The night was ending.  The sun hadn't yet climbed up yet and already the rays of light were casting out the darkness, bathing the land in warmth and light.  The land was covered sheets of dew, each sparkling as they reflected the light they received in all directions, as if to praise the arrival of the sun.  Birds flew from tree to tree, chirping their morning songs, aware of nearly everything going on in their vicinity.  Including the cloaked stranger who was walking by.

Oras had recently packed his tent and sleeping bag and was on the move yet again.  He never stayed somewhere too long, and when he traveled he took his time, which nearly always resulted in having to stop to sleep for the night.  This of course was the life he was used to.  He was a nomad ever since his family and friends had perished and it would remain that way until he had found a more stable life that he enjoyed.  He doubted this would occur for a good long while so he would instead focus on the present.  Worrying about today rather than yesterday or tomorrow.  He pulled out his map as he walked to see what town he was hitting next:  Magnolia town.  From what he had heard, this town was typically a peaceful place, holding more festivals than any other town or city.  He also heard there was a wizard guild here as well.

He put the map away and returned his attention to the path he was walking on.  Sure enough in the distance he saw the town of magnolia.  Peaceful town was the description he had been given.  Peaceful did not describe whether the town would be busy, slow, loud or quiet.  There was no way to determine what may or may not occur until he stepped into the gates and observed the area himself.  Seeing as how they celebrate many festivals he might end up walking into one by accident.  Of course he won't let himself interrupt the festival and celebrating.  Today, like any other town or city, he would be exploring the town, getting an idea of where everything was.  He always felt better if he knew he was prepared for combat, no matter what.  And during combat, it was important to know the grounds you fought on.

Before he surveyed the town he would need to find a place to store his things.  He typically liked to be thorough in his surveying and thus would take a while.  And while he was here, he may as well check the notice boards to see if there was any jobs available.  Most of his food came from hunting in the wilderness, but when he entered towns he would need the money for rent and extra supplies that he might need in case no food is around.  Most people either didn't know how to feed themselves when outside towns with nothing but nature to live off of, or would much rather indulge themselves and feed their innate desires.  Of course there was nothing wrong with desiring sweet tasting foods every once and a while, but Oras preferred a more balanced and less indulging diet.

As Oras approached the town gates the first thing to catch his attention was that there were in fact no walls or gates of any sorts that he could see.  Much like many towns he had visited, as well as his hometown, they were unconditionally unprepared for any attack other than the wizard guild that rested somewhere in this town.  While that itself would mean much protection, an assault could easily cause much destruction and death before the wizards could end the threat.  Why people decided to remain so lax and unprepared was beyond Oras.  The only way he could understand people could be so would be if they were either lazy, uncaring, or ignorant of how the world truly was.  One way or another these people should get a wake up call one way or another.  Oras knew though that it was not his place to teach that lesson.

Approaching what seemed to be the inn, he passed by a few citizens who seemed to be the ones who woke up early in the morning.  While they looked at him with curiosity, they mainly ignored him and talked swiftly with each other, seeming excited or enjoying themselves.  The obvious conclusion would be that there was a festival going on, and if he listened carefully to the citizen's conversation he might receive a few details on the festival as well.  However since this town was a very peaceful and cheerful town, he doubted that there would be a festival that held dangers of any sort, meaning he didn't need the details.

Oras entered the inn of Magnolia town and analyzed the area.  The bartender seemed to have only recently prepared the area and there was one man at the counter, with two people sitting down at a pair of tables, most likely waiting for their breakfast.  The building was decently decorated, made and designed to be friendly and comforting, inviting people to come in and be merry.  Just the type of thing he would expect from this town.  The people who were a wake at the counter and table seemed cheerful, having what seemed to be a very pleasant conversation that Oras would probably never be a part of.  These people going about their lives in comfort and safety, never having to worry.  Never feeling fear.  Always being happy.  Oras personally felt that constant joy, happiness, enjoyment, could blind and potentially kill a city....  His did after all.

Oras arrived at the counter and the inkeeper approached him wearing a bright smile as they cleaned a flask.

"Good morning there sir!  Is there anything I can get you this fine day?"  Oras placed his hand on the counter, leaving a few jewel on the counter.
"A room for the night.  That will be all thank you."  The inkeeper accepted the jewel and nodded, the smile still fresh on his face.
"Third room upstairs to the left.  I'm going to take a guess and say you're here for the festival then?  It's going to be a lot of fun."  Oras shifted his pack.
"No."  With that he began to make his way to the second floor, his back to the curious looks the citizens of Magnolia town were giving him right now.  He walked in through the door and took off his pack, placing the survival gear and tent down by the bed.  Walking over he checked the lock, examining it.  Well at least they knew how to make a decent lock he thought to himself.  He then walked over to the window and pulled the curtains in, blocking any and all view.  The room was bigger than he was used to but it didn't matter.  The only thing he'd be using would be the bed.  Other than that he would be outside for the rest of the day.

Post by Oras Auro 5th July 2017, 4:21 pm

With the action of establishing a place to store his things while he surveyed the city being resolved, Oras made his way back downstairs and straight towards the door.  He could feel the gazes and stares that followed him closely behind as nobody wanted their celebration to be ruined by a mysterious cloaked figure.  He understood their concerns and their fears, despite that there was really nothing to be concerned about.  He was observing the town as he passed through and nothing more.  If anything disastrous occurred, Oras would not be the source of the issue.  Perhaps someone would make an assumption and cause trouble then and people would accuse Oras of stirring trouble.  Even if that were the case he wouldn't provoke any further agitation.  And even if things should escalate, a wizard guild was in the town, and thus would be right there if things got out of hand.

Oras began to make his way down the street towards the plaza.  From there he would make his way to the bell tower he saw in the distance to get a vantage  point and get a good overview of the town.  Once he had that he would be able to focus on moving around the town and seeking all the quickest paths, alley's, and exits, and getting a good feel for the town in general.  He would also do his best to memorize places of interest or importance, as well as their locations.  The process wasn't difficult for him, the only flaw was that it was time consuming.  Thus the reason for his renting a room for the night.  Time consuming as it was however, it was important.

    Time Lapse

Oras had already explored a good portion of the town, making his way past many citizens who were out having fun.  From multiple conversations he picked up along the way, he figured out that there was to be a parade sometime after sunset, most likely exactly after sunset.  He would be in bed for that as he didn't concern himself too much for that sort of thing.  As he walked down a new street, a group of children noticed the figure and grinned widely at each other.  Today of all days they were more daring and careless than ever.  Not only that but there weren't many adults who were willing to play seriously enough for them.  One of them, a young boy, ran up to Oras and walked beside him.

"Hiya!"  Oras glanced down at him and nodded before looking forward again.  "I know you're not working!  Nobody works during festivals.  So where are you going?"
"My intention is to form a mental map of this town," he replied to the child.  The kid's face showed utter confusion and he clarified more slowly.  "It's my first time here and I'm exploring before moving on."  The kid's grin returned.
"Well then how about we find a fun way to do it?  Like say, a game of tag?"  Oras turned to look at the kid who was very well bubbling with excitement.  Oras stopped in his tracks, calculating whether or not this would be worth his time.  In the end he decided there really was nothing better to do and it would indeed speed the process up as well as give him some physical activity.
"Very well.  What are the rules?"

The kid grinned widely. Obviously he had been eager to find a suitable partner other than his current friends. More than likely all other children either had no interest in tag, were not friends with them, or were already doing an activity of their own. Thus the only ones available would be strangers; adults. It was clear from the child's first and immediate sentence spoken to Oras, that most everyone they had spoken to had found some excuse as to not participating. Adults usually did that as they either had something they deemed better to do, or wanted to escape physical activity. Oras would take advantage of this however as it would help speed up the process of analyzing the town as well as keep him active today.

"The rules are really simple! Because your an adult, we get a fifteen second head start! No magic or vehicles allowed. You'll be it first and the game ends when you've caught three of us." Oras scanned the children and counted five of them: Three boys and two girls. All of them seemed to be rather fit and being kids they might be mischievous. This would probably end up as hide and seek tag more than anything. And yet seeking out the children would, again, speed things up. He nodded.

"Very well then." The kid grinned.
"Alright then! You'll count to fifteen and then we'll go and-"
"Fifteen. Fourteen." The kids giggled and laughed before dashing out into the streets, making an attempt to escape his sight. Two went to the sides, down alleyways. One ran behind him down the path he came and the last two down the other end of the street. Oras continued to count and once he hit zero he dashed for the nearest building and scaled it swiftly, rushing to the edge of the roof and scanning for which path the child might have taken. The direction he took was to the right, pursuing that child first due to the fact that this path had more paths and places to hide. As he did he spotted a foot that vanished just as quickly to the right and turned sharply on the roof. He could hear excited chuckling as he did, the child obviously hearing his movement on the roof.

Oras leaped off of the roof preparing to touch the child's arm or shoulder but was surprised to see that the child wasn't there. When he landed he scanned the area, noticing a narrow alley in the center of the path. His first thought was that the child had run down there but then... He walked down the path keeping his eyes and ears out. He wasn't disappointed. He turned to his left and pulled a trash can out of the way, revealing the bubbly child behind. He touched the child on the arm.

    "One out of five."

With one child caught, he leaped towards the wall and grabbed a hold, pulling his body the rest of the way and landing on the roof top. Once there he began to head for the next child on his list. With a child being able to choose freely and randomly they could be anywhere. But he knew how fast a typical child could run and was able to determine the radius they might reach. So to start he ran along this invisible border, keeping an eye out for any of the children. This strategy was worth it as he spotted one of them before leaping down and tagging her, causing her to scream at first, then laugh upon seeing the man tag her.
    "Two out of five."

With that he returned to the rooftops. He might be able to catch one more of these children in this manner if he was fast enough, but the rest would be mixing in the buildings by now rather than running to the edge of the town. They were young and random, not stupid. As he ran along the edge he managed to spot in the distance, through a clearing of buildings, another child. He ran in the direction of his finding, all the while keeping an eye out for any other child that might attempt to escape his notice. Surprisingly there was. He stopped immediately and turned around, shooting towards the child who had just darted out of hiding and was now laughing and giggling as they were chased. Oras leaped to the ground and launched himself towards the girl, touching her shoulder as he passed.
    "Three out of five."

He leaped onto the wall and scaled it, resuming his chase. The child in the clearing was most likely in some form of cover now, but since he couldn't use magic it would take forever to find him in those streets. He climbed a tower and sat for a minute, scanning the large city for anything of meaning. After about five minutes he spotted movement and jumped from the tower, rolling on the roof before running in the target's direction. It didn't take him long and when he did leap from the roofs he seemed to startle the kid. When he reached for him however, the child rolled out of the way, hoping to escape Oras. The cloaked wizard chased after the child who zig zagged and dipped behind alleyways and through areas only a child could fit through. It didn't take long however for Oras to cut him off and tagged him.
    "Four out of five."

All that was left was one more child. He had three boys and one girl which meant the last one would be a girl. Now that he only had one target he was able to focus on what she might do. He didn't bother with the rooftops now and simply dashed through the streets as he made his way to where the game had first started. When playing tag or hide and seek, there was always that one player who liked to hide or stand there the game had began. He snuck up behind her in the alleyway she was hiding in, hearing the giggling that echoed behind a collection of crates. He stood above her and reached down, touching her shoulder. She looked up and grinned.
"Guess my luck was bound to run out sometime huh?" Oras nodded.
"Five out of five." Her face turned to shock.
"You found them all already?! You sure you didn't use magic?" Oras shook his head. The game was over, and he had business to take care of. And it was noon already. He needed to get to work.
