Monster Challenge part 1 Empty Monster Challenge part 1

Post by Veil Yami 25th October 2018, 6:33 am

Veil looked around the creepy lands he had arrived in by flight. A week ago he had received a letter from a mysterious mage with a challenge. The challenge had seemed intriguing so the young mage had decided that he would take it up and see where he got. The monster on the back was a large gargoyle that looked strong. So, once on getting the challenge he had told the desk he was taking a personal job, grabbed his briefcase and cane and headed out. Now, Veil stood on a open grassland, a large ruin structure stood only yards away. His researcher mind was clashing with his battle side as he fought the urge to not rush ahead and see every inch of these beautiful ruins.

The young mage was wearing a black suit with a dark green tie, black dress pants and thick leather combat boots that still managed to look stylish. This time due to the cold weather, Veil had added a ankle length black duster, the collar pushed up to protect his neck from the cold. As usual he carried a black cane with a silver wolf head in his right hand and a briefcase made of leather with a strange magic symbol on the body in his left. His eyes looked out from behind a pair of half moon spectacles on his nose. His shaggy red hair fell to his shoulders and was capped with a black top hat. Heavy boots pushed on the half frozen grass making a cracking sound with each step.

    1,733 words.

The ruins came closer and closer, only visible by the occasional moon lit cracks from the darkened cloud filled sky. The young mage looked at the stone with dark green eyes full of curiosity. He bent down next to a broken wall, placing his hand against the stone he closed his eyes and felt the history under the stone. His instincts kicked in and he leaped back as a sudden deep furrow of three gouges appeared in the stone. Veil slid back, his cane placed across his body in a defensive position. His gaze shifted around, looking for the source of the attack. Whatever had done it was fast and lethal.

Veil looked around in the sky, he knew what had done it now that he thought of it. He had been foolish to come so close to these ruins without first doing a search of the area. He had woken the guardian of the area, the same monster he had come to hunt now hunted him. His gaze shifted quickly one way than the other, he could hear the sound of leathery wings flapping quickly. The beast seemed to flap once, soar for ten seconds than flap again. The beast was heavy but quick, a deadly combination. Veil set down his briefcase and left it there, no point in carrying a cumbersome object into battle. It had other functions that would be useless in this situation but could be vital later.

The beast finally made a appearance, coming from the sky in a whooshing wind now that Veil was listening for it. The beast could really move, closing in quickly. His legs bent, Veil dived to the side and rolled. He prepared a spell but the gargoyle was already gone to the sky once more. Veil cursed and considered what to do. His magic took a little time to cast due to the hand movement requirements. While his master could do the same magic with a flick of his wrist, Veil wasn't there yet. Deciding he needed to take this to a different playing field he instead focused on the wind around him.

He could feel it's power coursing through his blood, something ancient and strong coursed through his being. He could feel the wind under his feet getting stronger, the power wrapping him like a invisible cloak. With a slight jump he took off into the sky, spinning in the air as he opened his arms. Flight was the one gift he wanted to truly know about from some ancestor. His master had told him it was in his blood, that the wind was his friend. Now here, he would do something he had never done before. A aerial battle against a flying opponent. Now they were in the air he could better see the gargoyle and he felt his blood run cold. The creature was at least six feet tall and had dark grey skin, black hair went from his scalp down to his shoulders, he had four digits, each one ending in a sharp point.

His wings were large and leathery though they seemed to have no spikes or nail, it had two legs also ending in four digit feet that tapered to a point. A two foot long whip like tail hung behind him. The creature roared to show a mouth of teeth with the canines having grown longer than the others. It's body was well built corded muscle, if Veil had not been ordered to kill it he would have done his upmost to tame this beast. Such power and strength emitted from him that Veil wondered if this beast could be killed. It floated in place and Veil noticed a key component. It had to take breaks between flight, that was the ten second window. It's body was heavy so after each attack it needed to recuparate. Of course the power of flight gave it an advantage in normal situations.

Now the beast look agitated that it was facing a fellow flyer. Without a second thought to the enemy, Veil flung his hands out and formed symbols. "Amatersu Formula six, Holy Swords!" The air around the gargoyle was suddenly filled with four yellow glowing magic symbols. One in front, one behind, and two at an angle forming an X at each shoulder. The gargoyle looked at each one and swiped at the symbols, it's arm going straight through it. A flash of yellow light and the beast roared from the blinding brightness of light magic. The symbols fired off three, four foot long light swords from each circle. The beast didn't even have time to twitch before the swords impaled him from the front, back, and shoulders.

Mp Cost 20, MP remaining 180. Effect: Causes internal bleeding but leaves no outer damage. Damage: 30 HP, Monster HP left 170

As the gargoyle fell to earth Veil gave chase, using the wind around him to push his speed. As he got closer he formed another hand symbol but the Gargoyle flicked around and lashed out with his tail. Veil managed to keep his head from being smashed open like a pumpkin but the Tail struck his side and sent him spiraling away.

Glancing blow damage 10 HP, HP remaining 190

Veil fought to regain his balance, ducking back just as a claw slashed where his chest had been a moment before. Those claws were designed to sink into stone, what they would do to a human body made Veil shiver. His hands quickly moved as he flew back, the Gargoyle on the chase. While the beast was bigger and physically stronger, Veil was smaller and more agile. He moved through the air like a fish through water. Cutting corners, shifting in midair, spinning around the whipping tail and deadly slashes. After a full minute of chasing the Gargoyle floated in the air, panting for air. The spell finished, Veil threw his arms out. A magic circle fifteen meters wide appeared above the gargoyle.

The magic circle glowed black in the middle but the outer rim glowed bright yellow. The two seemed to spark off each other then gather into a single color. A 15 meter wide beam of dark and light magic fused together fired down from the sky. The gargoyle could only stare, too winded to move. The beam struck the beast and sent him straight to the ground, the beam on top of him. Upon collision with the earth the beam exploded. Creating a small dome of destruction magic. The ground around the impact was burned to ash, leaving a large crater with the gargoyle laying in the center.

Mp Cost: 20 Mp left 160. Damage cost: 40 HP, HP left 130.

Veil floated above the gargoyle who lay stunned in the ground. Veil raised his hands forming another magic circle, his hands were a blur as he went through the complicated patterns. After a full three seconds he stopped. The sky above was suddenly cast in a twenty two and a half meter wide magic circle of dark purple, the ground as well was also cast in the same radius and color magic circle. As the circle glowed the Gargoyle pulled itself from the crater. The first beam slammed on top of the Gargoyle sending him back into the crater. A rain of beams began firing from the magic circle in random patterns. Getting quicker and quicker as the spell carried on.

The gargoyle stood up, it's body turning grey as it covered itself in stone. Veil could see a slight glow coming from the rock showing the beast was healing. Unfortunally it had chosen to do so inside the magic circle field. The stone was smashed over and over from above and below, the stone shattering and the beast finally falling after the sixth beam struck it. The beast slayed, Veil swiped his arm through the air and the magic circles vanished. Veil floated down and looked at the monster. He sighed at the waste of such a powerful creature but it had done very well. He snipped off several hairs and placed them in the enevelope to be sent to the mysterious mage.

MP cost 22 MP Left 138. Damage Dealth 60 HP per blast. Six blasts totals 360 damage. HP Left 0.

Veil walked over to his briefcase and pulled out a shovel from the strangely deep item. Walking back, he began burying the dirt over the body of the Gargoyle. Twenty minutes later he looked at the filled in hole and nodded. Bowing his head he gave a salute over his heart in respect to a great warrior. Turning away, he placed the shovel back in the briefcase, closed it and walked to the ruins. Sitting down, he examined the ruins closely. He would do so for two days before leaving.
