    How did this happen. He was doing so well and now he wasn’t! To make matters worse he had to wait around for help to come or else he was going to starve. That job posting had better work otherwise he was going to be up the creek without a paddle and he couldn’t afford that. No sir. Midora, would huff as he sat in a chair loaded with pillows outside of his house scanning the open fields for some sign that someone was coming to visit him. This would make hour four he had been waiting and to be frank if he had to wait any longer, he was only going to be crankier. Maybe he should’ve gone into town instead of sending off that young one to post a job for him. Did the post even make it to where it needed to go? And if so what was taking people so long? The old man huffed again and shook his head as he continued to sit and wait for someone or something to come by.

    Meanwhile a few miles away from the home, Lazarus would pad her way through the forest following the trail that was supposed to lead to the old man’s house. Well according to the paper in her hand it was this way, but honestly with all the roads and the way they twisted about, she had to wonder. Sighing inwardly, the creature would pause on the road to look at the instruction again before looking around trying to make sense of the area around them. According to the map, they needed to go through the forest until they came upon a clearing and then that clearing would lead them down a pathway to a house that resided near the cliff and in turn held their employer. They should be going the right way, yes?

    The wolf would roll up the job ad before looking over at the tall young man that was with her as she considered something for a few moments. “We think we may be a bit lost in these trees. While you have bat ears and such, can you actually fly?” the creature would ask in that strange twin voice of theirs as they looked the other up and down. Maybe if they could get a different point of view or some bearing they would be able to find the destination they sought.

    Balthazar

    ...

    Yeah well, this was hardly a glorious job to be undertaking, and to be entirely fair, Balthazar wasn't even all that interested in the likes of gardening, weed-pulling and whatnot. Sometimes however, things simply had to be done. This request seemed to offer a pretty decent reward for such a job, so why the hell not? Too bad company hadn't been written on it, because he hadn't been expecting it to happen so randomly. Eh well, the more the merrier? Picking up seaweeds and crap would be boring by oneself. Unless of course the person you were with was even more annoying than the throes of silence, but that was a factor one could hardly predict ahead of time. Guess he would just have to go along and see. Which was apparently not going all too well. The bat-like man would pause walking when his companion suddenly declared that they were lost on the go, not sure whether he should be annoyed about this or not. Really, he would rather such a simple job doesn't take him a whole damn day!

    "Eh? Well like this, not much. I could turn into a bat if truly necessary though. Not that I'm a big fan of it however.", he'd shrug when he was inquired about his flying abilities. His wings in this form weren't huge so effective flying would honestly be hard to pull off, and while he could transform into a bat, it was something he did quite rarely. He preferred to stick to a humanoid form as long as he could, since it was more natural for him that way. He'd huff somewhat gruffly. "This lame forest can't be that bad. Show me the map.", he'd remark after a moment, motioning a hand towards the other and the paper the guy was in possession of. Maybe a better look at it would solve the problem.

    The wolf would continue to move down the road for a bit pausing to look down at the map in her hand. She was pretty sure they had been going the right way, so where had she made mistake and taken a wrong turn? According to the map, the house should’ve been just a mile or so away, but nothing on the map was looking like the place they were in. Hmmm.

    “We see. Well, we don’t want to push you to do something you do not like. I just thought a higher vantage point would make it easier figuring out which way we are supposed to go. I am pretty sure we took a wrong turn. It seems like we are moving away from the goal versus towards it.” The woman would sigh a bit just as the other huffed and asked for the map.

    Without much hesitation, the woman would pass the map over to the other so he could see too. “This forest may not be the problem. Perhaps the map is the issue. From what I can tell we are going the right way, but whoever, drew the map must’ve forgotten some pieces. None of this is resembling what is written out.”

    Maybe it was part of the task. You know finding your way to the home with a map that was far from accurate? Anything could be possible, but why make what should’ve been a simple task that much more complicated? Wasn’t someone waiting for them? And if so wouldn’t taking longer than needed just make them mad? The wolf had to wonder many things as she looked around the area they were in trying her best to determine which way from here was right. Why couldn’t maps be simpler at times or at least more accurate?

    Balthazar

    ...
    Balthazar would shrug nonchalantly there. “Well, if you can’t say which way is right, then you can’t legitimately be sure how wrong we are either, can you?” Not knowing where the hell you were didn’t have to mean you were horribly off track. More like, you lost track of yourself and your own position in the area. For all they knew, they could still be going more or less the right way. Can’t expect all the damn trees to look distinctly different from one another to tell you your exact spot in the forest at a simple glance, can you now?

    Technicalities aside, he would grab the map, his red eyes squinting at it, as he flipped it side-ways a few times until he did a full circle turn. Then looking around himself for a little while, he would scratch the back of his head with a free hand, giving a gruff sigh. “Well honestly, what do you expect? Every tree drawn on the map in detail? It’d probably still not come out looking super clear. Can’t depend on maps a whole lot when it comes to forests. Unless it has very clear pathways and you don’t mess up. Otherwise the map may as well be hieroglyphs.” Maps weren’t the best system in the world anyway. They could only show vague landmarks in many cases, making it extremely easy to get lost as all hell on accident. “Anyway, I think it’s this way? Probably?”, he’d point in a direction, sounding about half-convinced. It was the best he got at the moment though. Besides, they’d end up out of the forest area sooner or later regardless of which path they took, as long as they didn’t walk in circles like idiots. “I’ll just use this map as a fan. It’s not being much more useful.”, he’d quip somewhat sarcastically as they walked on.

    “No. We suppose you cannot,” the creature would say as she gave the other a small frown not sure if she was liking or not liking this adventure that had occurred. She didn’t like being lost and it seemed that no matter which way she looked she just couldn’t figure out the path even with a map. As for the other…She would watch as he looked at the map and looked around the place also seeming to have the same issue that she was having with finding the right path.

    As she observed him, she would huff at his words. “No we do not expect every tree to be in detail here, but we would expect that if you wanted someone to find you and knew there was a forest here, then some clearer instructions would’ve been nice, but perhaps we demand to much.” Honestly, the clearer thing were, then the less time they’d waste trying to find their paths like they did now. Running a hand through her hair, the creature would wait for a moment as the other analyzed the situation and then decided on a pathway. Seeing the path as good as any, the creature would follow along side the other.

    “Well at least it has some real use now,” she would respond back as she continued to walk on the path. They would pass many trees, go around a bend, cross a small river and then eventually come out of the forest. Pausing to look around for a moment, the creature narrowed her eyes before smirking a bit as she looked over at the other.

    “Not bad, Balthazar. Not only did you get us out, but look,” she would point a short distance away. “There is our path.” Giving the other a light nudge of approval, the creature would guide them towards the path.

    **

    Some time later, a house would appear on the horizon and as they got closer, a grumpy looking man sitting in a chair. As they approached, the old man would narrow his eyes at them as fury continued to burn in those small beady eyes. “I assume you two are supposed to be the help I requested?” he would ask, his voice the calm before a storm.

    Balthazar

    ...

    Scratching the inside of one of his ears, Balthazar would shrug vaguely. “We’re talking about a map here. You say that like the dude who requested help is at fault for it, but I largely doubt they actually drew the damned map themselves. So you know, maybe go complain to whoever issues crappy map work ‘round here. Or whatever. No idea who’s in charge of that kinda stuff.” Seriously though, if a map like this was the only thing available, then it wasn’t really the customer’s fault. Sure they could try to make their own instructions, but would that be of any real help if a map is a failure already?

    “It sure does.”, he’d remark in an amused tone as he folded the map in half, fanning his face with it casually as they walked on and on. Thankfully, his pick seemed to have been fruitful enough, as they reached the given destination after a while, even if it had taken a bit more effort than he would have expected. Then again, as long as they didn’t have to swim through a lake or some shit like that…

    Once they were out of the forest, he’d pause briefly to look around and fold the map up into his pants’ pocket for now, giving a somewhat entertained huff in response. “Yeah well, sometimes you just gotta rely on instincts over some dumb map. Unless you’re a master at reading them, but I think most are generally rather confusing.” Relying on approximate drawings of surroundings that could easily change as time went, especially ones that were made of nature such as a forest like this honestly sounded like a tricky matter. Either you got lucky and figured it out, or you earned yourself a handful of frustration.

    ~~~
    Nevertheless, he wasn’t seriously intimidated by some old grumpy man, simply raising a hand in a brief greeting before offering a response. “Yeah, I would think so. I mean, unless you’d want somebody else but that would effectively be a waste of everyone’s time here.” They’ve already some all the way here after all.
    “I am sure that will help out,” the wolf would say with a roll of her eyes seeming more amused at the idea than angry. She could probably yell her head off about this matter and still get no where with it, but it could be interesting to try provided she could find the actual creator of said map. Not like this thing was signed and even if it was that would still get her nowhere in the long run. In any case, she would only give the other a slight smirk as he continued to fan himself until they eventually got out of the forest.
    Once out, she would look up at the other and nod. “Instinct or luck. I am not sure which one got us out of that one, but I am glad either way,” she would say before leading the way to the home where the grumpy old man resided. Once at the spot and the question had been posed and answered, the old man would narrow his eyes looking like he was about to give them hell, but instead he would sigh as he shook his head.
    “If I call for someone else I’ll probably be dead. I guess you two will have to do,” the old man would say before shifting in his chair with wince. “In any case, my name is Midora. About a week ago, I injured my back trying to haul some items home, so the doctor has me resting up until I am better. Problem is the healing will take about a month and surviving a month with my little supplies will not due. I need you two wiper snappers to go out in the area to collect the various edible foods in the wild. Around here you can find aquatic plants, fruits, roots, mushrooms, rare species of plants, insects, and animals, etc, etc. You name it is out there.” He would pause to point out two large baskets about the size of a human on the porch. “Take them baskets there and fill them up to the brim and bring them back to me. I prefer this be done quickly as I would like to eat something soon. Simple right?” he would finish as he looked over at the pair.
    “Simple enough,” the wolf woman would reply before stepping forward to grab one of the baskets from the porch. Once the basket was in her hand, she would sling it over her shoulder for easy caring before waiting for Balthazar before going out to collect the items the old man requested.
