    "All this for a passport?"

Reyna huffed and crossed her arms, still a little frustrated that the line hadn't moved an inch in the last ten minutes. The broad shouldered man ahead of her shuffled as she peered around his shoulder, glaring daggers at the front of the massive, snaking line of bodies. People stood with their shoulders to the wall of every street corner for at least half a mile, each one hoping to get a jump on the new, incoming craze to hit the country of Fiore.

Passports were apparently all the rage, not that she cared. She only needed one to get work done, and even then, she somewhat doubted that she was going to end up using it. She'd never been an international kind of girl.

The lanterns kicked in well before she met the front of the line and about ten minutes after she'd struck up a conversation with the burly fellow ahead of her. His name, from what she'd gathered, was Rakish. Originally born in a foreign land, Rakish'd come to Fiore when he was younger and had since allowed his passport to expire. Not even of the magical sort, he was unlucky enough to be a man with family abroad.

Obviously, the passport craze hadn't taken him by surprise. That was probably a bad sign. She'd gotten stuck behind someone stupid.

"You're stupid for waiting in this line," Reyna muttered, kicking at the pavement. "I'm stupid for not coming earlier. I didn't expect this many people."

"I wouldn't call it stupid," Rakish admitted.

"Most people didn't expect a line like this. Fiore has never been a very outgoing nation, and the people in it even less so," he spoke, his voice dripping with formality. Every word carried with it a deep, rich sounding timbre that reminded Reyna of a distant land. Even if he hadn't already told her that he was a rare kind of immigrant, she probably could've guessed. "I did not expect this many people either."

"That's not really an excuse. Where would all of these people even go? I think that you're probably the only immigrant here," Reyna said. "All of these people look pretty... uh... Fiorian? Is it Fiorian? Fiorian -- they look like natural born citizens to me."

Rakish snorted and ran a hand through his wild, tawny-colored hair, his eyes stuck on the visible end of the line in front of them.

"You can't exactly judge a book by its cover like that. How can you tell what a Fiorian looks like? It's a very diverse country. You don't strike me as a natural born citizen, even after a few minutes of conversation."

Reyna quickly discovered that the line moved a lot faster when she was talking to someone. It was still a boring hell, but for some reason, suffering with a stranger eased a lot of her frustrations. It was almost like she and Rakish were bound by their mutual, if different, impatience. He showed his by mentioning dryly how slowly the line was progressing and how arduous the process ahead must be.

In stark contrast, she showed hers by butting the toes of her boots against the pavement and shooting death glares at nearby lanterns, as if she could put them out with a look alone.

"You'd think that there'd be a few more stations for this," she said, sourly, as the two approached the single booth for passport control. A velvet curtain fell down to cover what seemed to be a well-lit room in the center of the sidewalk. An official looking set of signs marked it as their target booth, and the two shuffled slowly toward it as the line once again advanced.

    "You would, yes."

A few minutes passed before a flash of light sparked out from the edges of the curtains and lit the sidewalk.

Rakish entered a good three minutes ahead of her and parted the curtain with a single brush of his dark arms. She used the moment before the curtain could fall to peer inside, but she didn't get much of a glimpse before he filled the gap with his body, leaving her alone with her impatience. She stood there in silence, utterly refusing to look behind her, for what felt like an eternity.

A flash of light liberated her from her boredom and snapped her to attention. She heard Rakish call something to someone inside and then nodded to him as he stepped out. Without a word, she let him go and advanced into the innards of the booth.

it was a little more dull than she'd been expecting. A single desk separated her from an official looking officiary. A stack of paperwork idled on the right side of the desk, and a few scant papers littered the left half.

"You're very lucky," the nerdy looking man said. "You're one of the last we'll get to today! To think, so many people are interested in tourism!"

The man snorted and handed her a pen. She filled out the paperwork in about a minute and then passed it back to him. The clerk, whose name tag read "HI I'M DINGLE," nodded before he took it into his hands and topped off the larger stack of white with her personal information.

"All we need now is a picture, and then we'll mail this baby to you in a few weeks," he said, sounding positively enthused.

    "A... a few weeks? This isn't instant?"

"You're kidding right? This is bureaucracy," he said, as if that explained everything. Then, like he was belittling her, Dingle pushed up his glasses. "You're just here to set up the process for us to print it! Not to actually get it today."

When Reyna finally took her photograph, a single vein was practically exploding out of her temple, ready to pop like a blood vessel all over Dingle's stupid face.
