with his face covered by a full-golden helmet. A sigh escaped his small body as he stopped, only a few feet away from the man. Pope Sage, the current leader of the Sanctuary in Athena's stead; not quite her proxy, bu close to the same. And although Albafica knew the Pope wouldn't be affected by his poison, he still kept his distance, just in case. "Not necessarily that they don't agree with my current status-- or perhaps the lack thereof, but moreso the fact that they believe I haven't grown any stronger in the years the Sanctuary was left in ruins." He replied, seemingly feeling down by the matter.

Thoughtfully, the older man nodded and smiled solemnly. "I know it might be hard to believe, but they have your best interest in mind, Albafica. You might've had the training, but you lack the years of experience the others already have. Yes, you've been out there and have lived through events some of them have never done before, but not all those moments prepare you for the true meaning of guarding the temples. To guide your fellow comrades, those weaker than you." He looked at the young man, who's curiosity was now piqued and listened attentively. With a brief gesture Sage motioned for him to follow suit and turned around, ascending the rest of the stairs once more so they could talk while overlapping the last few meters to their destination. "You might have the combat part down, and you know how to hold your own, but what about teamwork? Aside from the woman you told me about, who seems slightly impervious to your poison, you don't do much with others. Afraid to harm them, rather than harness this gift you seclude yourself and let none near. Your predecessors all had the same gift you had, Albafica, but even they had some they relied on, distance or not." He glanced over his shoulder, down at the youth following his stride with a steady pace. "You, should do so too."

Albafica remained silent, letting his words mull over in his head as they finally arrived at the great halls where the Pope resided, also functioning as the audience hall for him and their Goddess once she'd arrived on Earthland. He knew this was spoken as a suggestion, but Sage had this ability to make it appear as such, yet mean what he'd said as an order. This too was meant to be an order, his goal to work towards both here and back at HQ with the Rune Knights. How he was going to do that however, was another question entirely.

Out of reflex, and as he had been taught years ago by his master, Albafica bent the knee and kneeled in front of the Pope as the man ascended his throne again, but was almost immediately told to rise again. "Tying into the conversation we had earlier, I'll give you a chance to deal with this. We've gotten reports of suspicious activity in the surrounding villages, which we believe to be of Hades' specters. Although we've already dispatched troops to the other villages, latest reports claim specter activities have reached the borders of our territory in Rodario. I'll be sending you there together with a detachment of Bronze and Silver saints to patrol the area; you'll be acting field commander until further notice." Sage rose from his chair and nodded towards him. "You also have permission to don your cloth as you see fit for this mission. Find out if the rumours are true and if possible, root out the danger as soon as possible. Gods forbid they get any closer than that…"

A short pause followed, his words but a mere whisper before his voice almost bellowed through the echoing halls, his gaze one of determination and authority. "Albafica! You have your orders, and I expect you to return successfully, have I made myself clear?" The youth rose to his feet and slammed his fist into his chest as greeting. "Yes sir!"

    Testing the Waters DbLq5c9

The village itself seemed quaint, but there was a certain amount of heaviness lingering in the air. Albafica noticed in the way his fellow saints were nervously shuffling about, eyes flicking from left to right despite them being in familiar territory. Even the villagers were acting surprisingly distant, growing nervous from the mere look of the freshly-trained saints under his command. With a huff, Albafica stopped the party following him and looked at them with a stern set of eyes, almost forcing them to ease down. He might not be tall or physically imposing, but there was an aura of experience around the young boy that surely enough intimidated even those thrice his age if he had to.
