    Job:

Dmitry was napping in the tavern section of the Lamia Scale guildhall, when he was woken by a member of the town guard coming through the marble doors to post a bounty type job with the guild. It didn't take long for the poster to catch his attention; he was in need of a job. It entailed the capture of one Jacob Goodnight, a local miner responsible for several brutal murders near the Hargeon docks. He was no mage, but was apparently known for having incredible strength.

Dmitry decided this was a good test of his abilities. He officially took the job and headed for the Docks.

It was in the afternoon when Dmitry got to the port district; before he could start hunting this man, he needed some clues.

'Remember what I taught you, boy.' The voice of the wolf spirit, Hati rang out in his mind.

All prey leave behind some trace of their existence. A wise hunter must not only follow the physical properties of these traces, but the psychological implications of them as well. One mustn't simply see where their prey is going, but also what they intend to do when they get there. This lets the hunter know his prey inside and out.

This is what Dmitry learned from the Great Wolf.

Naturally, the area of the city guard's sting operation was more or less untouched. It's not as if anyone would be interested in coming here.

The alleyway had blood splattered on the walls and ground, as well as a dry pool of it near one of the walls. Apparently, the guard lost one of there own and the evidence was all over the place. Dmitry deduced that blood spatter on the walls was from the initial wound and the pool was from the subsequent blood loss. Judging from the size of the pool and the height of the wall spatters, the man was hit in the neck; this guy was precise. There was also a large chunk missing out of one of the walls, confirming the meat hook Dmitry read about in the bounty poster.

He would have to be careful.

Midnight had arrived. Dmitry used what he knew to narrow down the potential location of the killer to three alleysnear the docks. At the moment, the nature spirit mage was hiding in the corner of one these alleys, shrouded in darkness, his eyes closed.

It's time, he thought to himself. Dmitry opened his eyes to reveal his pupils glowing silver, the sign that his powers were active. He raised his hand in front of him and whispered an incantation.

"I invoke the Twin Ravens: Huginn! Muninn!"

After these words were spoken, two ravens, seemingly made from smoke sprang forth from Dmitry's hand and flew off into the night sky.

As the two birds soared through the air, Dmitry focused on the psychic link between him and them, allowing him to see through their eyes. From this literal birds-eye view, he could clearly see the district and the alleys he narrowed out, despite the darkness.

Now then, where are you Jacob? Dmitry thought as he scanned the area.

As if to answer his question, he soon noticed an abnormally large man shuffling through the alley adjacent to his. The man appeared to be carrying a large chain; Dmitry had found his prey. He had Huginn and Muninn move in a bit closer while he began exiting the alley he was in.

As Dmitry left the ally, he noticed something odd: Jacob had stopped moving. He seemed to shudder a bit. Then he did something Dmitry would never have expected - he looked straight at Muninn.

Dmitry stopped dead in his tracks. "What the hell..?" He muttered without thinking. It had to be a coincidence. Nobody should be able to notice Huginn and Muninn like that. And yet, Jacob Goodnight turned around and stared directly at the ravens, terror on his face. He broke out into a run and went into a nearby back ally. Dmitry ran in after him, confusion gripping him. This shouldn't be possible. Unless...

    "He's a medium?"

Jacob ran into a dead-end in the alley. He turned around, his back now against the wall, just as Dmitry turned the corner. Huginn and Muninn circled overhead.

"You...they follow you!" Jacob stuttered. "How do you know that?" Dmitry asked, not really expecting much of an answer. "I...feel them...I feel them...circling above." Jacob answered.

So...he really is a medium, Dmitry thought. Was this what drove him to madness? Still...

Huginn and Muninn dove down towards Dmitry before changing shape and becoming knives in his hands. He flipped the nine inch blades into a reverse grip and brought up his guard, as he shifted his feet into position.

     "That doesn't matter now!"

"Doesn't...matter...?" Jacob mumbled, clearly upset. "DOESN'T MATTER?!"

He took a step forward and slung the meat hook at the end of the chain straight at Dmitry. Dmitry sidestepped it and brought his knives across it in a scissor-like motion, cutting the chain in two. He then began running toward Jacob, knives raised while Jacob pulled a meat cleaver from his belt and threw at Dmitry's neck with deadly accuracy. However, the enhanced sight given to him by Huginn and Muninn's knife forms allowed Dmitry to react in time to duck under the cleaver as it flew by, only slightly delaying his charge.

As Dmitry drew near, Jacob drew a carving knife and thrust it straight at Dmitry's chest. Dmitry parried the blade with his left knife and punched Jacob in the face with his right fist, knocking his head into the behind him. As Jacob began to fall forward, Dmitry leaped backwards out of the way, allowing the lumbering man to fall flat on his face.

As Jacob fell unconscious, Dmitry allowed the spirit blades to disperse before he kneeling down to grab the carving knife on the ground. He then held it up to Jacob's neck as he made sure the man was truly out cold. Having confirmed that he wouldn't be waking up any time soon, Dmitry began tying Jacob's hands and feet with the rope he brought along.

The Hunt For Jacob Goodnight Empty Re: The Hunt For Jacob Goodnight

Post by Benjamin 30th April 2015, 2:51 am

Dmitry stared down at Jacob, a melancholy expression on his face. This man had become this deranged because he could sense the spiritual plane, but didn't know what it was he was sensing. With no knowledge of this perception, he would likely feel confused and persecuted.

    This...could have been me...

'Isn't that why you joined a guild?' He heard his surrogate father say.

That's right...to find...a reason to keep my humanity... Dmitry hoped he would find that reason soon.

"I invoke the lunar horse: Alsvinder!" The spirit horse flowed forth from nothing, glowing like the moon. "Sorry about this pal, but I'm gonna need your help with this." Dmitry said as he hoisted Jacob's limp body on to the glowing steed. As they walked towards the jail, Dmitry thought about what would become of his captive. He wasn't a very sympathetic person, but he decided it would be best to try explaining the circumstances to the guard. Still, with all that's happened, Jacob would most likely receive the death penalty.

"So be it. It's their law, not mine." Dmitry said as he walked on into the night.
