Is it truly possible for this island to balance?!? (Job/Corliss)

    Post by ivyleaf33 on 15th January 2017, 8:09 am

    Job Form:
    Job Title:
    The Balance Core
    (One Time Only)

    Rank:
    B-Rank

    Player Requirements:
    B Rank(s)
    OR
    2x Or More C Ranks
    OR
    A Mix of Ranks
    Maximum 6 Players

    Job Requirements:
    12,000 words minimum
+3,000 words per player, if in a group
Kill all 4 bosses in order they're listed

    Job Location:
    Divide Island

    Job Description:
An island surrounded by mystery and rumor.
Scientists only being able to inspect certain places, but never the middle...
    Strange sounds from underwater scans...
The presence of extremely high magic power being felt...

Divide Island is the focus of this mission. A group of scientists are hiring you to go in and find the source of this magic power they're sensing, and retrieve it for them. They require than only wizards go on this task, noting that a single mediocre conjurer of cheap tricks would not suffice.

Upon arriving to the area, there is 1 single path that you can take. Upon trying to fly, you're immediately shot down to the ground regardless of how high in rank you are. Trying to tunnel through the earth, or take any other option besides this path results in failure as well. This path will take you along the outer edge of the island before coming to a point where you can go through a very narrow path, into a lush green area in the middle. The bosses can be summed at any point in the job, and do no need to be rolled. Any "Boss" roll from the dice can either summon the boss, or be converted into 2x Strong Rank, 4x Normal Rank, or 8x Weak Rank enemies.

Along this path, the mages will face several automated creations that seem to be older than magic itself, but at the same time, appears that these creations aren't that far from the golems, and magic sentries of this age. A true testament to how advanced the civilization was, or how out dated modern magic was.

    Weak: Totem Head x10
A single stone structure that appears to be a piece of a totem pole. It is able to fire unlimited shots of magic at you that is non-elemental. These deal B Rank melee damage. It can also explode if it gets close, which deals B Rank magic damage to all withing 10 meters. Luckily, they all go down in a single hit of any rank due to being so old that their power has decayed considerably.

    Normal: Mechanical Birds x30
A flurry of stone birds, perfectly detailed to look almost real. They fly stupid fast, and attack in rapid succession. It takes either 30 attacks of any rank to beat them all, or 1 B Rank or Higher AoE. The birds normally flock and attack 1 person (the highest rank) so it's not that hard to blast em.

    Strong: Tiger Automation
A 4 foot tall, 9 foot long, 2 foot wide tiger made of stone. It seems to be just as vicious as other tigers, and will require quite a bit of hassle to defeat. ((no specification on HP for it as the player will be given freedom of RP to make the fight fun.))

    Boss 1: Black Tortoise
On the North side of the island is a single Black Tortoise that seems to be unafraid of you entirely. It approaches you, asking your business, and demands you fight it before you're allowed to continue. It attacks with Earth magic that cannot be consumed by any kind of slayer. The tortoise is also able to summon earth golems to fight for it, as well as earth spikes if players get too close.

    Boss 2: White Tiger
On the west side of the island is a single 10 foot tall, 20 foot long, and 4 foot wide massive White Tiger. Much like the Tortoise, it will speak with you before having you fight it. The tiger uses Metal based attacks, and is extremely fast. It's metal magic cannot be consumed by any kind of slayer.

    Boss 3: Phoenix
On the South side is a large, 20 foot long phoenix with a 40 foot wingspan. As with all the bosses, it will speak with you before entering a battle. The bird attacks with Fire magic that can't be consumed by players, and when defeated will erupt into flames, and rise from its own ashes. Instead of making you fight it again, the bird will simply let you pass as you've been kind enough to give it a very good fight.

    Boss 4: Soul Dragon
On the east side is a large clearing with a pristine lake that stretches for an incredible distance. A large dragon rests on a small island in the middle of it and upon you noticing it, will walk through the lake and speak to you. It speaks in proverbs, giving you cryptic messages instead of straight answers. The dragon said it will provide you a single piece of somewhat powerful weaponry, in exchange for your secrecy but only if you can win a fight with him. The dragon uses soul magic, and is able to summon anything you can imagine and then some. It can also breathe fire, and attack with its claws, tail, and teeth. The fire can only be consumed by Soul Slayers, and deals melee damage.

Upon defeating the dragon, you'll be given one of the most powerful weapon in existence. As soon as you get back to the scientists who took you here, your memory of the island and all in it will be wiped by a mysterious force.

    Reward:
    Aside from Normal job XP

    1x Legendary Weapon

Science was a term that Sorano wasn’t sure she quite agreed with. It was a rather general term, one that sounded nice and fancy, but honestly wasn’t equal to its meaning. As a letter mage, she had in fact studied this word over quite a bit before discarding it, for a spell named “science” did have an interesting appeal to it, did it not? However, looking over what it really implied, and all the flaws and mistakes that had been formed with the invention of these ordered letters, the child knew that it could never be a good spell for anyone. Such a general term… And such a lie.

Science, to her, was a lie. There was no such thing in the world that could set laws for things, categories for things. There were no such things of which matched each other, nothing that had been fully discovered. If something even close to the lines that science drew existed, it would take year upon year to discover the meaning, by then when most would have given up on the topic itself besides some crazy old men determined as heck to prove everyone wrong. Yet another waster of time in the world. And here she was, going to work for these time-wasters. The letter mage had never really pegged herself as a time-waster, but who knew? This ended up happening. It was a very well-paying job she had picked up at the hall, and she was looking for some time off from work to re-organize the guild after Kanix’s disappearance. With all the jewel this one gave, it should be plenty easy for her to take a bit of a vacation.

Yet, it was pretty boring to grind her way through a job by herself, and it took both herself and Hoshi quite a bit of time when they worked by themselves, so why not grab someone from the guild? The dark eyes lifted from her paper, skimming the room. Although this was the same seat she had sat in so many times in the past, it felt oddly different, looking at all these people with what felt like the eyes of a complete stranger. It had simply been a change of title… She was the same old Sorano. She was still 5’2” (and doubted she would get taller), and wore the same clothing as always. So why did this feel so weird?

Holding her hand out at arm’s length before her eyes, she stared at the hall through open fingers. “Oh! Why not invite Corliss along?” Hoshi’s voice burst out from behind her, and the letter mage looked back to see the exceed pointing over at a woman with long, flowing white hair. “Huh, I guess, though it’s been ages since I’ve seen her.” Standing, the guild master awkwardly made her way through the crowd of tables to her teammate. “Hey, Corliss, what do you think about doing this job with us?” Palming over the job, Sorano would await her response in silence. Corliss… Probably the member of the Flame of the Phoenix she knew the least well. Gamon, the same man who had invited herself into the team had brought Corliss in as his girlfriend, and she was readily welcomed by everyone else so far. Perhaps she should make a warmer welcome too, but honestly, it felt like it would be too awkward to be doing it at this stage. After all, this was someone who had already been in the guild quite a bit!

It seemed that her life wasn’t as straightforward as she had assumed earlier then, didn’t it? Why was it getting so much harder to recollect herself?

    DON'T BE A FOOTNOTE
    in someone else's happiness

Corliss was a little taken aback. Just a little, anyway. Sorano was on her team after all; it was just that the two girls didn't see each other much, with Sorano being Fairy Tail's guild master and all. The girl was always so busy, rushing off here and there with guild business and drama alike. Maybe that's why the dark-haired mage had asked her to come along, so she had someone to make the job more fun and less stressful! Nodding to herself, Corliss made a mental vow to make this job as smooth as possible, conveniently forgetting that she wouldn't be much help to the skilled mage. If nothing else, it would make for a fun story, kicking butt, taking names, planting the Fairy Tail flag on some foreign island with the guild master during the literal darker part of the guild's history. The job itself didn't seem too hard, just defeat some robots like what Black Rose had a long time ago. Thinking back to when she joined Black Rose, Corliss never would have imagined herself ending up here; then again, the silverette rarely planned anything beyond the next meal. Thanks to Gamon, she signed on to the best team in Fairy Tail, and she had the right to say that because it included the guild master, who was still waiting on Corliss's response. Jumping to her feet a bit too eagerly and hitting her knee on the table, Corliss shouted, "I'd love to go! Uh, where do we start? I'e never been on a job that big before! Should Pyrrha come to? She's got a lot of power for her size, and she can change sizes as I'm sure Gamon has told you! " Chattering away, Corliss picked up the pygmy gryphon from it's location- napping on the bench next to Corliss's seat- to accent her question, and held the groggy fluffball close to her face pleadingly. Despite being three years older, Sorano still was in charge here, and Corliss couldn't help but act more childish in the stead of one who seemed too old for their years. This was going to be fun job, for Corliss at least.

Perhaps that the awkwardness that fizzled almost visibly between the two girls was an effect of polar opposites, not of rank. For, now that Hoshi looked at it, with a calculating eye and a tilted head, the two girls really had very little in common. With the placid and quiet Sorano compared to energetic and cheery Corliss, she wondered how they would get along. It was quite often that Sorano interacted with people different from her due to her lacking of a personality, but how would she react to someone whom was her equal, her lesser, her elder, and her opposite at the same time? It must be so terribly confusing for the both of them was what the exceed felt, drawing her tongue worriedly over a rough paw pad as she observed the going-ons. More and more, recently, she found that she was acting more like the adult than Sorano on a regular basis. Was something breaking down perhaps, in the girl who had protected her from the dangers of the world all her life? Still, she supposed she would have to do something to help out eventually…

The letter mage’s gaze swept over Corliss’ aura as she awaited an answer, as usual knowing no sense of privacy when it came to emotions. Flickers of surprise subsided into waves of excitement and happiness, emotions Sorano saw less and less often in her guildmates as they had slowly faded away over their time in exile. The white-haired girl’s reply almost soothed her a bit however, as the shout bubbled and burst free of Corliss’ lips. She was really quite similar to Hana now, wasn’t she? There was nothing to fear in such a person! Behind her, Hoshi breathed out a sigh of relief as well, always being paranoid when it came to people she didn’t know well. Though the exceed had begun to overcome many of her fears, it was still common for her to be seen chewing on the tip of her tail while worrying over this or that issue.

Then came a storm of questions, the wind that seemed to leap and soar through her teammate’s mouth crashing straight on into the two quieter females. Trying to make sense of the tangle that Corliss had just woven, Sorano slowly began, “Uh, yeah, sure. It would be nice to have Pyrrha along… Extra power and support is always nice.” She barely fit in the stumbling sentence before the rose mage ran off again, clinging tightly to the fuzzy owl that was presumed to be Pyrrha. “So, um, if you’re ready to go, then we have to head overseas. Is Pyrrha strong enough to fly the distance needed to reach Divide Island, or should we take a boat or blimp?” Hoshi sighed at this, for although she knew she now had the stamina to fly long distances such as overseas, it was still so much nicer to rest her Aera abilities. Sorano was a growing girl after all, and it would only be a bit before she outgrew the maximum weight of the poor exceed’s weightload. “We can go whenever you’re packed and ready.”

Ah, the guild was surprisingly as intact as ever. Mura had yet to fathom the wonders that this guild could take without crashing down again, given the fact that its inhabitants weren’t much calmer than cannon balls. So today, in a rather grey day, Mura wasn’t even at the guild at that point. Yes, he could clearly feel the presence of his guildmates back at the guild hall, but he was back at home, laying on his couch and reading a book that he had found back in his grandfather’s library. It was labelled:

“The Book of Five Rings: A Classic Guide to Strategy”

And it contained various thoughts and doings planned out of those thoughts by several, famous people from Midi. It contained not only combat strategies based on experiences, divided by difficulties that the author of that book took years to assemble, but also daily struggles eased out through a trick or two; heck, it even contained small pranks for youngsters who read the book. Whoever wrote it must’ve thought things through a lot; who exactly would read it, what advice would benefit the specific group of readers, how much advice was sufficient and how versatile, and so on.

Back at the kitchen, Kyuken was trying to cook things using his connection to the physical plane. What was on the menu? A fresh bowl of his favorite tatare with salt and citrus, along with white rice. As always, Zirconis was spectating the actions of the rash ghost of a rōnin, mainly just eager to try and taste the meat himself; the dragon barely thought through the possibility of ghosts being able to eat things. All in all, a rather normal day for the shaman, until the clock passed noon. When eh heard his clock tick loudly, he clapped the book in and laid it on the table, before he walked out to the kitchen. “Is the food ready..?” he worryingly asked Kyuken. Despite having lived with each other for years, his knowledge of Kyuken’s cooking attributes was faint. Luckily, as he walked in, the room smelled like spicy beef from a restaurant, and on the table was three bowls of ‘Tatare White’. “Please, help yourselves!” the samurai spoke up in pride, inviting everyone to the feast. Once the shaman had stuck the tartare into his mouth, he felt the rush of spiciness travel through his throat with a very quick speed. It caused him to grab some water and swallow the spiciness, but the meat itself was delicious. It was like sashimi, or better, and the spicy consistence didn’t stop him from eating all of it…

Over at the guild, Mura had just grabbed his sufficient equipment; his katana, Harusame, the red antiquity, his Toad Hermit Gi and the other things that he rarely mentioned. It was time to check the job board for any available issues to be solved, in which he quickly noticed his Guildmaster’s presence. She was near the job board too, so he assumed that she was going out on a mission. It suited well, so he casually appeared out of nowhere beside her, smiling. “Can I join?”

    GRACE UNDER FIRE
Sorano had waited near an hour for the mage to return, sitting there growing more and more uncertain by the minute. She was by no means an impatient person, the lack of emotions painting blank the usual canvas of anxiety and frustration that normally came with a long wait, but an hour was pushing it. From what she knew, Corliss didn’t live too far from here, and wasn’t a slow worker for jobs, either. The mage was usually fairly efficient, moving at a manageable pace in their team. What was up today? As the two sat there, wondering if they would have to go marching off by themselves, a sudden voice sounded over the letter mage’s shoulder. “Hm? Oh, hey, Mura.” The familiar face of the cheerful ace popped out of seemingly midair, asking if he could come with. The two blinked back at him, Hoshi’s amber eyes and Sorano’s darker ones, confused for a moment. Then, she would realize that with them sitting here, staring at a job sheet, it was pretty obvious what they were planning on doing.

She frowned slightly, looking in the direction Corliss had disappeared. It certainly didn’t seem like she was coming back anytime soon. Turning back to Mura, she sighed a bit, blowing out the air through her nose before nodding briefly. “Yeah, sure. Here, you can check it out on the go, since we are a bit late.” Checking the timepiece on her wrist, she sighed, they would have to take one of the magical trains to get there, which cost more. Oh well, it was for money, so it shouldn’t be that bad. “We’ll be going to Divide Island to check out some sort of magical power there. There’s apparently a research project going on there or something.” The strode out through the door, the letter mage handing the paper to Mura. “We can get there faster by train, I believe.”

Looking towards the gray sky, she checked the energy type in the clouds. It certainly didn’t seem like it would rain. She hoped it wouldn’t, since being on a mysterious island in the middle of a storm was not something she looked forward to. At least they’d get to ride over on a train if it did rain… reaching the station, she would buy tickets for Hoshi and herself, depositing the jewel in the machine with practiced ease. The next train left in five minutes.

After having patted the cute creature Hoshi, they suddenly looked at him like… that. Mura felt that he might’ve said it a little confused; asking to join the mission would’ve turned out better if he mentioned words like ‘mission’, ‘request’ or ‘paper’. Then again, it was surprising to see them confused like that, but… it also confused him a little, making the shaman scratch his hair a little. Once that Sorano looked at another direction, Mura had a feeling that she was awaiting someone else… but it was a mere assumption without further evidence, and her next words seemed to discard that theory. She suggested him checking the request now, mentioning their delay. “Late..?” he mumbled a little loud, worried for a duration as he checked the job, “…” The first part of the job paper was written in a very, very, poetic tone, and as they were heading out, a vein popped out of his forehead. He quickly laid the paper down, feeling that he read enough. Given that they were late and all, she suggested that they should take the train, in which he came with a reply followed by a small sweat trickling down: “… T-The train, eh?” Lots of flashbacks crossed his head about the last time, giving a very blunt feeling of déjà vu.

Standing at the train station, this reminded Mura of the first time that he met Sorano on a mission like this. He looked over at the benches, reminding him of how weird that he might’ve came out to be back then. It was always bound to be random when a train would show up, or so he was convinced after last time. Bravely, he pulled up the piece of paper again, quickly skimming all the poetry away until he found the actual information. “… I don’t think that I’ve been at Divide Island before,” he said, folding down the paper once he read it all, “-but it shouldn’t be that hard of a mission.” Their main objective was to retrieve intel of the magical presences that made themselves noticeable by the scientists that hired them. However, before the train would show up, he found a bench to sit on and pulled up his book from earlier, deciding to spend some time reading through it once more...

    GRACE UNDER FIRE
Waiting for the train to come in, Sorano glanced over her shoulder to see Mura standing there, fond yet anxious emotions running across his face. Ah. Right. Remembering the one “fateful” mission that had caused the two to actually make conversation with each other for the first time, Sorano realized that she couldn’t remember too clearly how they ended at all. That train ride had most definitely seemed horrendously long, and…

Oh. Yeah. That. Cringing a bit inwardly, the letter mage remembered how they’d basically acted like the angsty teenagers they were probably supposed to be, spilling out stories to one another and moping around on that train, something she could hardly imagine herself having done. That… That was a memory best forgotten. Raising her head after hearing the other make a comment, she nodded. “I haven’t either, so I’m interested in what it will be like. It’s not really that popular a tourist spot, is it?” Fiore had many popular vacation islands, but Divide Island was one she had only really heard of when in context of a mission or mage business. It could be difficult terrain, or magical forces that kept the non-mages from visiting, but she hoped it wouldn’t be too bad for them.

Just as she faded away into silence, musing over the situation, the sound of the horn blared through the area, calling attention to the train fast approaching. She handed her ticket to the conductor, and tapped the exceed who had dozed off to get on the car. “Come on, you don’t want to miss the train, Hoshi.” Waiting a bit for Mura as well, they boarded the train, finding their seats quickly. It was not a long ride to the port, especially not when travelling by a magic-powered train, and they opened their eyes to the beaming sun reflecting off the sea and sea salt in the air after only a brief nap. There was no time to waste – she could already spot the government motorboat waiting in the waters. A quick glance at her watch told her that time was almost up, and she clapped sharply to get the attention of the others. “Quick, I can see the boat already! It’s a government job, too, so we shouldn’t be late.”

Thanking the conductor for the ride, she stepped off the train, looking around for the exit.
