An enormous yawn threatened to erupt from inside her throat as Leah scanned the room impatiently. Despite the fact that the doors were supposed to have closed promptly at 10:00 pm on the dot, it was now 10:06, and there was absolutely zero sign that the benefactors of this little mystery game were preparing to lock up the house. Much to the redhead's added annoyance, there seemed to be a large gathering for this overnight sleep over for wealthy adults, which would make her job that much harder. Having been hired as a guard for the entire group of guests to prevent them from engaging in any overly stupid activities that might cause bodily harm, Leah felt responsible for every individual person who had entered the home. Of course, they hardly felt the same way about a kid who seemed to be half of their ages, for the majority of the guests at least.

In fact, most of the crowd seemed to be highly disdainful of the redhead.  This didn't exactly suit her plans of being able to control them in the future (by telling any person to stop being rambunctious, troublesome, etc.) but she supposed things could work out.  After all, the "innocence" of a kid might be able to notice things that adults wouldn't.  Leah sat in a corner of the room, keeping as watchful of an eye out as she thought was possible.  It seemed that everything was going fine... well, if one could say people tripping into the extravagant fondue fountains and spiking the punch was fine.  Those things were normal enough in her opinion, if unwanted.  Just then, a young woman with spiky golden hair and sterling grey eyes strode confidently into the room and shouted for everyone's attention.

"Alright, listen up all you idiots who just want the prize money and don't care that this is a charity event!  Oak Inn has all of your waivers signed, so be careful because we're not paying for any of your stupidity.  It's 10:29, and in less than a minute all the doors will be locked.  Nobody gets in or out until tomorrow night at the same time, so try to get along with each other.  Remember it's all a friendly game; try not to squabble too much, and have fun."  With that, the woman nodded sharply to what seemed to be the whole crowd as her eyes met with Leah's.  Keep them safe and do your job right, they seemed to say.

Once the woman left the enormous room, others began to follow her. They wouldn't be permitted to leave the building for anything, what with it being so close to the time of the beginning of the game, but it was okay to disperse around the establishment now. Each guest had been given a room in the inn on the second floor, and Leah's was in the middle of hallway. The hope had been that in this way, she would be able to hear if people were creeping around and disturbing the game or other players. Since the redhead had already checked her room and memorized the layouts of the other rooms as well as what guests were staying in them (it really was her job to do so) she decided to simply wander around the place for a bit. Maybe she would end up being involved as a witness to one of the 'murders' or something. It'd surely make this mission a lot more interesting.

Just then, the dong of a great bell resounded through the entire building. Wincing at the harsh ringing sound of what she assumed to be a large brass instrument, Leah started back to the main room. Part of the rules were that whenever a notification was sent out (which she assumed was meant to be in the form of the eardrum breaking bell) all participants were to immediately gather in the starting hall. Perhaps someone had fallen victim to the 'murderer' and they were all to convene to discuss evidence, suspects, alibis... etc.

The redhead made it back safely (as if she were in any danger at all?) and realized that indeed, someone had been murdered. Only, the corpse was still moving. It was one of the guests who had fallen into the fondue fountain, and his eyes were twitching slightly. Although it was obvious just how fake this 'murder' had been, another young man quickly spoke up. He asked if anyone had seen the murder, and everyone murmured that they had been in various places around the room. The man frowned before leaning down closely to inspect the 'dead body.' After examining it for just a few moments, he pronounced that the murder weapon had been poison and asked what the man had eaten last.

"Cupcakes!" claimed an elderly spinster of a woman, with gnarled fingers and a disgusted look on his face.  "He was eating those darned cupcakes, and serves him right for dying.  Who else would eat toffee cupcakes?  I daresay he had it coming right to him!"  Resisting the immense need to raise an eyebrow aggressively at the woman, Leah exhaled slowly.  Hopefully, her annoyance would all be gone by the time she finishe-

No.  It was still there, and strong as ever.  'Who else would eat toffee cupcakes?'  Why, she would, of course!  Had the cupcakes not been rigged to be 'poisoned' specifically for that man, the emerald eyed mage would probably have been lying on the floor right now.  That old woman didn't know what the heck she was talking about, and it irritated Leah to no degree.  Fortunately, the young man simply nodded rather than encouraging the elderly person's bias and moved on to asking if anyone had seen another person near this room or the entrance to it during the free time earlier.

Just then, a wild eyed girl just a few years younger than the redhead herself burst into the room, her hair in disarray.  "I done seen it!  Some un's done gone an' killed a man!  O'er in Room 114, e's dead.  There's blood stains in the rug, on the- the bed.  It ain't a joke or game, I'm tellin' ye, some un's done gone an' killed em fer real!"

Immediately, Leah rose to her feet with narrowed eyes.  Having been leaning against the wall in the same corner as earlier, the redhead made her way closer to the doorway, where the maid stood panting and gesticulating wildly.  She slipped outside, grabbing the other girl around the shoulder and also guiding her out.  Then, the redhead closed the door as gently as she could and made sure that it was locked.

"Listen to me ye goober, a man got killed in Room 114?" she spoke in low, urgent tones, and called the girl by a name to get her attention, even if it was indignant.

"A' course I knows what I saw!" it worked, as she was less panicked and more annoyed now.  "Twas a man, all cut up an' he's got a smile in 'is chest wi' a whole bunch a blood!  Bleedin' all over the bed, an' is gonna be a right mess t' clean up fo sho, if ye know what I mean."  The girl paused to scrutinize her curiously.  "Ye don' look like an or'nary gues', if I be sayin' so meself, Missus," she muttered.

"I ain't, so show me to the room already," Leah said as she flashed a sharp look at the hotel employee.

The girl glanced away with a dark look on her face but started down the hall at a quick pace with long, loping steps and a confident aura that showed she knew her way around the place.

Breathing in a deep breath, the girl unlocked the door and slid inside with a serious expression.  Right as she got inside, she met face to face with the angry and grave expressions of the rest of the guests.

    "There she is!"
    "Get her!"
"Quick, before she kills anyone else!"

All of a sudden there were people crowding towards her, their hands reaching out and pushing her flat against the door.  When she was held in place by a stocky middle-aged man in a white dress shirt and slacks, sweat pouring down his forehead as he stared at her nervously, another person chimed in.  "But what if she has a weapon and kills us all?!?"  Immediately, that person's fear were crowded out as several more people pointed out, none of them very politely or gently, that she couldn't really do anything in front of all these people since she wouldn't kill them all.

I could kill you all, so ye're wrong there, but I wouldn't, not in plain sight like this, she scoffed and then acknowledged, amending her statement.

All she said, scanning the room and trying to meet eyes with every occupant, was, "I was with you all when the murder occurred.  I didn't go to my room or be alone at any point... only ask someone, and they will confirm my alibi."  She could talk like a upcity dweller when she wanted to, and this situation seemed to call for it.  Reluctantly, or at least it seemed to be that way, several people said that they had seen her the entire time.  It was just as Leah had expected and hoped for; after all, she had stayed with the same small group for the entire duration of free time.

"So it's not her," said the jacketless man as he backed away from where he had pinned her against the heavy door.  With a slightly offended expression, the girl stood back up straight and began to walk over to her familiar corner as he continued speaking.  "Who else was suspicious or did anything odd?  Do you think maybe the maid-"

"IT WAS HER!"  A booming voice shouted from across the room, and the crowd of people parted for a huge man dressed in an odd chief costume, very out of place compared to the rest of the guests, who were in the normally accepted formal wear of an evening party.  "I KNOW IT WAS HER!"  Then without further ado, he yanked a cleaver out of his belt and chucked the blade at her with whirling speed.

Exasperated, the girl briefly requipped an Imperial Dagger-- one blade, and deflected the flying cleaver. Striking quickly before he went to grab another, she dashed forward and clunked him on the head with the pommel of her weapon's handle. Without allowing her face to break in expression from the placid, slightly relieved countenance it had assumed earlier, Leah exquipped the knife. Whispers echoed from around the room, and she caught the words weapon, dangerous, killer, before two middle aged businessmen approached her. Although their words were polite, they were guarded, and the mage could see that behind them, people were whispering frantically about her and more than ready to back up the men. The one on the left began to ask if she had had a knife, since there was no weapon now visible on her person, when a scream came from outside the room. Resisting the urge to swear at how distracted she had become by all of this fuss the guests were making, the girl scrambled to get out of the room; she bolted the door carefully on her way back and slid the normal key into her pocket. She had heard the cry come from... there! Leah set off at a full sprint in that direction. Please let her not be late.

"J-John?  What are ye doin'?  S-Stay away from me!"

Leah arrived at the scene, which happened to be the front reception area of the inn, where a young man dressed in a bellhop uniform was slowly approaching the huddled form of maid (not the one from earlier), a large butcher knife tightly grasped in his right hand.  She couldn't make out the exact words from here, but his mouth seemed to be moving at least slightly; judging by the mocking expression on his face, there would be no mercy involving this man.  Well, that was how she liked it.

Rushing forward to slam him against a wall, the redhead requipped a knife and slid it gentle-like against his wrist, the one of the hand which held the knife.  "Follow me and we'll talk all nice-like outside, or else you'll lose your hand and then your life," she muttered in his ear.  Stiffening, the male nodded almost imperceptibly, but his eyes showed fury and confusion.  Why was she bringing him outside?  Well, he would find out soon.

The girl towed the man out the back door into the alley, where she immediately let him free and slammed the door behind her.  "Alright, let me tell ye how this is gonna go down.  Ye try an' run, an' I'm gonna kill ye faster than ye can blink.  Yer gonna cut me up a li'l bit, an' then yer gonna get two extra seconds to run.  Better start fightin'," she said with a smirk.  His eyes were clouded with misunderstanding for a moment before he charged at her, swinging the knife wildly.  Instead of sidestepping the attack completely, Leah moved only enough that it sliced across her arm, not very deep but still enough to draw blood.  "Is that all ye can do, ye li'l coward?"  Something in her voice seemed to tell him that this situation was wrong, however, because he bolted for the exit of the back alley.

Unfortunately, Leah's patience was not to be tested, and a knife flew at him, sticking solidly into the back of his neck.  The gory details can be spared, but he died a fairly clean death anyways.  Then, the door of the alley way flew open and a crowd of people escaped, some of them from the original main hall (which must have been unlocked by a member of the hotel staff or such).  They crowded around the body and tried to surround her, but she managed to slip back inside the inn and to her room, where she stayed for the remainder of the night.  The next morning, the woman with steel grey eyes came and simply nodded to her once.  Without receiving a word of thanks, expecting one, or requesting one, Leah took the envelope that was handed to her and stalked out the door.  She was leaving this inn and never planned to return.
