    Personality: Ray is a generally analytical individual, with a laid-back demeanor. In most circumstances this plays to his advantage, as he generally takes a good look at anyone he considers to matter and assesses them. That said, he makes a lot of assumptions about who matters and why, sometimes he gets it wrong and assumes a person is a lot more important to his current situation than they are, sometimes he picks out and eyeballs the wrong person, and then he has to analyze someone else. He's not some kind of hyper mind either, he usually checks out who he's supposed to be getting to know long ahead of time, analyzing them for hours if he can.

    Of course, in those circumstances he can't do that, because he did do it to the incorrect person and was in too deep to start now, he tries to play a lot of it by ear. Where many people who he intentionally meets would tell you he's a suave and interesting guy, who can talk the dress of a lady he's just met, most of the people who he doesn't have time to observe will give you  wholly different opinion. He's socially awkward, as though he hasn't mastered the art of small talk, and though he seemed to be trying, he pretty much faltered altogether on the front of making an impression that lasted. He's the kind of guy who stares at the menu on a date for way too long, then orders perfectly, unless his date happened to order within 5 minutes, and then he's left stammering on the weird foreign sounding options.

    That said to a friend, he's a reliable guy who has their back. He'll defend a pal to the death if he has to, usually preferring the rescue and withdraw option. Once he has a feel for someone, be it because of hours of observation or because of hours of chatting and hanging out with them, he's quite pleasant, seeming to understand things like their sense of humor, things they like and want to do, and of course, how they'll act if he does a triggering action. He's not manipulative in the slightest unless he outright needs to be, but he's not afraid to be manipulative either.

    When someone threatens him, his guild, his friends, or his client, he tends to get pretty upset. When he gets upset, he's pretty quick to jump to the violent solution. Ray is the kind of guy to use all the knowledge he has in a fight. He assesses his opponents while he fights them, figuring out attack patterns, habits, weaknesses as he goes. In terms of an actual fight one may notice that he's a very reserved combatant: This is because he's trying to avoid having the same thing done to him. By fighting conservatively, he prevents people from determining how he really fights until he has the upper hand. Of course that's only when he's taking a fight seriously. In a standard-issue bar fight, he still doesn't fight how he normally fights, having an all-in brawling method that attacks just as much as his conservative method defends. This is because part of a bar fight is getting knocked around, and it's all in good sport: It's fun.

    Once he's got a read on his opponent's weaknesses, he'll go at them with ruthless efficiency, targeting injuries, joints, nerve clusters, ribs, anything he can strike in order to win. He's also very reliant on his magic as a means to counter his opponents' own magics. He's not nice when someone tries to start a serious fight, his allies will tell you, "He'll rip you apart unless you're just better than him. Even if you win, you're probably not coming out without a scratch."

    In times when orders are doled out and people need to follow him, he's pretty reliable on every front of the experience. When he's put in charge of others he can use his analytical skills to assess and determine the best moves, create team strategies that could feasibly best foes multiple ranks better than what he's working with. His tactical expertise, paired with his sharp insight make him a nasty foe to make, and an excellent leader. Similarly, his laid-back attitude makes him good as a subordinate, being pretty much fine with whatever task he's given by a designated leader. He's not very prone to misinterpreting orders for his own benefit, he's usually just really efficient with the orders he's given, carrying out tasks.

    Ray isn't a soldier though, he could never be in any military organization. Things like indiscriminate killing, questionable orders, suicide missions he doesn't think he has a shot at: He doesn't follow these kinds of orders. If he's in a situation where he's got to deal with those kinds of things, he'll generally back out, and if that's not possible, he'll find a way to back out anyways. Preferably in the way where he can get the rest of his squad out as well, but if it comes down to it, he'll only sacrifice himself if the squad was composed of people who were actually his close personal friends.
    Likes:

    • Books: Ray is an avid bibliophile, and reads books any time he can. This is sometimes to a fault, though only ever comedically so.
    • Archeology: He's a sucker for ancient ruins and lost civilizations, and would probably go out of his way to explore such things if they were presented.
    • Lizards: He enjoys the company of lizards of any sort, from geckos and snakes, to komodo dragons and lizardmen. Often times he's a little hesitant to fight creatures of lizard-like status or origin.

    • Guns: They are distasteful means of sport and magic, designed to remove any semblance of fairness from war and battles. They are the fantasy of a madman come to fruition, a device to take lives with the slightest of gestures. Thankfully, magic has adapted so that guns are far less efficient than their glory days.
    • Mazes/Labyrinths: Weird, winding hallways which lead to god-knows where, can result in people getting lost for days and days. His least favorite architectural edifice.
    • Cats: He doesn't hate cats, but he doesn't feel comfortable around them. It's more that they don't like him, and he's just grown to accept it as fact.

    Motivations:

    • Knowledge: The hunger for knowledge is what drove him to choose the life of a mage.
    • Friendship: It's easy to see why friendship is such a powerful motivational tool, does this really need an explanation?
    • Revenge: A dark guild took his family from him, and everything he's learned about magic was in reaction to this event. He has no mercy in his heart for mages who seek power in evil.

    Fears:

    • Big Cats: What's worse than domestic cats not liking you? Vicious giant cats like tigers and lions not liking you. He tries to avoid big cats altogether, and will usually run from, rather than fight, one.
    • Falling into Darkness: While revenge is something that drives him, he fears that it'll take him too far and he'll fall into becoming evil. His biggest fear is that he'll become a villain who believes his goals are truly righteous, which is why he strives for knowledge more fervently than he does revenge.
    • Death: It's not outright the fear of a lack of afterlife, or a fear of dying specifically. He just doesn't want to die pointlessly, having accomplished nothing. He feels that a life should have more meaning than that. If he is to die, he needs to at the very least be saving someone's life while doing so, and not just anyone, someone he cares about.

His face is home to a pair of sky blue eyes, as well as thin eyebrows, a small nose, and a somewhat large mouth with plump lips. Correcting his vision is a pair of glasses, subtly bifocal with speedreader lenses on the top half so that he can read books more quickly. His usual outfits involved button-up shirts and slacks with a brown belt. Sometimes he wears a tie as well, other times he wears a poncho over his top. As far as remaining accessories go, he wears a pair of earrings.
